Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports “the 10 non-FBS conferences lobbying to amend the SCORE Act sent Congress a letter in support of its passing. The 10 reached an agreement with power leagues during meetings in Chicago last week over changes in the bill.” From the letter: “Our coalition of ten conferences representing one-third of NCAA Division I, more than 100 universities and over 40K student-athletes write in support of the SCORE Act (H.R. 4312) and its passage in the House. [...] We have consistently supported the key tenets of the SCORE ACT while also seeking important protections for all of Division I. Our coalition is encouraged by the Autonomy Four’s recent commitment to protecting Division I membership standards for all institutions long into the future by requiring a higher threshold to approve future changes. [...] We value the contributions from the student-athletes in the decision-making process, which includes our support for current and recently former student-athletes to have a minimum number of votes on certain intercollegiate athletic associations’ rulemaking bodies.” Full letter. Missouri Valley Conference Commissioner Jeff Jackson talks to The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman & Rob Dauster, saying “the quicker the better” on NCAA Tournament expansion: “There are so many quality teams. Does anybody think that if Drake didn’t win our tournament [last year] that they didn’t deserve a place in the Field? And I’m not saying that they would not have been able to get into the first 68, but I certainly would go to bed at night feeling a lot more comfortable if there were eight more slots.” More from Jackson: “We probably have a field that’s a little bit too narrow considering how many schools make legitimate investments in the sport of basketball. So I’m hopeful that at some point we’re able to get to 76, and as far as I’m concerned, the quicker the better.” (link)

On3’s Pete Nakos reports “Arkansas athletic director Hunter Yurachek says the school negotiated [former Football HC] Sam Pittman's buyout down to 62% of his remaining contract. Brings it down to roughly $7.6M.” (link)

More from Louisville AD Josh Heird on his push to reinstate UofL’s 2013 Men’s Basketball national championship as he points to Michigan’s recent infractions case, with penalties that didn’t include any vacated victories, as a source of optimism: “I think the Michigan case is the first case where we can really point to the precedent and say we’ve been treated unfairly. You have an institution that actively put a scheme together to gain a competitive advantage by cheating, but they (the NCAA) didn’t take their championship banner away. That seems very unfair.” (link)

SEC Network host/analyst Paul Finebaum is “considering” leaving ESPN to run for the U.S. Senate in Alabama as a Republican, per Outkick’s Dan Zaksheske, who notes that Finebaum was reluctant to consider the possibility because recently retired Auburn Men’s Basketball HC Bruce Pearl had expressed interest in the seat. Finebaum: “I was… hesitant at first because I was very aware of Bruce’s interest and [I'm a] huge fan of Bruce… I didn’t take it too seriously. I ended up talking to someone… who made it clear that there was a desire for me to be involved. And this person… was compelling and compassionate in the approach to me, and I started thinking about this. [...] [It would be] impossible to tell [President Trump] no. There's no way I could. I would tell him yes. The biggest issue is the direction of ‘Where are we going [as a country]?’ And I don't like some of that. When I watch a newscast, I know how biased it is because I do this for a living. And that's incredibly disturbing. But I keep all this to myself. I feel this is a cathartic conversation for me because I'm saying some things that I really did not intend to say when I walked in this room.” (link)

An ACC spokesperson has confirmed a Georgia Tech defender should have received a penalty for being offside at the snap with 1:48 left in the Yellow Jackets’ 30-29 (OT) victory over Wake Forest, reports the Winston-Salem Journal’s John Dell. When reached for comment, Wake Forest AD John Currie didn’t want to discuss the specific play but appreciated the league’s swift response to the officials’ error, remarking: “I appreciate the proactive steps Commissioner Jim Phillips and supervisor of officials have taken to establishing the ACC as a leader in transparency for officiating. The speed of the game and complexity of the rules means that officiating mistakes are inevitable, just as they are for coaches, players and AD's for that matter. I believe we should continue to identify opportunities to utilize technology to ensure outcome impacting technical violations can be corrected, without disrupting the flow of the game. … Whether it's giving coaches one challenge per game or having a hot button in the last two minutes of a contest, there are solutions we should explore.” (link)

A Michigan federal judge has dismissed an antitrust lawsuit brought by former Michigan Football student-athletes Denard Robinson, Braylon Edwards, Michael Martin and Shawn Crable, contending they’re owed more than $50M from the NCAA, Big Ten and Big Ten Network over continued use of their NIL. Per Sportico’s Michael McCann, the basic problem with the case is “the former players waited too long to sue. Antitrust claims have a statute of limitations of four years, and these players haven’t played in college for decades. The math is straightforward. While judges can toll statutes of limitations, in effect suspending the statute to allow litigation, none in the [Thurl] Bailey, [Mario] Chalmers, [Terrelle] Pryor and Robinson cases found sufficient reason to do so. [...] The players, who can appeal [U.S. District Judge Terrence G.] Berg’s order to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, seek for their case to become a class action on behalf of college athletes who played prior to June 15, 2016, and whose NIL has been used in videos and other materials without their consent. [...] The four players failed to ‘specifically allege’ that the NCAA, Big Ten and Big Ten Network ‘engaged in fraudulent concealment or otherwise secreted or concealed’ how they’d use the players’ NIL. Not only was there no conspiracy to hide, Berg explained, but the players admit they signed NCAA forms detailing how their publicity rights could be used. Berg therefore concluded the players acknowledge ‘NIL rules were well-known to them.’” More. (link)

The introduction of NIL money and the NCAA lifting its ban on Canadian Hockey League (CHL) players in November 2024 have led to what appears to be a “mass exodus” of players from the league to Division I programs, according to the AP’s John Wawrow, who observes “the influx of CHL talent should elevate college hockey to an even higher standard.” Air Force Men’s Hockey HC Frank Serratore: “We're witnessing a paradigm shift the size of which college hockey's never seen. Like it's massive. I tell you what, DI hockey players have always been members of an exclusive club. And that club is about to become even more exclusive. Many rosters are going to be unrecognizable from a year ago. I've spoken to a lot of coaches who feel their fourth lines this year are going to be as good or better than their second lines.” Per Wawrow, “the floodgates have opened, with College Hockey Insider reporting nearly 325 CHL players committing to U.S. colleges for this season and beyond. [...] Ideally, prospects have the opportunity to enjoy the best of both worlds. They can spend their first two or three years competing against their peers in the CHL or USHL, before determining whether to further their development in college.” More. (link)

In a recent appearance on the Coach's Wife Life podcast with Kristen Eargle, D1.relocation COO Ernest Firth III detailed the immense logistical and emotional toll of moving on coaching families, describing it as a "full-blown life reset." He explained how D1.relocation, differs from, and offers much more than, a standard moving company by acting as a single point of advocacy to simplify the relocation process for coaches and administrators. Firth noted that D1.relocation was built by "an empathetic group of leaders" who intimately understand the unique challenges of a career in college athletics and are prepared to assist families regardless of their school or budget. More from North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham and Executive Assoc. AD Steve Newmark’s sitdown with TarHeel247’s Andrew Jones. Asked what areas the Tar Heels have pinpointed to increase revenue generation, Cunningham believes there are two main avenues, including stadium naming. “What we've done historically is gifts as opposed to naming rights for facilities that have a term limit to it. Courts, court signage and jersey patches. Those are probably the two biggest ones. Jersey obviously hasn't passed yet from an NCAA standpoint. But those are probably the biggest ticket items that probably have the quickest impact but also the longest sales cycle." As it relates to campus support and the future of college athletics, Cunningham observes: “I think the financial model is changing. I think what we have done historically is taken all the revenue from football and basketball and subsidized everybody else. I think what you're starting to see is football and basketball have enough revenue to sustain themselves. But if we're going to maintain 28 teams, there needs to be additional support of those teams. So that's what you're seeing. Some of that was the women's basketball practice gym, some of it was additional support. And just how are we going to make sure that we provide these opportunities? And you see it all across the country." (link)

Illinois AD Josh Whitman joins the Illinois LawCast and remarks that “the athletics program was not in a great place” when he arrived, and “we’ve just gradually and steadily over the last 10 years tried to take on individual steps towards a better future. And now we’re enjoying that better future. … Now for us it’s making sure that we stay hungry, that we don’t allow an ounce of complacency to enter our bodies and that we continue to look and strive for what’s next and looking for ways to raise the bar and continue to elevate the program. … The great thing about sports is there’s a scoreboard, and unless you’re winning the last event in every sport every year, there’s always more to do. And so we’re continually looking for places to provide additional support to our student-athletes, to help our coaches and our support staff take another step forward. … And if you are an inherent competitor as I am, you don’t need somebody to prescribe what the next steps are – you’re constantly looking at your program, trying to figure out where we can be better.” More from Whitman. Rutgers AD Keli Zinn participated in a fireside chat at the New Jersey Women Business Leaders Forum and noted of the growth of women’s sports: “The biggest way that people can move the needle on that is through the direct consumption of sports, right? At the end of the day, when you look at TV viewership, revenue and all the things that's driving the almighty dollar of sports, it's really based upon consumption. And so those numbers are not going to change until people do take notice and genuinely support and get behind women's programs.” Zinn also points out that “we consistently drew 12,000 every night for a gymnastics meet [at LSU]. I'm not going to talk about our attendance here at Rutgers because it's my job now to move that in a better direction, but you take something like that and the comparable, it's as simple as people getting behind something that they're passionate about and starting there to be able to move the needle on that sport. Same thing for women's basketball and a number of them. I mean, they were genuinely showing in data and metrics that equate to financial gain and revenue that they were moving the needle at LSU. And so I'm going to do my part to – at minimum – bring exposure to that here so people can see it is a possibility that can be attained.” More. (link)

Buffalo AD Mark Alnutt and Kent State Vice AD Randale Richmond sit down with Norfolk State Director of Corporate Sponsorships and Marketing Jazmin Elliott to reflect on how they align their foundational values and how they use their values to connect with today’s student-athletes despite a changing value proposition for athletics. Alnutt ties adaptation to bedrock values – family and faith – plus hard work and being a great teammate, and stresses the importance of embracing change and being proactive. His operational non-negotiable is to “communicate, communicate, communicate” across all constituencies. He adds: “You cannot do it by yourself. Build your network – build a network of people that you might want to refer to as your personal board of directors that’s going to help guide you through this journey in life. … You’re going to run into [hard times]. How do you respond—with your attitude, with your passion, being overly prepared. … You persevere, you’re going to have success.” Richmond adds: “Throughout this time period of change, that’s when your values are the most important because things that you are familiar with or things that you're used to, they're all being upended. So where do you go to focus on what your sole purpose is? And in this industry, our sole purpose are the student athletes. So as the change is happening, we want to make sure that we collide and connect with them.” Full conversation on AthleticDirectorU. (link)

Arkansas has parted ways with Football HC Sam Pittman, who is due a $9.3M buyout, and CBS’ Will Backus explains: “Pittman signed a new contract with Arkansas in June 2022. … The deal extended Pittman through the 2026 season automatically and added another year to 2027 when he won seven games in 2022. It also increased Pittman's annual salary to $5M and adjusted his buyout structure. Since Arkansas made the decision to fire Pittman while he had a record above .500 since the 2021 season, it will owe him approximately $9.3M in buyout money. If the Razorbacks waited for that record since 2021 to drop below .500, the figure would have been closer to $5.7M. Since 2021, the Razorbacks are now 29-27. Razorbacks OC Bobby Petrino will serve as Interim HC. (link, link)

USC women’s basketball standout JuJu Watkins will not compete this season to focus on recovering from the season-ending injury she suffered during the NCAA Tournament. Trojans HC Lindsay Gottlieb: "JuJu's health and well-being are our top priority, and we fully support her decision to focus on recovery this season. While we will certainly miss her impact on the court, she continues to play a vital role in our program as a leader and teammate. The strength and maturity she has shown through this process is a reflection of who she is, and we know the Trojan Family will continue to rally behind her. We look forward to the day she returns to competition stronger than ever." (link)

Rong Niu – better known as the unicycle performer Red Panda – plans to return to courts throughout college basketball and the NBA this season. Niu sustained a serious wrist injury during a WNBA game in July, and her agent, Pat Figley, says in a memo: "We are sending out this note to thank everyone for their heartfelt wishes to Red Panda for a speedy recovery from her fall. It was a very serious injury and she did require surgery. She appreciated all the sincere follow-up. It was amazing and very touching. She really appreciates all of the support. She is recovering well and is practicing. She is looking forward to performing this season." (link)

Louisiana Tech Senior Assoc. AD for Championship Resources/CRO Wally Crittenden and former NAADD President/former CEO of the VMI Foundation Brian Crockett visited with College.town’s Kristen Eargle to discuss all things development from past to present. On what young professionals should focus on, Crockett remarks: “Having a plan. I talk to so many young people, and it’s an easy conversation that a plan really has to have a start date and an end date. That’s all it has to have, and it can evolve over a period of time. Then, you have to show flexibility.” Crittenden adds: “You’ve got to be a good teammate. You’ve got to show up every day willing to compete and do the best that you can to make the team better and understand it’s bigger than you. The other thing I would say is to try to understand and appreciate how important the job they’re doing is. They are the source of continuity for storytelling across sports and departments. Coaches come and go, athletes come and go. Many of our senior administrators are, to put it even better perhaps, the caretaker of continuity on a campus and it’s important that you understand that’s a role that you have. I think sometimes that gets lost as we try to figure out how we’re going to get through day-to-day but understanding the role that you play in the continuity of the program is important.” More from Crittenden and Crockett. U.S. District Court Judge Tiffany R. Johnson on Thursday dismissed all but one type of claim brought by former Kentucky swimmer Riley Gaines and more than a dozen other female athletes against the NCAA, Georgia and other defendants over the eligibility of transgender student-athletes. Sportico’s Michael McCann and Daniel Libit explain that Johnson “identified a number of problems in Gaines’ legal theories. One flaw is a law called the Riley Gaines Act. For starters, Johnson found Gaines’ demands for Georgia, the Georgia Tech Athletic Association and assorted other defendants associated with the state to be moot. The Riley Gaines Act, which Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed into law in April, prohibits Georgia universities from, as Johnson summarized, ‘hosting or participating in competitions where biologically male athletes are permitted to either compete against biologically female athletes or use female-designated restrooms and other facilities.’ The judge noted this law prohibits ‘exactly the conduct’ Gaines targets in the complaint. The remedy sought by Gaines is therefore already in place, meaning her claim is no longer needed.” Johnson also dismissed Gaines’ constitutional claims against the NCAA, citing a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in NCAA v. Tarkanian (1988) that the NCAA is not a state actor. Although many NCAA members are public universities, which are state actors, the NCAA is itself a nonprofit organization. More. (link)
