“I have committed to several donors that I promise we won't look like a NASCAR driver's fire suit will show up at any time… I personally believe the entire country, and sports fan base, is getting acclimated to seeing more marketing and promotion integrated into the games. I think it may have been something that would have been a shock to the system 20 years ago, but I think everybody has seen the evolution of sports, and collegiate athletics is clearly not on the leading edge of doing that. If you look at professional sports, they've been much more aggressive in integrating brands and properties. So, I think it's just a natural evolution, and I think if we do it in the right way and integrate partners that are authentic to who we are, I think that will work with how we operate.” That’s North Carolina Executive Assoc. AD Steve Newmark on framework of sponsorship & advertising opportunities ahead for UNC & college athletics overall. Tar Heels AD Bubba Cunningham adds: “This is 25 to 30 years ago when Disney really got into the corporate sponsorship and sports, I think they did it exceptionally well. You've got Augusta, you've got Wimbledon. I think there's places that have completely integrated sponsors in a much different way. And I think that's really what we would attempt to do. Disney had a wedding chapel and it was sponsored by Waterford. They had their baseball stadium by Toro. If you put Modelo on the (football coaches') headsets, probably not a good idea. Modelo sponsoring a beer garden makes sense. So, it just becomes part and parcel to what you're doing. I think that's where the sponsorship experience that he (Newmark) brings to us is going to be really valuable to Carolina. Let's make sure that it fits with what we're doing and what we're saying as an institution culturally. What's the right fit for us?” (link)

More from Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman during a sit down with SBJ’s Abe Madkour at last week’s Game Changers Conference. In reflecting on her career path, Ackerman remarked: “I could never have charted my career path. And so any of you who think this is where you’ll be in a year or two or five, good luck with that because I’m just saying that’s not really how life works. And I think what you do is you get yourself in a good position so that when certain types of opportunities come along that you think sound pretty good, like me in the Big East, for example, you’re in a position to be tapped. And so, my advice to young women, especially, is embrace that journey and do a good job wherever you are along the way because your reputation will precede you.” On hosting the Men’s and Women’s Final Four in the same city: “Same weekend, same city. Not this bouncing around. I think it could work. Please, colleagues in college, let’s try it one time. That’s all I ask.” (link)

On the latest episode of “The Career Hustle,’ UCF Senior Executive Assoc. AD for Capital Projects, Events & Operations Marcus Attles visits with College.town’s Kristen Eargle, remarking on how he knew he was ready for more in his career and how he identifies that in others: “The first thing I always say is you have to be great at whatever is being assigned to you. I wanted to be the best at whatever it was that was given to me. If it was credentials, then I was going to be the best credential maker. It didn't matter what it was, no task was too big or small. It was really about showing that value, but then also communicating what my aspirations were. … I got excited about people looking out for me and providing me with opportunities that I didn't even see for myself. For so long in my career and my journey, I was more internal focused. It took other people. It took the Travis Goffs of the world at Northwestern. … to reach out and say ‘Hey, there's more to this. There's a revenue generator. Come along and give a tour and interact with some of our key stakeholders.’ That, for me, was just another way to build relationships, and it was just a great experience. For me, it helped carry me and propel me to where I am now. I look back on that time and try to do the same thing for my staff and put them in places where I know that they're going to have some success. We can really build on the things that they do well and then push them on some of the things that they need to continue to grow in, knowing that I’m there to support them along the way." (link)

Arizona State Football HC Kenny Dillingham’s contract is a “bargain,” writes the San Jose Mercury News’ Jon Wilner, who adds that ASU AD Graham Rossini and President Michael Crow “found a way to extend Dillingham’s contract beyond the five-year limit (for state university employees) imposed by the Arizona Board of Regents” with a new deal, finalized last winter and spanning five years, that features a rollover clause adding an extra year to Dillingham’s contract for every season the Sun Devils win at least six games. Rossini: “I asked President Crow if there was a way for performance to unlock years. Could we include trigger components? We were realistic about what we could do and designed it around the thing that mattered most to Kenny. He valued longevity, so it’s a competitive base with performance upside. Our approach with him was that not one size (i.e., maximum dollars) fits all.” Wilner continues: “The performance triggers allow the contract to remain in place for 10 years — meaning Dillingham would be the longest-tenured coach in ASU history not named Frank Kush when it expires after the 2034 season.” With Dillingham expected to earn $5.8M this year, Wilner notes “it’s a hefty sum compared to the $3.9M Dillingham collected when he took over the depleted program in the winter of 2023. But given the return on ASU’s investment, we’d argue that Dillingham is underpaid in the same fashion any transformative head coach in major college football is underpaid. Dillingham’s compensation doesn’t begin to match the benefits generated by ASU’s success last season” with cash from ticket sales “expected to dwarf the ticket revenue from the 2023 season ($11.6M)” and reports of 7.5K new season ticket holders in 2025. Former Alabama Football HC & current ESPN GameDay headliner Nick Saban during yesterday’s show in regards to the leadership change at Oklahoma State: “Some people have a tougher time embracing the whole idea of paying players, especially some of us old timers you know, it was a little more difficult. And Mike Gundy has been a great coach for a long time. You know, coaching is teaching, teaching is the ability to inspire learning, and for those of us who kind of get that, and that’s been our self-gratification for so many years. Embracing paying the players has been a little bit harder, and I think that ultimately is what got them at Oklahoma State.” (link)

Oregon’s uniform machine is a 25-year collaboration between Nike designers and the Ducks’ equipment hub, with longtime equipment admin Kenny Farr – the “godfather” of Oregon uniforms – managing, customizing, and archiving the looks, and ESPN’s Paolo Uggetti takes an inside look at at the life cycle of a Ducks football uniform. Housed in the Marcus Mariota Performance Center, a hallway that holds around 800 jerseys spanning neon to chrome, part of nine generations and 50 iterations since a late-’90s reset that asked, “How do you make a duck look cool?” Farr notes that “we don't have the tradition that Ohio State or USC or Notre Dame or some of those blue bloods have. So how do you counteract that? Well, you just go full steam ahead the other direction. Our tradition is to be untraditional; we're going to always push the edge." Today, players help script each season’s five base “Generation O” kits via a uniform committee, which may even test drive combos on the EA Sports video game. Farr adds novelty mostly through helmets – the piece he can tweak weekly – and tells Uggetti: "Fans' expectations are so high for something new and cool, like you're going to have some groundbreaking uniform that's never been done before every single game. But that's not reality. I would say the last probably six or seven years is really where I got the sense of there's some weeks where some fans are disappointed because they're expecting us to have a helmet or a jersey with LED lights in it, and we didn't do that.” Lots more. For tax-exempt institutions, corporate sponsorships can serve as a “Trojan horse,” creating unrelated business income (UBI) exposure where institutions least expect it, per James Moore’s Katie Davis and Alicia Welch, who add that “even sophisticated institutions stumble on the nuances of IRS rules around corporate sponsorships. The difference between qualified sponsorship payments and taxable advertising income is not always intuitive. And mistakes can be costly. [...] The question of whether a sponsor receives a substantial return benefit is murky, largely because valuing those benefits is subjective and often imprecise. The IRS rules are conceptually clear but practically vague. A sponsor’s logo and slogan are fine, but only if they don’t include qualitative or comparative claims (saying ‘Best Sportswear on the Planet’ triggers UBI). Hyperlinks to a sponsor’s website are allowed unless that page contains your endorsement. Combination messages (acknowledgement plus marketing) default to taxable advertising. As one of our clients described it, ‘It feels like walking a tightrope in a fog.’ [...] Institutions should bridge the gap by identifying potential UBI exposure before it becomes a problem and weighing that exposure against their own risk tolerance. This means proactively reviewing agreements, valuing sponsorship benefits and making informed decisions. That proactive step is often what keeps an ambiguous sponsorship from becoming a tax headache.” More. (link)

Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek clarifies remarks he made a couple of weeks ago when said his football program wasn’t “setup to win a national championship”: “I was not clear in my response to David Bazzel's question when he asked about financially how we were set up in this new era of college athletics, and that is on me for not being clear in my answer. I answered the question by saying in sports like men's basketball and baseball -- and you can put our track and field programs in that, along with softball and soccer and women's golf and men's golf -- we're set up in those sports really well to compete for and win national championships. And that's evidenced by six teams that earned a No. 1 ranking during the course of the year last year. With our football program, it's set up a little bit differently. It's a tougher mountain to climb. It does not mean they are not set up right now to compete for and win a national championship, but they're not set up as well as those sports I just mentioned to do so. The investment that we're able to make in our football program right now puts us toward the bottom of the SEC in many budget categories, such as recruiting, travel, operational expenses, support staff salaries, assistant coach salaries and head coach compensation. Those other sports, because of the size of the programs and the size of the staff, we can make small, incremental investments that push them toward the top of the SEC and better position them to be able to compete for and win national championships.” (link)

More from Fayetteville as Whole Hog Sports’ Matt Jones reports Arkansas is nearing a deal with current MMR rights holder Learfield to allow naming rights to be sold for Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium. Hogs AD Hunter Yurachek believes a naming rights partner could generate $4M to $5M per year with a 12- to 15-month timeline to get a deal done. Yurachek provides context on if other companies were considered as the sales partner: “Learfield already owns the assets. They own the advertising space. Someone was going to take another slice of the pie. There really is no way to make the numbers work with a company outside of Learfield. We did seek other bids, but once you really sharpened your pencil it didn’t make financial sense to go with anyone other than Learfield.” (link)

Nearly four months after Florida A&M AD Angela Suggs’ arrest on fraud and theft charges dating back to her prior job with the Florida Sports Foundation, The Florida State Attorney's office has agreed to close the case and offer a deferred prosecution agreement for Suggs. The decision has allowed Suggs to enroll in a pretrial intervention program and if she follows the rules for two years, the State will dismiss her charges. FAMU announced June 10 that Suggs was placed on administrative leave with pay till further notice. Suggs makes $250K/year and is on a three-year contract. (link)

WDRB’s Eric Crawford says Louisville AD Josh Heird has “quietly opened a dialogue" with the NCAA regarding the reinstatement of Men’s Basketball’s vacated 2013 national championship. Heird: “...with everything that’s transpired in college athletics — not only the changes, but just some of the recent decisions that have been handed down relative to some recent infractions cases that weren’t taken away.” More from Crawford: “Heird said he has had one initial conversation with the NCAA, during which he shared his concerns and outlined what the university would like to pursue. He said no follow-up discussion has occurred yet, but he expects to get input from the association and hopes to continue the conversation.” (link)

More consternation within the SMU support base concerning the longevity & use of “Pony Up” as the Wall Street Journal's Laine Higgins gets feedback from a plethora of alumni and others close to the program. Alum Greg Gaylor on Board of Trustees Chair/mega booster David Miller’s stance on ‘Pony Up’ dying a natural death, “Obviously he doesn’t know a goddamn thing about marketing. To mess with something that works is the height of stupidity.” What do Football HC Rhett Lashlee and Men’s Basketball HC Andy Enfield think of the rebrand? According to Higgins, “They didn’t hate ‘Pony Up.’ But they didn’t love explaining to recruits that their mascot was the type they might ride at a kid’s birthday party.” Two-time SMU grad Joseph Magnuson: “The cultural reference point I see the most is the comparison of this to the Cracker Barrel rebrand. Terrible idea.” Meanwhile, this week the student senate unanimously approved a measure proclaiming “Pony Up” as the slogan of SMU athletics. More. (link)

WRAL News’ Brian Murphy reports on how North Carolina Football HC Bill Belichick, NC State Football HC Dave Doeren and Duke Football HC Manny Diaz attempt to handle the stressors associated with their job. Belichick: ”At some point, you just have to realize there's a point of diminishing returns. And a lot of times a good night's sleep is better than a few more hours of less productive time. It's a long season, and you’ve got to pace yourself. … I think that's important that you don't get worn out in training camp and then aren't able to sustain it during the season.” Doeren: “We get our coaches out of here so they can be with their families and get that quality time with their spouses and children. So there’s some balance. What we seek is that balance, and it's my job to kind of feel the pulse, not just with the staff, but with the players. When do we need to push them harder? When do we need to back off a little bit? As a head coach, you're responsible for the environment that your team and your staff work in and prepare in and practice in and lift in, recover in, and so I pay a lot of attention to that.” Diaz: “From 10:30 to 12:30 every day is our personal time. I don’t want anybody in the office. I want guys lifting weights. Sometimes the staff will play basketball. You can go for a walk. You can do something, but you’re not going to do work. I believe that the better physical condition we’re in, the better mental condition, the better teachers we’ll be, the faster thinkers we’ll be, the better to analyze. We’ll be more available for our players. … In terms of work-life balance, it's never going to be a 50-50 balance, but you can try to push it as much as the restraints of the job will allow you to allow these men to be the best versions of themselves.” More. On3’s Pete Nakos delves into the reasons behind the early struggles some blue-chip college football quarterbacks are facing in the 2025 campaign with one top 25 program’s HC remarking: “So much of a quarterback is their development. In today’s day and age, when everybody wants it right now, you’ve got to allow time for these kids to develop, to grow. That’s just a big part of getting quarterbacks to play at a high level; they have to play through some of that stuff. Not everybody’s always willing to do that. That’s probably the biggest challenge these kids are faced with nowadays.” One Big 12 HC mentions part of the issue comes from trying to mimic others: “Everybody’s not [Kansas City Chiefs QB] Pat Mahomes, but everybody thinks they can throw like Pat Mahomes. All these guys think that they can throw off a platform, all of this stuff they think they can do with their arm angles and everything like that. … You’re getting some guys that try to do that, that can’t do that, so they’re missing the things that they can do really well.” Another major factor is pressure, with a Power 4 GM observing: “The amount of pressure it feels like parents and family are putting on them just because they view them as their paycheck. You’ve reached the point, too, in the high school world, where some parents are saying, ‘OK, this is what you’re gonna do for my son. But what are you gonna do for us?’ … It doesn’t surprise me at all that fewer five-stars are hitting.” More. (link)

Georgia will hand out 65K PixMob wristbands to fans coming into Sanford Stadium for tonight’s matchup against Alabama. The wristbands will light up in conjunction with Sanford Stadium lighting, according to Bulldogs Senior Assoc. AD for Marketing & Revenue Strategy Alan Thomas, who adds: "Fireworks are ready, and we’re going to work on something else this week that will tie back into the lights when the lights go out and some music things tied to it, so it should be fun. So get there, be very accepting of what you’re going to be handed when you walk in that door because you will be part of the show." (link)

In the latest NCAA/CFO College Football Rules Review Media Video, National Coordinator of Football Officials/Secretary-Rules Editor Steve Shaw offers a quick report on extra periods during the 2025 season, remarking: “So far, we’ve had nine overtime games in FBS. So, roughly 3% of our games go into extra periods, and of those games, six of the nine have been decided in one overtime period. … Three have been decided in two overtimes. We’ve not gotten to a third extra period.” (link)

Central Michigan AD Amy Folan and Deputy AD/SWA Tangela Cheatham sit down with AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to offer insight into how the Chippewas develop autonomous senior leaders within their department. Folan discusses her perspective on creating team culture via hiring strategies while Cheatham provides perspective on assessing “fit” in a job opportunity. Folan and Cheatham also talk about engaging mid-level staffers, expanding their leadership styles to accommodate different generations of team members and how they maneuver through expectations for the department via collaborative goal-setting and consistent communication. When evaluating potential hires, Cheatham explains that one thing that stands out is when a candidate talks about “how they’re going to impact the people around them. I love when people are striving for [upward mobility], but really want to hear someone who is talking about how they're going to serve the department or the community that they’re in, how they’re going to have an impact on the lives of the student-athletes, coaches, campus partners we work with to help them understand what we’re doing. So, someone who’s thinking about the whole and not just kind of that one thing that we’re looking to bring them in for. And also looking for people that I can continue to help develop. So, what are you interested in? Are you interested in something outside of what we’re looking and talking to you about? And how can we get you that exposure? That’s something that Amy’s done very well.” Lots more on ADU. (link)
