Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek clarifies remarks he made a couple of weeks ago when said his football program wasn’t “setup to win a national championship”: “I was not clear in my response to David Bazzel's question when he asked about financially how we were set up in this new era of college athletics, and that is on me for not being clear in my answer. I answered the question by saying in sports like men's basketball and baseball -- and you can put our track and field programs in that, along with softball and soccer and women's golf and men's golf -- we're set up in those sports really well to compete for and win national championships. And that's evidenced by six teams that earned a No. 1 ranking during the course of the year last year. With our football program, it's set up a little bit differently. It's a tougher mountain to climb. It does not mean they are not set up right now to compete for and win a national championship, but they're not set up as well as those sports I just mentioned to do so. The investment that we're able to make in our football program right now puts us toward the bottom of the SEC in many budget categories, such as recruiting, travel, operational expenses, support staff salaries, assistant coach salaries and head coach compensation. Those other sports, because of the size of the programs and the size of the staff, we can make small, incremental investments that push them toward the top of the SEC and better position them to be able to compete for and win national championships.” (link)

More from Fayetteville as Whole Hog Sports’ Matt Jones reports Arkansas is nearing a deal with current MMR rights holder Learfield to allow naming rights to be sold for Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium. Hogs AD Hunter Yurachek believes a naming rights partner could generate $4M to $5M per year with a 12- to 15-month timeline to get a deal done. Yurachek provides context on if other companies were considered as the sales partner: “Learfield already owns the assets. They own the advertising space. Someone was going to take another slice of the pie. There really is no way to make the numbers work with a company outside of Learfield. We did seek other bids, but once you really sharpened your pencil it didn’t make financial sense to go with anyone other than Learfield.” (link)

Nearly four months after Florida A&M AD Angela Suggs’ arrest on fraud and theft charges dating back to her prior job with the Florida Sports Foundation, The Florida State Attorney's office has agreed to close the case and offer a deferred prosecution agreement for Suggs. The decision has allowed Suggs to enroll in a pretrial intervention program and if she follows the rules for two years, the State will dismiss her charges. FAMU announced June 10 that Suggs was placed on administrative leave with pay till further notice. Suggs makes $250K/year and is on a three-year contract. (link)

WDRB’s Eric Crawford says Louisville AD Josh Heird has “quietly opened a dialogue" with the NCAA regarding the reinstatement of Men’s Basketball’s vacated 2013 national championship. Heird: “...with everything that’s transpired in college athletics — not only the changes, but just some of the recent decisions that have been handed down relative to some recent infractions cases that weren’t taken away.” More from Crawford: “Heird said he has had one initial conversation with the NCAA, during which he shared his concerns and outlined what the university would like to pursue. He said no follow-up discussion has occurred yet, but he expects to get input from the association and hopes to continue the conversation.” (link)

More consternation within the SMU support base concerning the longevity & use of “Pony Up” as the Wall Street Journal's Laine Higgins gets feedback from a plethora of alumni and others close to the program. Alum Greg Gaylor on Board of Trustees Chair/mega booster David Miller’s stance on ‘Pony Up’ dying a natural death, “Obviously he doesn’t know a goddamn thing about marketing. To mess with something that works is the height of stupidity.” What do Football HC Rhett Lashlee and Men’s Basketball HC Andy Enfield think of the rebrand? According to Higgins, “They didn’t hate ‘Pony Up.’ But they didn’t love explaining to recruits that their mascot was the type they might ride at a kid’s birthday party.” Two-time SMU grad Joseph Magnuson: “The cultural reference point I see the most is the comparison of this to the Cracker Barrel rebrand. Terrible idea.” Meanwhile, this week the student senate unanimously approved a measure proclaiming “Pony Up” as the slogan of SMU athletics. More. (link)

WRAL News’ Brian Murphy reports on how North Carolina Football HC Bill Belichick, NC State Football HC Dave Doeren and Duke Football HC Manny Diaz attempt to handle the stressors associated with their job. Belichick: ”At some point, you just have to realize there's a point of diminishing returns. And a lot of times a good night's sleep is better than a few more hours of less productive time. It's a long season, and you’ve got to pace yourself. … I think that's important that you don't get worn out in training camp and then aren't able to sustain it during the season.” Doeren: “We get our coaches out of here so they can be with their families and get that quality time with their spouses and children. So there’s some balance. What we seek is that balance, and it's my job to kind of feel the pulse, not just with the staff, but with the players. When do we need to push them harder? When do we need to back off a little bit? As a head coach, you're responsible for the environment that your team and your staff work in and prepare in and practice in and lift in, recover in, and so I pay a lot of attention to that.” Diaz: “From 10:30 to 12:30 every day is our personal time. I don’t want anybody in the office. I want guys lifting weights. Sometimes the staff will play basketball. You can go for a walk. You can do something, but you’re not going to do work. I believe that the better physical condition we’re in, the better mental condition, the better teachers we’ll be, the faster thinkers we’ll be, the better to analyze. We’ll be more available for our players. … In terms of work-life balance, it's never going to be a 50-50 balance, but you can try to push it as much as the restraints of the job will allow you to allow these men to be the best versions of themselves.” More. On3’s Pete Nakos delves into the reasons behind the early struggles some blue-chip college football quarterbacks are facing in the 2025 campaign with one top 25 program’s HC remarking: “So much of a quarterback is their development. In today’s day and age, when everybody wants it right now, you’ve got to allow time for these kids to develop, to grow. That’s just a big part of getting quarterbacks to play at a high level; they have to play through some of that stuff. Not everybody’s always willing to do that. That’s probably the biggest challenge these kids are faced with nowadays.” One Big 12 HC mentions part of the issue comes from trying to mimic others: “Everybody’s not [Kansas City Chiefs QB] Pat Mahomes, but everybody thinks they can throw like Pat Mahomes. All these guys think that they can throw off a platform, all of this stuff they think they can do with their arm angles and everything like that. … You’re getting some guys that try to do that, that can’t do that, so they’re missing the things that they can do really well.” Another major factor is pressure, with a Power 4 GM observing: “The amount of pressure it feels like parents and family are putting on them just because they view them as their paycheck. You’ve reached the point, too, in the high school world, where some parents are saying, ‘OK, this is what you’re gonna do for my son. But what are you gonna do for us?’ … It doesn’t surprise me at all that fewer five-stars are hitting.” More. (link)

Georgia will hand out 65K PixMob wristbands to fans coming into Sanford Stadium for tonight’s matchup against Alabama. The wristbands will light up in conjunction with Sanford Stadium lighting, according to Bulldogs Senior Assoc. AD for Marketing & Revenue Strategy Alan Thomas, who adds: "Fireworks are ready, and we’re going to work on something else this week that will tie back into the lights when the lights go out and some music things tied to it, so it should be fun. So get there, be very accepting of what you’re going to be handed when you walk in that door because you will be part of the show." (link)

In the latest NCAA/CFO College Football Rules Review Media Video, National Coordinator of Football Officials/Secretary-Rules Editor Steve Shaw offers a quick report on extra periods during the 2025 season, remarking: “So far, we’ve had nine overtime games in FBS. So, roughly 3% of our games go into extra periods, and of those games, six of the nine have been decided in one overtime period. … Three have been decided in two overtimes. We’ve not gotten to a third extra period.” (link)

Central Michigan AD Amy Folan and Deputy AD/SWA Tangela Cheatham sit down with AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to offer insight into how the Chippewas develop autonomous senior leaders within their department. Folan discusses her perspective on creating team culture via hiring strategies while Cheatham provides perspective on assessing “fit” in a job opportunity. Folan and Cheatham also talk about engaging mid-level staffers, expanding their leadership styles to accommodate different generations of team members and how they maneuver through expectations for the department via collaborative goal-setting and consistent communication. When evaluating potential hires, Cheatham explains that one thing that stands out is when a candidate talks about “how they’re going to impact the people around them. I love when people are striving for [upward mobility], but really want to hear someone who is talking about how they're going to serve the department or the community that they’re in, how they’re going to have an impact on the lives of the student-athletes, coaches, campus partners we work with to help them understand what we’re doing. So, someone who’s thinking about the whole and not just kind of that one thing that we’re looking to bring them in for. And also looking for people that I can continue to help develop. So, what are you interested in? Are you interested in something outside of what we’re looking and talking to you about? And how can we get you that exposure? That’s something that Amy’s done very well.” Lots more on ADU. (link)

Big Sky Commissioner Tom Wistrcill to HERO Sports’ Sam Herder on the potential privatization of the FCS Playoffs: “You sit there with an open mind. You listen to lots of ideas, and your mind goes about 100 different directions with all of the various things at play. And it was very intriguing. It’s step one of a long process, but you have to take step one and have an open mind of different ideas. In this day and age with the financial pressures that our schools are under, we have to get creative in trying to find ways to help them out. And this is certainly worthy of our time to start exploring things like that. I felt like everybody had an open mind. Everybody was positive about the fact that we have to be open to these types of potential opportunities. And we decided, ‘Hey, let’s take the next step. Let’s talk to the NCAA. Let’s talk to our own people within our conferences about some of the things we learned. And then let’s see where it goes from there.’ I mean, it’s a little scary, it’s all new, it’s shiny, and cool, and scary. It has all of those different adjectives to it. But I think as a group, we were like, ‘Yeah, let’s crawl before we walk and see where it leads us.’ So that’s where we left the room.” (link)

With the dedication of the south end zone building at FirstBank Stadium, the renovations to Vanderbilt’s football home are now officially complete, and Commodores AD Candice Lee remarks: "Some days were very challenging, especially in 2021 and 2022. But the reality is that one of the things we've learned is that you have to be agile, and you can't pick one lane. We have to be good in…multiple lanes. So we needed both (NIL support and updated facilities), and thankfully, people answered the call." Football HC Clark Lea adds: "I think for so long, the program has been treated almost like it's second class. I think it's important internally that we have to treat it as we believe it to be, and that's the best in the country. ... Our job is not just to celebrate that change, but to push and pull and to take it further so that it can be sustained success and we can celebrate championships here." Athletic departments have found a workaround to circumvent House settlement NIL restrictions, according to Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich, who explains that “athletic departments are now acting as de facto agencies for their players, securing outside deals or incorporating NIL guarantees for players in their own sponsors’ contracts. Some schools have created formal in-house ‘agencies,’ while others are simply relying on athletic department officials to procure deals as part of their day-to-day.” Ohio State AD Ross Bjork: “We can now help our athletes really serve as a marketing agency to go out and source opportunities, whether it’s corporate opportunities, whether it’s local opportunities, whether it’s social media opportunities. That’s going to be the next race.” Louisville AD Josh Heird now asks interested parties for NIL deals, rather than a corporate sponsorship he may have desired in the past. Heird: “How do we try to create ‘true NIL’ opportunities? Because it’s going to help our student-athletes; it’s going to help our athletic department as far as above the cap amounts, and presumably provide competitive advantage for us? That’s what we’re trying to do.” (link)

More from the Bluegrass State as In response to a query on whether the Kentucky-Louisville Football rivalry would survive the SEC and ACC’s upcoming expansion to nine-game conference slates, UK AD Mitch Barnhart remarked: “I don’t want to say this the wrong way. We don’t need any help scheduling. I think we’re good. We’ve got to play an (Autonomous) Four opponent. So that's part of it. It doesn't make a lot of sense for us to go get on a plane and spend quarter of a million dollars to go someplace else when we've got one 80 miles down the road. It’s good for both fan bases. I see no reason to challenge that, unless there's some other underlying reason to do that. It's good for our communities. It's good for our financial, economic structures where we all live.” UofL AD Josh Heird: “I'll just say, we haven't even talked about it. And from my end, I didn't feel like I needed to, because I'm just assuming that we're going to play every year, because it's extremely important to the Commonwealth, and it's something that our fans want, it's something that our coaches want, and our expectation is for it to happen. When they went to nine games, yeah, I was worried that [SEC teams] are not going to play those games. And that’s probably going to play out here a little bit. But UK wasn’t one of them.” (link)

One additional nugget from Nebraska AD Troy Dannen’s comments on Football HC Matt Rhule hosting his own podcast and making appearances on The Pat McAfee Show. Dannen notes the “Big Ten does not have ESPN exposure now, and the fact that we get that exposure through what Matt’s doing is really, really important. We discussed at the beginning of the year, should I or should I not do this? You cannot underestimate that ESPN exposure. I think him doing a Dave Portnoy interview – and Dave Portnoy now is a part of Fox, and Fox is the cornerstone partner of the Big Ten – those relationships are important, whether it’s ESPN, where we’re not on, or Fox where we are on. Having the credibility with those folks in the media today…not everybody’s willing to do that. Not everybody can do that, and it’s hard to do it coming off a loss, but that is how the program gets that next level of exposure that we didn’t have to worry about in ‘95.” (link)

KHON2’s Cameron Macedonio reports Aloha Stadium’s demolition has officially been authorized with construction to follow after completion, thanks to the execution of two agreements between the New Aloha Stadium Entertainment District and Aloha Hālawa District Partners. Per the agreement, Aloha Hālawa District Partners “gets the rights and obligations to dismantle the existing stadium and construct the new site before returning the property back to the care of the state. [...] The current stadium is set to be completely dismantled by July 2026, with the new facility slated to open in March 2029.” The state of Hawai’i is contributing $350M to construction and demolition costs with current plans outlining a 22,500-seat stadium capacity and 10 luxury boxes as well as the ability to expand should the project receive additional funding. Per tracking firm Circana’s July sales report, EA Sports College Football 26 was the best selling game for the month in the U.S. and is also the third best-selling game of the year. While sales for the latest CFB release’s sophomore effort aren't trending higher comparable to the 2024 release, Circana Executive Director for Video Games Mat Piscatella notes that shouldn’t be market-watchers’ focus, remarking: “I also don’t believe this ever should have been expected, given how long it had been since the last college football game was released. EA Sports College Football 25 broke into the mainstream in a big way and has generated more full game dollar sales than any other sports video game in U.S. history. College Football 26 is doing very well, ranking third in YTD dollar sales after its launch.” (link)

Meanwhile, The Wall Street Journal’s Lauren Thomas, Jessica Toonkel and Miriam Gottfried report Electronics Arts is nearing a deal to go private in what would likely be the largest leveraged buyout of all time. Per the authors, “a group of investors including private-equity firm Silver Lake, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) and Jared Kushner’s investment firm Affinity Partners could unveil a deal for the publisher best known for its sports games as soon as next week. [...] Discussions on price are still underway but the deal could value EA at as much as $50B. […] Silver Lake, a technology-focused firm which manages about $110B, has made other investments in gaming. The firm owns a stake in Unity Software, which makes game-development software. EA has been a major Unity customer, and former Unity CEO John Riccitiello was previously CEO of EA. PIF already holds a roughly 10% stake in EA.” (link)

The Big 12’s agreement with AllState “is just the latest in a series of partnerships designed to boost the national profile of the league while also closing the financial gap between the Big 12 and the SEC/Big Ten,” according to NIL Wire’s Joan Niesen and Jamie Plunkett, who note while specifics remain unclear, a “partnership with these types of assets typically sits in the three- to four-year, $10 to $20M range.” Through the new deal, the league now has Venmo as an official partner and AllState as a presenting sponsor for its Olympic sports championships, with the authors observing that “stacking” partnerships for one or a series of events isn’t uncommon and “the practice will probably become more common as the league tries to close the financial gap.” Per Niesen and Plunkett, “with this Allstate partnership, along with several others, growing the commercial side of the business is beginning to take shape. [...] One Big 12 representative indicated that the league is in the process of selling the presenting sponsor rights for the football championship as well as other sponsorships for the men’s and women’s basketball championships, with the hopes that those deals will be finalized in time for the events in 2025 and beyond. Phillips 66 is the title sponsor of the men’s and women’s basketball championships — a partnership that dates back to 1988, when the league was still the Big Eight. The energy company is also the title sponsor of the Big 12 baseball and softball tournaments. How the league plans to stack sponsorships alongside Phillips 66 is yet to be determined.” (link)
