The Women’s Basketball Committee has voted to move the 2028 Women’s Final Four from Gainbridge Fieldhouse to Lucas Oil Stadium, gaining approximately 13K seats in the process. Committee Chair/Milwaukee AD Amanda Braun: “Moving the 2028 Women's Final Four to Lucas Oil Stadium will allow for more access for our fans, and it represents the continued growth of the sport. With the interest we have seen, holding the Women's Final Four in a larger venue in Indianapolis is a natural next step.” In addition, the committee also voted to continue with the current preliminary-round format through the 2031 championship. Under the current format, First Four games and the first and second rounds are hosted at 16 nonpredetermined campus sites with the goal of utilizing the top seeds as hosts to increase fan attendance and engagement during early tournament rounds. Braun: "We reviewed alternatives to the First Four, first- and second-round format and the regional format, and the data supports keeping our current model. This will continue to be a point of discussion for the committee as we look to serve tournament participants and fans in the best possible way." (link)

Northern Illinois’ move to the Mountain West as a football-only member will be worth more than $34M over the next six seasons, per On3’s Brett McMurphy, who adds that NIU’s estimated overall revenue from the Mountain West will be about $5.7M annually from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2032. As part of its membership agreement, the Huskies will reap a $1.5M signing bonus from the league, which will also pay up to $2.5M for NIU’s MAC exit fee buyout, the MW “estimates NIU will receive between $2.3M and $2.6M in media rights revenue alone in 2026-27, with that amount expected to increase by 10% in the following seasons. As a football-only member, NIU will receive 75% of a full Mountain West member’s share in 2026-27, increasing to 85% of a full member’s share from 2027-2031. However, NIU will only be required to pay 30% of full member dues to the MW, estimated at $220K per year.” Also, NIU is bound by the league’s Grant of Rights agreement, “must pay the Mountain West a $2M entrance fee, split into six payments of $333,333.25 on each July 1 from 2026 to 2031,” and the MW “is requiring NIU to increase its football budget to at least $13.5M before the start of the 2026 football season and at least $15M before the beginning of the 2027 season.” (link)

The NCAA’s reported decision permitting former G League Ignite player Thierry Darlan to play at Santa Clara “signals a less rigid eligibility model going forward and one less likely to exclude athletes because they already played professionally,” according to Sportico’s Michael McCann, who notes the decision could have broad implications that affect former NBA, MLB and NHL players who bypassed college, but eye college sports NIL and rev share opportunities in their 20s or 30s. McCann continues: “Times have changed. With the NCAA permitting athletes to sign NIL deals and, with the House settlement allowing direct revenue-sharing opportunities from schools, the line between college and pro sports has blurred. [...] We’re also in a time when college athletes are suing to stay in school and to block the NCAA from enforcing rules limiting eligibility to four seasons of intercollegiate competition within a five-year period. [...] Relaxing athlete eligibility rules is also logical given that universities are facing a barrage of financial pressures and, to be blunt, could use the bodies.” More. (link)

SMU Football HC Rhett Lashlee addressed rumors linking him to the open head coaching job at his alma mater, Arkansas: “We’re present and we’re happy here. We’re fully committed to what we’re building here. We got great kids here. We’ve got a really good recruiting class that are freshmen right now. We got a Top 25 class committed in 2026 and a lot of great players in 2027 we’re recruiting to come here to believe in the vision that we believe in.” Per The Pony Express’ Billy Embody, Lashlee said he would be open with SMU’s administration if there was any personal interest, remarking: “In life, you never say never. You don’t know what the future holds, but our mind is here. Our heart’s here. We’re not worried about speculation outside of what we control. We’re just worried about trying to go win some games in the ACC and continue building what we believe we can build here.” More. (link)

The Georgia Football Classic between Mississippi Valley State and Florida A&M won’t be played at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Oct. 4, per HBCU Gameday’s Steven Gaither, who notes since the announcement of the game, doubts have grown with FAMU staff emphasizing that the Delta Devils held responsibility for the game as a home SWAC contest. New Mexico State makes official its hire of Tulsa Deputy AD/COO Joe Fields as the Aggies’ next AD. NMSU President Valerio Ferme says Fields' experience in enhancing both the academic and personal development of student-athletes made him an appealing choice. "Joe Fields is first and foremost devoted to the overall excellence of our student-athletes. He brings integrity and humility to the role, and his qualifications as a former athlete, leader of athletes and competitor will help shape and lead our Athletics programs into their next chapter. In my conversations with him, he has stressed the need to support our athletes holistically. I know that his focus will be the overall success of our student-athletes, so they are achieving in the classroom as much if not more than they are in the athletics arena." Parker Executive Search assisted with the process. (link)

U.S. Senators Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Cory Booker (D-NJ), and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) have introduced the Student Athlete Fairness and Enforcement (SAFE) Act, which aims "to codify athletes’ rights and protections in law, expand revenue for all schools, support women’s and Olympic sports and bring much-needed stability to the college sports system." The bill’s key provisions include: providing federal NIL rights, replacing patchwork state-by-state laws; establishing health and safety standards for heat exertion, brain injury, asthma; providing five years of post-eligibility medical coverage for sports-related injuries; protecting scholarships, a 10-year guarantee; providing NIL contracts that outline what athletes must do under the contract and how much they'll be paid; requiring agents cap their fees at 5% and to register with a state; allowing students to transfer twice without having to sit out for a year; and allowing students to transfer without having to sit out for a year if their sport is cut or reduced. The bill also proposes to amend the Sports Broadcasting Act (SBA) of 1961 to allow schools to negotiate media rights as a group to increase value without violating antitrust laws. It states schools must use increased media rights revenues to keep the same number of scholarships and roster sports for non-revenue generating and women's sports as provided during 2023-24 academic year. NCAA SVP of External Affairs Tim Buckley: "Those closest to college sports – including student-athletes and leaders of America's colleges and universities at all levels – have consistently called on Congress to take action and address the actual threats facing college athletics. This includes protecting student-athletes from being forced to become employees, and ensuring academic standards and other commonsense rules can be applied consistently. There has never been more momentum in Congress to address these challenges and the NCAA will continue to work with all lawmakers to maximize opportunities for America's 500,000-plus student-athletes." (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger shares more from the SAFE Act, noting that it “would not only amend the SBA, but would create a committee within the NCAA to help pool media rights, maximize revenues and fairly distribute those revenues to assure that schools maintain scholarship and roster levels for women’s and Olympic sports. The SAFE Act also requires broadcast networks make available their football and basketball games on a non-exclusive basis (i.e. no local content behind a paywall). The Act also requires broadcast networks and streaming platforms to reconvey media rights to schools if the entity is not materially using the rights to also broadcast women’s and Olympic sports. (link); Full SAFE Act. (link)

USA Today’s Matt Hayes reports that a person close to the White House indicated to him today that the Democrat-authored SAFE Act aligns more closely with President Trump's vision for college sports. Hayes adds: “It is nearly polar opposite from the (GOP-authored) SCORE bill, which seeks antitrust exemptions from the federal government to make and enforce rules on NIL, player movement and eligibility. Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell also weighs in: “I am encouraged by seeing people stand up against greed, disrespect and disregard for the institution of college athletics and for the student athletes. This is in sharp contrast to the position we have seen taken by the conference commissioners, and from the NCAA as they have lobbied in favor of legislation like the SCORE Act.” (link)

The Football Oversight Committee has modified its recommendation for the single transfer portal window. Instead of a 10-day window from January 2-11, the committee is recommending a 15-day window that would run from January 2-16, according to CBS’ Matt Zenitz, who adds: “This still needs to be approved by the DI Administrative Committee in order to go into place. The DI Administrative Committee meets October 7-8.” (link)

More from MVC Commissioner Jeff Jackson with The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman & Rob Dauster on how the industry has changed over the last 6-12 months: “Calming down isn’t the right word or the right group of words. It’s probably more an understanding of where we’re at as individual institutions and as a conference office. Trying to figure out the best way to manage it. We now have a better understanding of what NIL is. We have a better understanding of the impact of the House settlement. A little bit better understanding of the transfer portal and how we need to react to it. We have a better understanding of how we need to engage our fan bases in understanding the new environment. I think all those things are moving in a direction that everybody’s embracing. So, it’s a little different over the last couple of months where I think, in all candor, you know for that 10-12 month period prior to that, you feel like you’re running around with your hair on fire.” (link)

Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek spoke with the media yesterday about the decision to part ways with Football HC Sam Pittman and said of the buyout plan for Pittman and defensive staff members: “We’ll pay those out over the next three years, most likely from the reserves in the Razorback Foundation, but we have the resources to pay those buyouts. We don’t have any lump sum payments other than Coach Pittman’s retention bonus. Everything else will be paid out over the next three years for him, and the assistant coaches are all roughly a year and a half. But the assistant coaches have a duty to mitigate [search for other jobs] within their contracts as well. That will help bring the value of the buyouts down.” More from Yurachek on the Razorbacks’ financial picture: “I think there's some misinformation out there about how competitive we are going to be moving forward in the NIL space. We've had over $500K of agreements that have gone through the NIL Go system by way of our student-athletes, [at an average of] roughly $15K per agreement. The national average is about $5,800. We have an NIL strategist within our front office. Our team at Learfield is actively soliciting opportunities for our student-athletes to have NIL agreements. We're at full level of the cap from a revenue sharing standpoint. So whoever the next football coach is is going to have the resources from a revenue-sharing percentage and NIL to compete within this conference.” More from Yurachek. (link)

While it’s “unlikely” that the San Francisco Giants will hire Tennessee Baseball HC Tony Vitello to be the club’s new manager, D1Baseball’s Joe Healy argues the prospect isn’t so far-fetched. “For one, Buster Posey is calling the shots in San Francisco, and his affinity for the college game is obvious. He’s also already earned a reputation for being something of an unpredictable operator, chiefly with the way he handled the situation with (Bob) Melvin by firing him mere months after committing to hanging onto him for the 2026 season. If there’s an organization that would take a wild swing like this, it very well might be the Giants.” Furthermore, Healy observes the way the college game has changed over the years has made the college-to-MLB transition more tractable as player recruitment and retention are inextricably linked to NIL and revenue sharing. “Ultimately, that’s not all that different from the way the big leagues work. Players want to play in certain cities more than others, but they mostly want to play for the most money in a place that wants to win.” (link)

Athletes.org received over $3M in loans through Co-Founder Jim Cavale’s for-profit company, Athletes Innovations, over its first two years of operations, according to Sportico’s Daniel Libit, who notes that AO “applied for tax-exempt status in June 2023 and waited nearly two years before receiving formal IRS recognition as a 501(c)(4) in May 2025.” According to AO’s first publicly available tax returns, the organization spent $2.14M in 2024, including $711,251 on employee compensation and benefits (none of which was direct compensation to Cavale); $352,611 on advertising and promotions; $296,303 on information technology; $190,141 on travel; and $102,883 on “other consulting.” Also of note from Libit: "Cavale, a former college baseball player, launched INFLCR, the athlete brand-building platform, in 2016 upon selling his stake in a regional fitness-gym chain. INFLCR worked with around 170 college team clients before being acquired by Teamworks in 2019 for $6 million, according to a merger agreement reviewed by Sportico. Cavale’s share of the deal amounted to roughly $4.1 million." (link)
