Asked what areas the Tar Heels have pinpointed to increase revenue generation, Cunningham believes there are two main avenues, including stadium naming. “What we've done historically is gifts as opposed to naming rights for facilities that have a term limit to it. Courts, court signage and jersey patches. Those are probably the two biggest ones. Jersey obviously hasn't passed yet from an NCAA standpoint. But those are probably the biggest ticket items that probably have the quickest impact but also the longest sales cycle." As it relates to campus support and the future of college athletics, Cunningham observes: “I think the financial model is changing. I think what we have done historically is taken all the revenue from football and basketball and subsidized everybody else. I think what you're starting to see is football and basketball have enough revenue to sustain themselves. But if we're going to maintain 28 teams, there needs to be additional support of those teams. So that's what you're seeing. Some of that was the women's basketball practice gym, some of it was additional support. And just how are we going to make sure that we provide these opportunities? Illinois AD Josh Whitman joins the Illinois LawCast and remarks that “the athletics program was not in a great place” when he arrived, and “we’ve just gradually and steadily over the last 10 years tried to take on individual steps towards a better future. And now we’re enjoying that better future. … Now for us it’s making sure that we stay hungry, that we don’t allow an ounce of complacency to enter our bodies and that we continue to look and strive for what’s next and looking for ways to raise the bar and continue to elevate the program. … The great thing about sports is there’s a scoreboard, and unless you’re winning the last event in every sport every year, there’s always more to do. And so we’re continually looking for places to provide additional support to our student-athletes, to help our coaches and our support staff take another step forward. … And if you are an inherent competitor as I am, you don’t need somebody to prescribe what the next steps are – you’re constantly looking at your program, trying to figure out where we can be better.” More from Whitman. Rutgers AD Keli Zinn participated in a fireside chat at the New Jersey Women Business Leaders Forum and noted of the growth of women’s sports: “The biggest way that people can move the needle on that is through the direct consumption of sports, right? At the end of the day, when you look at TV viewership, revenue and all the things that's driving the almighty dollar of sports, it's really based upon consumption. And so those numbers are not going to change until people do take notice and genuinely support and get behind women's programs.” Zinn also points out that “we consistently drew 12,000 every night for a gymnastics meet [at LSU]. I'm not going to talk about our attendance here at Rutgers because it's my job now to move that in a better direction, but you take something like that and the comparable, it's as simple as people getting behind something that they're passionate about and starting there to be able to move the needle on that sport. Same thing for women's basketball and a number of them. I mean, they were genuinely showing in data and metrics that equate to financial gain and revenue that they were moving the needle at LSU. And so I'm going to do my part to – at minimum – bring exposure to that here so people can see it is a possibility that can be attained.” More. (link)

Buffalo AD Mark Alnutt and Kent State Vice AD Randale Richmond sit down with Norfolk State Director of Corporate Sponsorships and Marketing Jazmin Elliott to reflect on how they align their foundational values and how they use their values to connect with today’s student-athletes despite a changing value proposition for athletics. Alnutt ties adaptation to bedrock values – family and faith – plus hard work and being a great teammate, and stresses the importance of embracing change and being proactive. His operational non-negotiable is to “communicate, communicate, communicate” across all constituencies. He adds: “You cannot do it by yourself. Build your network – build a network of people that you might want to refer to as your personal board of directors that’s going to help guide you through this journey in life. … You’re going to run into [hard times]. How do you respond—with your attitude, with your passion, being overly prepared. … You persevere, you’re going to have success.” Richmond adds: “Throughout this time period of change, that’s when your values are the most important because things that you are familiar with or things that you're used to, they're all being upended. So where do you go to focus on what your sole purpose is? And in this industry, our sole purpose are the student athletes. Arkansas has parted ways with Football HC Sam Pittman, who is due a $9.3M buyout, and CBS’ Will Backus explains: “Pittman signed a new contract with Arkansas in June 2022. … The deal extended Pittman through the 2026 season automatically and added another year to 2027 when he won seven games in 2022. It also increased Pittman's annual salary to $5M and adjusted his buyout structure. Since Arkansas made the decision to fire Pittman while he had a record above .500 since the 2021 season, it will owe him approximately $9.3M in buyout money. If the Razorbacks waited for that record since 2021 to drop below .500, the figure would have been closer to $5.7M. Since 2021, the Razorbacks are now 29-27. USC women’s basketball standout JuJu Watkins will not compete this season to focus on recovering from the season-ending injury she suffered during the NCAA Tournament. Trojans HC Lindsay Gottlieb: "JuJu's health and well-being are our top priority, and we fully support her decision to focus on recovery this season. While we will certainly miss her impact on the court, she continues to play a vital role in our program as a leader and teammate. The strength and maturity she has shown through this process is a reflection of who she is, and we know the Trojan Family will continue to rally behind her. Rong Niu – better known as the unicycle performer Red Panda – plans to return to courts throughout college basketball and the NBA this season. Niu sustained a serious wrist injury during a WNBA game in July, and her agent, Pat Figley, says in a memo: "We are sending out this note to thank everyone for their heartfelt wishes to Red Panda for a speedy recovery from her fall. It was a very serious injury and she did require surgery. She appreciated all the sincere follow-up. It was amazing and very touching. She really appreciates all of the support. She is recovering well and is practicing. She is looking forward to performing this season." (link)

Louisiana Tech Senior Assoc. AD for Championship Resources/CRO Wally Crittenden and former NAADD President/former CEO of the VMI Foundation Brian Crockett visited with College.town’s Kristen Eargle to discuss all things development from past to present. On what young professionals should focus on, Crockett remarks: “Having a plan. I talk to so many young people, and it’s an easy conversation that a plan really has to have a start date and an end date. That’s all it has to have, and it can evolve over a period of time. Then, you have to show flexibility.” Crittenden adds: “You’ve got to be a good teammate. You’ve got to show up every day willing to compete and do the best that you can to make the team better and understand it’s bigger than you. The other thing I would say is to try to understand and appreciate how important the job they’re doing is. They are the source of continuity for storytelling across sports and departments. Coaches come and go, athletes come and go. Many of our senior administrators are, to put it even better perhaps, the caretaker of continuity on a campus and it’s important that you understand that’s a role that you have. I think sometimes that gets lost as we try to figure out how we’re going to get through day-to-day but understanding the role that you play in the continuity of the program is important.” More from Crittenden and Crockett. U.S. District Court Judge Tiffany R. Johnson on Thursday dismissed all but one type of claim brought by former Kentucky swimmer Riley Gaines and more than a dozen other female athletes against the NCAA, Georgia and other defendants over the eligibility of transgender student-athletes. Sportico’s Michael McCann and Daniel Libit explain that Johnson “identified a number of problems in Gaines’ legal theories. One flaw is a law called the Riley Gaines Act. For starters, Johnson found Gaines’ demands for Georgia, the Georgia Tech Athletic Association and assorted other defendants associated with the state to be moot. The Riley Gaines Act, which Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed into law in April, prohibits Georgia universities from, as Johnson summarized, ‘hosting or participating in competitions where biologically male athletes are permitted to either compete against biologically female athletes or use female-designated restrooms and other facilities.’ The judge noted this law prohibits ‘exactly the conduct’ Gaines targets in the complaint. The remedy sought by Gaines is therefore already in place, meaning her claim is no longer needed.” Johnson also dismissed Gaines’ constitutional claims against the NCAA, citing a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in NCAA v. Tarkanian (1988) that the NCAA is not a state actor. Although many NCAA members are public universities, which are state actors, the NCAA is itself a nonprofit organization. More. (link)

I think it may have been something that would have been a shock to the system 20 years ago, but I think everybody has seen the evolution of sports, and collegiate athletics is clearly not on the leading edge of doing that. If you look at professional sports, they've been much more aggressive in integrating brands and properties. So, I think it's just a natural evolution, and I think if we do it in the right way and integrate partners that are authentic to who we are, I think that will work with how we operate.” That’s North Carolina Executive Assoc. You've got Augusta, you've got Wimbledon. I think there's places that have completely integrated sponsors in a much different way. And I think that's really what we would attempt to do. Disney had a wedding chapel and it was sponsored by Waterford. They had their baseball stadium by Toro. If you put Modelo on the (football coaches') headsets, probably not a good idea. Modelo sponsoring a beer garden makes sense. So, it just becomes part and parcel to what you're doing. I think that's where the sponsorship experience that he (Newmark) brings to us is going to be really valuable to Carolina. Let's make sure that it fits with what we're doing and what we're saying as an institution culturally. What's the right fit for us?” (link)

In reflecting on her career path, Ackerman remarked: “I could never have charted my career path. And so any of you who think this is where you’ll be in a year or two or five, good luck with that because I’m just saying that’s not really how life works. And I think what you do is you get yourself in a good position so that when certain types of opportunities come along that you think sound pretty good, like me in the Big East, for example, you’re in a position to be tapped. And so, my advice to young women, especially, is embrace that journey and do a good job wherever you are along the way because your reputation will precede you.” On hosting the Men’s and Women’s Final Four in the same city: “Same weekend, same city. On the latest episode of “The Career Hustle,’ UCF Senior Executive Assoc. AD for Capital Projects, Events & Operations Marcus Attles visits with College.town’s Kristen Eargle, remarking on how he knew he was ready for more in his career and how he identifies that in others: “The first thing I always say is you have to be great at whatever is being assigned to you. I wanted to be the best at whatever it was that was given to me. If it was credentials, then I was going to be the best credential maker. It didn't matter what it was, no task was too big or small. It was really about showing that value, but then also communicating what my aspirations were. … I got excited about people looking out for me and providing me with opportunities that I didn't even see for myself. For so long in my career and my journey, I was more internal focused. It took other people. It took the Travis Goffs of the world at Northwestern. … to reach out and say ‘Hey, there's more to this. There's a revenue generator. Come along and give a tour and interact with some of our key stakeholders.’ That, for me, was just another way to build relationships, and it was just a great experience. For me, it helped carry me and propel me to where I am now. I look back on that time and try to do the same thing for my staff and put them in places where I know that they're going to have some success. We can really build on the things that they do well and then push them on some of the things that they need to continue to grow in, knowing that I’m there to support them along the way." (link)

Arizona State Football HC Kenny Dillingham’s contract is a “bargain,” writes the San Jose Mercury News’ Jon Wilner, who adds that ASU AD Graham Rossini and President Michael Crow “found a way to extend Dillingham’s contract beyond the five-year limit (for state university employees) imposed by the Arizona Board of Regents” with a new deal, finalized last winter and spanning five years, that features a rollover clause adding an extra year to Dillingham’s contract for every season the Sun Devils win at least six games. Rossini: “I asked President Crow if there was a way for performance to unlock years. Could we include trigger components? We were realistic about what we could do and designed it around the thing that mattered most to Kenny. He valued longevity, so it’s a competitive base with performance upside. Our approach with him was that not one size (i.e., maximum dollars) fits all.” Wilner continues: “The performance triggers allow the contract to remain in place for 10 years — meaning Dillingham would be the longest-tenured coach in ASU history not named Frank Kush when it expires after the 2034 season.” With Dillingham expected to earn $5.8M this year, Wilner notes “it’s a hefty sum compared to the $3.9M Dillingham collected when he took over the depleted program in the winter of 2023. But given the return on ASU’s investment, we’d argue that Dillingham is underpaid in the same fashion any transformative head coach in major college football is underpaid. Dillingham’s compensation doesn’t begin to match the benefits generated by ASU’s success last season” with cash from ticket sales “expected to dwarf the ticket revenue from the 2023 season ($11.6M)” and reports of 7.5K new season ticket holders in 2025. And Mike Gundy has been a great coach for a long time. You know, coaching is teaching, teaching is the ability to inspire learning, and for those of us who kind of get that, and that’s been our self-gratification for so many years. Embracing paying the players has been a little bit harder, and I think that ultimately is what got them at Oklahoma State.” (link)

Oregon’s uniform machine is a 25-year collaboration between Nike designers and the Ducks’ equipment hub, with longtime equipment admin Kenny Farr – the “godfather” of Oregon uniforms – managing, customizing, and archiving the looks, and ESPN’s Paolo Uggetti takes an inside look at at the life cycle of a Ducks football uniform. Housed in the Marcus Mariota Performance Center, a hallway that holds around 800 jerseys spanning neon to chrome, part of nine generations and 50 iterations since a late-’90s reset that asked, “How do you make a duck look cool?” Farr notes that “we don't have the tradition that Ohio State or USC or Notre Dame or some of those blue bloods have. So how do you counteract that? Well, you just go full steam ahead the other direction. Our tradition is to be untraditional; we're going to always push the edge." Today, players help script each season’s five base “Generation O” kits via a uniform committee, which may even test drive combos on the EA Sports video game. Farr adds novelty mostly through helmets – the piece he can tweak weekly – and tells Uggetti: "Fans' expectations are so high for something new and cool, like you're going to have some groundbreaking uniform that's never been done before every single game. But that's not reality. I would say the last probably six or seven years is really where I got the sense of there's some weeks where some fans are disappointed because they're expecting us to have a helmet or a jersey with LED lights in it, and we didn't do that.” Lots more. The WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks have announced plans to build a $150M training and practice facility in El Segundo. Scheduled to open in 2027, the 55K-square-foot facility will be designed in partnership with Gensler and become the league's first-ever indoor-outdoor player sanctuary. Features include an outdoor spa pool for recovery and pre-hab/rehab, dedicated nap rooms, flexible wellness spaces for yoga and meditation, hydrotherapy and spa suites, two WNBA regulation basketball courts, a circular locker room designed to foster team unity and more. For tax-exempt institutions, corporate sponsorships can serve as a “Trojan horse,” creating unrelated business income (UBI) exposure where institutions least expect it, per James Moore’s Katie Davis and Alicia Welch, who add that “even sophisticated institutions stumble on the nuances of IRS rules around corporate sponsorships. The difference between qualified sponsorship payments and taxable advertising income is not always intuitive. And mistakes can be costly. [...] The question of whether a sponsor receives a substantial return benefit is murky, largely because valuing those benefits is subjective and often imprecise. The IRS rules are conceptually clear but practically vague. A sponsor’s logo and slogan are fine, but only if they don’t include qualitative or comparative claims (saying ‘Best Sportswear on the Planet’ triggers UBI). Hyperlinks to a sponsor’s website are allowed unless that page contains your endorsement. Combination messages (acknowledgement plus marketing) default to taxable advertising. As one of our clients described it, ‘It feels like walking a tightrope in a fog.’ [...] Institutions should bridge the gap by identifying potential UBI exposure before it becomes a problem and weighing that exposure against their own risk tolerance. This means proactively reviewing agreements, valuing sponsorship benefits and making informed decisions. That proactive step is often what keeps an ambiguous sponsorship from becoming a tax headache.” More. (link)
