Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger shares details regarding compromises made between the power conferences and 10 non-FBS leagues during last week’s commissioner meetings in Chicago. “First, you should know that the 10 non-FBS conferences that formed a coalition, which we’ll call the Coalition of 10, requesting portions of the SCORE Act be amended, are now fully supporting legislation with a letter sent to lawmakers on Monday. That support only came after the compromise reached last week. The compromise is two-fold: (1) The power leagues agreed to amend the voting threshold for any proposal that changes Division I membership standards from a majority to a super majority (roughly 80%). This eases concerns for officials in non-FBS conferences, who expressed concern that the power leagues – which make up 65% of the new NCAA governance structure – could collectively change membership standards after a five-year moratorium on standards ends. (2) The SCORE Act requires all Division I schools to sponsor 16 sports, which is the NCAA FBS minimum. However, those in non-FBS operate under a minimum of 14, and 40 of those schools have fewer than 16 sports. The compromise here is that those non-FBS leagues can operate under the NCAA’s standard of 14.” (link)

New Mexico State officially introduced freshly minted AD Joe Fields, who says he’s already spoken to several Aggies coaches and plans to meet with all of them on Friday. "I will sit down with everybody. I will evaluate everybody. I have no plans to come in and wipe out everybody. Everybody that's good, that absolutely wants to be here, that fits what we need to do moving forward, can stay and have an opportunity to be here for a long time." Fields also remarked that his "first priority is to make sure I'm out and engaged, meeting with the community, meeting with our athletics department staff members to truly get a feel for this place. … We have to sit down and make sure that we have a list of our priorities, and we need to make sure we prioritize our priorities the right way. I've been really engaged at Tulsa...and we did a lot of creative things and got out into communities, donors, corporate sponsors and new events. … There's no such thing as a bad idea. We have to do things differently and creatively." (link)

CAA Commissioner Joe D’Antonio joins The Field of 68 during the league’s men’s and women’s basketball media day. On men’s hoops, D’Antonio addresses the wave of eligibility cases, saying: “This is just one person’s opinion. I think the answer to this question lies within the waiver process. I think the NCAA needs to get out of the waiver business. And we also need the support of the federal government so that the NCAA can be a self-governing organization. It can govern itself. And once we can get back to that point, if you’re able to draw a line in the sand that says, ‘Okay, you have five years of eligibility but within a certain period of time. Is it six years to play five, whatever it might be? But we have to get out of the waiver business. That is what, in my opinion, is causing the biggest problems around years of eligibility.” (link)

More from SoCon Commissioner Michael Cross during his visit with The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman. On potential NCAA Tournament expansion and if he’s concerned mid-majors could eventually be left out: “I have a quote in my office that says ‘the more prosperous a sport becomes, the more likely it is to destroy the reasons for its prosperity.’ That’s what we’re facing right now in college basketball. We’ve got an incredible level of prosperity in the sport. The March Madness tournament is an absolute icon and cultural phenomenon on the calendar incorporating the month of March and early April. The challenge that you’ve got is the debate around do we pursue more money or do we continue to hold true to the ideals and the feel and the culture that surrounds what we’re doing. Let’s use The Masters as a parallel example. There’s no question The Masters could go out and Augusta National could go out and just monetize the heck out of that championship and they make a conscious choice to not do it because they value other things over trying to maximize and wring out every penny from that experience. I think the same principle has to apply here, and you’ve got to think about the broader ecosystem. You can’t have structures in place from an analytic standpoint, from a selection standpoint that create a really unfortunate set of circumstances. You’ve got to think about the big picture.” (link)

Texas Tech last month responded to an open-records request from the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams, who asked for a breakdown of the number of football players on one-year, two-year, three-year, and four-year or longer NIL revenue-sharing contracts. According to the Red Raiders, 97 student-athletes are on one-year agreements and none are on three-year, four-year, or longer deals. Tech declined to disclose the number of players on two-year contracts, citing FERPA, but Football HC Joey McGuire this week remarked: "I think we have maybe seven or eight guys that are on multiyears, and then we have probably another X amount that we're working to add another year to their contract." McGuire also said he would identify the players on multiyear deals once he had a complete list rather than provide incomplete information off the top of his head. A Tech official subsequently said identifying those players is not allowed, per Williams. (link)

Cal State Bakersfield continues dealing with the fallout after Men’s Basketball AC Kevin Mays was arrested September 8 and faces an array of felony charges. Mays has since been terminated from CSUB, jailed, and is due in court October 29. Meanwhile, the shockwaves hit Roadrunners’ softball team, where HC Letty Olivarez and AC James Davenport (Olivarez’s husband) were placed on paid leave March 25 after student-athlete Violet Salazar posted viral TikToks accusing Davenport of sexual assault and Olivarez of verbal abuse. Davenport denies the claims; Salazar deleted the videos and transferred to Hampton. A university probe did not result in either coach’s termination; however, Davenport’s contract lapsed May 31, while Olivarez remains on paid leave. According to Sports Illustrated’s Maren Angus-Coombs, parents of 18 of 21 players urged immediate reinstatement, saying administrators discounted player testimonies contradicting Salazar. Multiple players and parents allege Mays and Salazar had an ongoing relationship and claim the softball probe deflected attention from their conduct. Lots more. (link)

Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders expresses frustration over filing injury reports, explaining that “I hate that we have to fill it out so people can bet on our games. But you’ve got some guys being banged up, they’ll be back here or there, but you have to put them on the list. A lot of them are going to play, some of them are not going to play for certain. But you never compare, because you don’t know how important that guy is on their team, or how important this guy is on our team.” The Buffs’ Week 6 injury report included 27 players, and Coach Prime adds: “We’re honest because, with me, if it’s not right, they’re going to hang us and crucify us. … But we’re forthright with that.” (link)

The conference center at Kansas’ David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium is slated to officially open on October 25 when the Jayhawks take on Kansas State. KU Chancellor Douglas Girod: “We will have the governor and a significant portion of the legislature in the house for that game, as we play the Governor’s Cup. That will be a great opportunity to showcase that, and just as a reminder for this group, the state through federal COVID dollars deployed in an economic development fashion has about $85M dollars invested in the conference center — which costs actually more than the $85M, but that was a big chunk of the way to get that project going.” Girod also noted the facility is large enough to seat 1,000 people for dinner or 2,500 people for a theater-seating environment. It can also be adjusted depending on the event and shares facilities with the football complex itself that aid in that variability. (link)

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in remarks at the Leaders in Sport conference this week reiterated the NFL’s intention to launch a flag football league before the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles: “We’re committed to creating a women’s professional league and a men’s professional flag league. We’ve had a great deal of interest in that, and I expect that we’ll be able to do that, launch that, in the next couple of years.” Puck’s John Ourand notes Goodell made his comments “just a couple of days before the Vikings play the Browns at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The NFL, of course, pushed for the Olympics to include flag football in 2028, and Goodell talked about how the sport’s popularity among younger kids gives him confidence that these leagues will succeed.” Goodell: “If you set that structure up where there’s youth leagues, going into high school, into college, and then professional, you can develop a system of scale. That’s an important infrastructure that we need to create.” (link)

NBC and YouTube TV have agreed to a long-term carriage agreement that will avoid blackouts of popular live sports programming by keeping NBCUniversal on the popular pay TV platform. Negotiations centered around the issue of “ingestion,” with YouTube TV seeking to negotiate the ability to “ingest” NBC-owned content into its platform. Awful Announcing’s Drew Lerner notes that critically, NBC seems to have given in on this point with NBCUniversal Distribution Executive Matt Schnaars remarking: “We’ve secured long-term access to our full portfolio of broadcast and cable networks on YouTube TV, and we’re advancing our Peacock strategy with an upcoming launch on YouTube Primetime Channels and ongoing presence on Google TV.” In addition to announcing a new distribution agreement, NBC also revealed it will re-launch NBC Sports Network this fall with the channel likely utilized to carry some of Peacock’s exclusive live sports programming. NCAA Basketball Tournament expansion is moving closer to a reality, reports Ross Dellenger for On3. With potential to begin for the 2026-27 event, “eight games are expected to be added to the current ‘First Four’ played over Tuesday and Wednesday of the first week of the event.” It won’t be called the “First Twelve,” however, as one high-placed executive tells Dellenger: “We’ll call it the opening round.” The new opening round will feature “24 teams playing in 12 games over the two days, with six games each at two sites (Dayton, the current home of the First Four, plus another likely more basketball-centric Western location). Those involved in the negotiations caution that plenty of this could change through the course of continuing talks with TV partners Warner Bros. Discovery and CBS. [...] Why 12 games? The entire goal is to keep the first round of the tournament at 64 teams. [...] In the opening round, the split is expected to remain the same: 12 lower-seeded automatic qualifiers and 12 at-large selections meeting one another. However, that could always change during the course of negotiations. Under this 12-and-12 plan, eight additional teams would be extracted from the main bracket, plus the eight new at-large selections derived from expansion. Basically, eight more at-large teams, previously secure in the first-round field, are now having to play an extra, play-in type game to reach the weekend tournament.” More. (link)

SBJ’s Ben Portnoy: “Student Athlete NIL, which at one point worked with more than 40 schools, including a number of Power Four institutions such as Georgia Tech, Rutgers, Syracuse, Oklahoma and Wake Forest, alerted clients in recent days that it is shutting down operations.” SANIL was founded by Jason Belzer in 2021. Early in 2025, Blueprint Sports announced its acquisition of SANIL. (link); Belzer, who had previously departed the C-suite for an advisory role with the company, fully exited in January of this year to pursue other opportunities. Belzer remained a shareholder of SANIL & was succeeded as CEO by Chris Brown. More Portnoy: “SBJ first reported it (SANIL) was set to be acquired by Blueprint Sports and the companies were slated to boast a portfolio of more than 70 NIL collectives and create a wide-ranging, nationwide footprint.” (link); At that time, Brown, listed on the Blueprint’s website as the “former SANIL CEO and newly appointed COO for Blueprint Sports” stated, “This acquisition merges both companies’ proven NIL and data solutions to create the most advanced technology and services platform in collegiate sports.” What happened in the months that followed is unknown, as the merger was never finalized. Blueprint Sports CEO Rob Sine to Portnoy on today’s news: “Earlier this year, Blueprint Sports entered into a Letter of Intent with SANIL; however, the deal did not move forward. We remain focused on leading the next chapter of NIL by delivering innovative fan monetization solutions that connect student-athletes with their communities. Above all, our priority is driving meaningful NIL revenue for athletes.” (link)

Yahoo Sports’ Dan Wolken explores how the mindset has shifted from “SEC doormat to darling” within the Vanderbilt athletics department, observing “the inferiority complex of being the SEC’s doormat was so profoundly woven into everyday life here that Vanderbilt’s coaches would often find themselves recruiting against disparaging comments made about the program by guides giving campus tours — which often included prospective football players.” Commodores Chancellor Daniel Diermeier: “We had to be crystal clear that we had to stop looking over our shoulder and comparing ourselves with other universities. We can pay attention to what the Ivies are doing, but at the end of the day, we need to do what is consistent with who we are and a key component of our identity is that we do everything from Bach to baseball. We have no tolerance for mediocrity anywhere.” AD Candice Lee: “There’s a change internally with how we are carrying ourselves and being unapologetic about it.” More. (link)

Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger observes this weekend’s match-up against No. 4 Miami (FL) is “a critical game in a pivotal season for Florida State football,” especially after last week’s upset loss to Virginia, because “no place is in more of a win-now mode than Florida State. No school has invested so much in the recent past.” With two overlapping stadium projects, consisting of Doak Campbell Stadium renovations and a new football-only building approaching a $400M tab, as well as an overhauled roster and coaching staff resulting from last season’s two-win campaign, that came with a reported price tag near $40M, FSU’s “financial tab creeps toward a half-billion dollars.” Noles AD Michael Alford: “My job is to provide the resources to be successful. Coming out of the House settlement, everybody else stopped building facilities. I went ‘Hell no, guys. We’ve got to go pedal to the metal!’ When you have a depression, you gain market share. You double down.” Dellenger continues: “In a comment that speaks to the importance of home game ticket sales, one person close to the program said, ‘That stadium has to be a money-printing machine for the athletic department.’ It’s important to win enough games in order to fill the stadium and generate more money to … win more games.” More. “Innovative leadership, increased institutional investment and a set of coaches that will be mentioned for every big job that opens up this coaching cycle” have been behind the American’s early 2025 success in college football, writes CBS Sports’ John Talty who observes that Commissioner Tim Pernetti “has been aggressive about positioning the American as an innovative conference willing to take some chances to stand out from the rest of college athletics.” Tulane AD David Harris: “I've been really impressed at his ability to kind of put everything on the table and allow us a chance to be able to really look at it, to understand it, to explore it, to talk with our presidents, to have all of us know that we want to turn over every rock possible and to find a way to improve the individual schools.” Pernetti: “You can't spend a lot of time playing defense. You have to spend time creating new resources and generating new revenue and creating a higher level of competition in your league because you want to make it a place that people want to stay and that others want to come to. And, by the way, people are staying and we have a lot of encouraging conversations with people outside the conference. My job is to create more value however I can.” More. (link)

Duke extends Men’s Basketball HC Jon Scheyer through the 2030-31 season, reports ESPN’s Jeff Borzello and Pete Thamel, who note the extension adds two years to a deal that previously ran through 2028-29. Duke AD Nina King: “Jon's remarkable impact over his first three seasons has positioned Duke Basketball for sustained excellence, and we are proud to ensure his leadership well into the future. He has delivered championships and national prominence, and he continues to lead a program built on character, connection and a relentless pursuit of greatness. Jon's vision for Duke Basketball aligns perfectly with our highest aspirations, and we couldn't be more excited for the future of this program under his leadership. (link)

New Mexico is launching a feasibility study, through an architecture joint venture of Gensler and Dekker, looking at modernizing University Stadium and developing its south campus into a mixed-use economic development district. The study will “assess University Stadium’s condition and review the venue’s fan experience, game-day experience basics (restrooms and concessions, for example), premium amenities and revenue generation capabilities. That will result in a new design that supports more year-round use, including for community gatherings, high school state championships and other statewide events. Construction estimates and renderings will provide the university with phasing options, in addition to a mixed-use development analysis of the South Campus Tax Increment Development District (TIDD). [...] UNM expects the full feasibility work to take between six and 12 months, with stadium findings available in early 2026.” (link)

Even more from Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, who highlights new rules announced last month and approved this week by the Division I Board of Directors, including that schools can no longer guarantee a student-athlete any third-party NIL deal money verbally or in writing and that all collective or booster deals must include a specific direct activation. Dellenger adds: “A third rule - requiring the reporting of deals by high school enrollees - is also in this batch. Rules must be posted for 30 days before formal adoption.” (link)
