SBJ’s Ben Portnoy reached out to nearly two dozen ADs from nine conferences in an attempt to gain a better understanding of their experiences with the College Sports Commission. Overall, 15 agreed to participate on the condition of anonymity to speak candidly. On how effective the CSC has been in its early days, one Group of 5 AD remarked: “It’s not [CSC CEO] Bryan Seeley’s fault. He was set up to fail from the start with timing, lack of authority.” On if the CSC is working effectively, a Power 4 AD commented: “No, not yet. Fully anticipate it will, otherwise [we’re] not paying for services not rendered. [There was] a lot of initial buildout cost. Results need to happen. It’s still in the process of being built out. An investigative team needs to be fully operational immediately … If you are going to cheat, now is the time.” On the biggest concerns related to the CSC, one Group of 5 AD said: “If they can’t enforce the cap, they’re useless, which will further complicate things as we don’t know what we’re supposed to pay for anyway, or what amounts.” Another Power 4 AD added: “The sooner we can get to some kind of transparency on what’s real and what isn’t real, the better. … We’re still operating in this twilight zone of fantasy land where agents are pretending like nothing has changed, which is causing assistant coaches to assume nothing has changed, which is causing some real anxiety and uncertainty. The sooner we can resolve that the better.” Much more. (link)

Virginia Tech announces the eight-member search committee that will begin work immediately to identify the Hokies’ next Football HC. Included are former Super Bowl-winning HC Bruce Arians, Ryan Berman Advisory Managing Partner Bridget Ryan Berman, former KPMG Chairman/CEO Lynne Doughtie, former VT Football Assoc. HC Bud Foster, Air Control Concepts President/CEO Brad Hobbs, former Under Secretary of the U.S. Army/Virginia Tech Board of Visitors member Ryan McCarthy, Vehicle Accessory Founder/Board of Visitors member J. Pearson and former NFL pro/current ACC Network studio & in-game analyst Eddie Royal. (link)

Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock corrects former Arizona Cardinals/Tampa Bay Buccaneers HC Bruce Arians’ recent comments that the Hokies would hire a GM before hiring a Football HC, noting there were discussions about doing so, but “if we put a GM in place that our next head coach has no relation with, it could severely limit our head coach candidate pool. And we certainly don’t want that. The head coach will come first and will have input into the whole front office and hires.” Regarding the program’s new setup overall, Babcock says it will “look like an NFL model. Though Babcock didn’t say exactly how that would work, noting that the Hokies are considering several college models, he mentioned Ole Miss, where Lane Kiffin is the head coach who hired a general manager in Billy Glasscock to be a pairing that’s “50-50 equals.” Regarding his future in Blacksburg, Babcock explains: “I work at the pleasure of the Board and the President, and my role continues to be being the AD. I want to help this search committee in any way I can and same for the next head coach, get him up and running and succeeding. My role will also include helping lay the infrastructure and groundwork on this new budget investment and the step-by-step Invest To Win plan. The AD role is always to continue to help the university navigate the new and ever-changing landscape of college athletics.” (link)

A group of nearly a dozen high-level UCLA donors has reached out to the Los Angeles Times alleging a “pattern of rampant dysfunction inside the athletic department that goes well beyond the surprise hiring and speedy dismissal of football coach DeShaun Foster.” Per Ben Bolch, the donors “also questioned [AD Martin] Jarmond’s [NIL] strategy, high spending despite years of running up massive athletic department deficits and failure to fire coach Chip Kelly amid subpar results.” Men’s Basketball season-ticket holder Jim Bendat offers some balance: “I have some sympathy for Jarmond. Money had to be an issue when he arguably should have fired Kelly immediately after the ‘23 season. Then the timing of Kelly’s departure put Jarmond in a nearly impossible situation. Basketball, baseball, softball and Olympic sports are doing fine. Is it fair to give credit for those successes only to the coaches and players, but blame only Jarmond for football failures? I don’t think that’s fair at all. Because football is the cash cow, that’s the big focus. I say give this AD another chance to get this right. It will be the biggest hire he will ever make, and he has to get it right this time.” More. (link)

Butler AD Grant Leiendecker visits with IBJ Media’s Dave Neff on Talent Scout to offer his insight on how the AD role is changing with the introduction of revenue sharing & NIL and why resource generation is his top priority. Leiendecker: “You mentioned the word adaptability. I think that’s critical to anyone’s success in this role these days. I’m still learning, how do I need to structure my team? How do I need to manage my time? Where am I best suited to serve Butler University? The reality is that’s got to be resource acquisition for the most part. That’s our biggest opportunity. With NIL, I believe we have an unbelievable product to sell. When you think about the power of our institution, the academic strength, the city we’re in. … The reality is though, the number one reason that you’re able to attract and retain talent is your NIL compensation. That’s significant. As a smaller alumni base, historically, it’s been you’ve got to go raise the money through donors. There’s still a little bit of that now for us. So, that’s where I’m spending a lot of my time on how we modernize our revenue generation both through corporate entities, through ticket sales and then the outside fundraising piece.” More from Leiendecker. The partnership also includes an Institute-wide partnership to advance Georgia Tech’s and Under Armour’s shared commitment to innovation. In his comments, Tech AD Ryan Alpert specifically points to “innovative NIL opportunities.” LEONA assisted in facilitating the partnership. (link); ESPN’s Pete Thamel indicates it’s a 10-year pact between the two, plus: “The deal is expected to be nearly six-times more than the average annual amount that GTech is getting from [its] current adidas deal.” (link); Check out the hype video announcing the partnership. The Professional Bull Riders (PBR) are bringing their show to Florida State’s Doak Campbell Stadium over March 13-14, 2026, as part of their “Unleash the Beast" series, with bull riding and a major music act concert slated to be held each night. Noles AD Michael Alford wants to transform Doak into a year-round revenue stream, remarking: “I've always said January to April is going to be dirt season at Doak. We want to do as many events and get as many people in this community as possible.” Overall, the PBR will haul in 5.5M pounds of dirt to cover roughly 30K square feet along with additional sound, video and lighting to cover Bobby Bowden Field in a production more than three times the size of a traditional elite tour event. The latest edition of CRO.ticker hit inboxes this morning. If you missed it, Revenue Brew’s Layla Ilchi examines the maturation of the CRO role and why those who hold the positions have shorter tenures than their C-suite peers. This issue also includes a look at TikTok’s ascension as an R&D lab and a checkout lane for F&B brands, the Indianapolis Colts’ implementation of Dormakaba Alvarado UltraQ Pedestals at entry points and more. There’s also this from Spotify Co-Founder/CEO Daniel Ek on balancing personal taste and data-driven analysis when making product decisions: “Sooner or later what ends up happening is you get into the space where you don’t even know anymore because your current feedback loop of where the world is and the customer you're designing for starts becoming a little bit different. And then you need to get to a point where you start incorporating some feedback mechanism. So, for me, taste is sort of judgment plus curiosity. … It’s really a question for me of allowing as much feedback as humanly possible so you can get yourself or your small team to some level of taste.” Not subscribed yet? The Big Ten, Big Ten Network and Allstate announce the creation of the AllState Big Ten Women’s Championship Series to spotlight and celebrate excellence in women’s athletics across the league. The new year-long competition is part of a multi-year collaboration establishing Allstate as the Official Insurance Partner of the Big Ten Conference with schools earning points based on their teams’ performance in regular and postseason play. At the end of the academic year, the school with the highest point total will be recognized as the overall champion. In addition, Allstate will become the title sponsor of the Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament, present all 12 Big Ten Women’s Olympic Sports championships and tournaments, including soccer, gymnastics and softball, and sponsor On The Pitch, BTN’s new series spotlighting women’s soccer stories across the conference. San Diego State has released three new secondary logos, Ocelotl (jaguar), Calli (house), and Ehecatl (wind), marking the result of a six-year project to identify iconography that is historically reflective of the Aztecs’ culture while aligning with the school’s pillar values. Per The San Diego Union-Tribune’s Mark Zeigler, “there are scarlet and black versions that sports teams will likely use as secondary marks, appearing on the neckline of a uniform or perhaps on practice shirts. There are also full-color variants with different shades of teal plus a yellow called ‘golden’ that the university, which recognizes teal as an official color in addition to scarlet and black, will use.” AD John David Wicker: “Part of us wanting to do this has been this notion that, ‘They took the Warrior away, now they’re going to take the Aztecs name next.’ This reinforces that we’re not. We’re the Aztecs. President (Adela) de la Torre has leaned into that. It’s who we are. Teams within athletics can determine which of them they want to use. I don’t envision it being a primary mark on the front of a uniform, like, for example, the duck at Oregon. I don’t anticipate that, but maybe things will change in the future.” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger shares details regarding compromises made between the power conferences and 10 non-FBS leagues during last week’s commissioner meetings in Chicago. “First, you should know that the 10 non-FBS conferences that formed a coalition, which we’ll call the Coalition of 10, requesting portions of the SCORE Act be amended, are now fully supporting legislation with a letter sent to lawmakers on Monday. That support only came after the compromise reached last week. The compromise is two-fold: (1) The power leagues agreed to amend the voting threshold for any proposal that changes Division I membership standards from a majority to a super majority (roughly 80%). This eases concerns for officials in non-FBS conferences, who expressed concern that the power leagues – which make up 65% of the new NCAA governance structure – could collectively change membership standards after a five-year moratorium on standards ends. (2) The SCORE Act requires all Division I schools to sponsor 16 sports, which is the NCAA FBS minimum. However, those in non-FBS operate under a minimum of 14, and 40 of those schools have fewer than 16 sports. The compromise here is that those non-FBS leagues can operate under the NCAA’s standard of 14.” (link)

New Mexico State officially introduced freshly minted AD Joe Fields, who says he’s already spoken to several Aggies coaches and plans to meet with all of them on Friday. "I will sit down with everybody. I will evaluate everybody. I have no plans to come in and wipe out everybody. Everybody that's good, that absolutely wants to be here, that fits what we need to do moving forward, can stay and have an opportunity to be here for a long time." Fields also remarked that his "first priority is to make sure I'm out and engaged, meeting with the community, meeting with our athletics department staff members to truly get a feel for this place. … We have to sit down and make sure that we have a list of our priorities, and we need to make sure we prioritize our priorities the right way. I've been really engaged at Tulsa...and we did a lot of creative things and got out into communities, donors, corporate sponsors and new events. … There's no such thing as a bad idea. We have to do things differently and creatively." (link)

CAA Commissioner Joe D’Antonio joins The Field of 68 during the league’s men’s and women’s basketball media day. On men’s hoops, D’Antonio addresses the wave of eligibility cases, saying: “This is just one person’s opinion. I think the answer to this question lies within the waiver process. I think the NCAA needs to get out of the waiver business. And we also need the support of the federal government so that the NCAA can be a self-governing organization. It can govern itself. And once we can get back to that point, if you’re able to draw a line in the sand that says, ‘Okay, you have five years of eligibility but within a certain period of time. Is it six years to play five, whatever it might be? But we have to get out of the waiver business. That is what, in my opinion, is causing the biggest problems around years of eligibility.” (link)

More from SoCon Commissioner Michael Cross during his visit with The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman. On potential NCAA Tournament expansion and if he’s concerned mid-majors could eventually be left out: “I have a quote in my office that says ‘the more prosperous a sport becomes, the more likely it is to destroy the reasons for its prosperity.’ That’s what we’re facing right now in college basketball. We’ve got an incredible level of prosperity in the sport. The March Madness tournament is an absolute icon and cultural phenomenon on the calendar incorporating the month of March and early April. The challenge that you’ve got is the debate around do we pursue more money or do we continue to hold true to the ideals and the feel and the culture that surrounds what we’re doing. Let’s use The Masters as a parallel example. There’s no question The Masters could go out and Augusta National could go out and just monetize the heck out of that championship and they make a conscious choice to not do it because they value other things over trying to maximize and wring out every penny from that experience. I think the same principle has to apply here, and you’ve got to think about the broader ecosystem. You can’t have structures in place from an analytic standpoint, from a selection standpoint that create a really unfortunate set of circumstances. You’ve got to think about the big picture.” (link)

Texas Tech last month responded to an open-records request from the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams, who asked for a breakdown of the number of football players on one-year, two-year, three-year, and four-year or longer NIL revenue-sharing contracts. According to the Red Raiders, 97 student-athletes are on one-year agreements and none are on three-year, four-year, or longer deals. Tech declined to disclose the number of players on two-year contracts, citing FERPA, but Football HC Joey McGuire this week remarked: "I think we have maybe seven or eight guys that are on multiyears, and then we have probably another X amount that we're working to add another year to their contract." McGuire also said he would identify the players on multiyear deals once he had a complete list rather than provide incomplete information off the top of his head. A Tech official subsequently said identifying those players is not allowed, per Williams. (link)

Cal State Bakersfield continues dealing with the fallout after Men’s Basketball AC Kevin Mays was arrested September 8 and faces an array of felony charges. Mays has since been terminated from CSUB, jailed, and is due in court October 29. Meanwhile, the shockwaves hit Roadrunners’ softball team, where HC Letty Olivarez and AC James Davenport (Olivarez’s husband) were placed on paid leave March 25 after student-athlete Violet Salazar posted viral TikToks accusing Davenport of sexual assault and Olivarez of verbal abuse. Davenport denies the claims; Salazar deleted the videos and transferred to Hampton. A university probe did not result in either coach’s termination; however, Davenport’s contract lapsed May 31, while Olivarez remains on paid leave. According to Sports Illustrated’s Maren Angus-Coombs, parents of 18 of 21 players urged immediate reinstatement, saying administrators discounted player testimonies contradicting Salazar. Multiple players and parents allege Mays and Salazar had an ongoing relationship and claim the softball probe deflected attention from their conduct. Lots more. (link)

Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders expresses frustration over filing injury reports, explaining that “I hate that we have to fill it out so people can bet on our games. But you’ve got some guys being banged up, they’ll be back here or there, but you have to put them on the list. A lot of them are going to play, some of them are not going to play for certain. But you never compare, because you don’t know how important that guy is on their team, or how important this guy is on our team.” The Buffs’ Week 6 injury report included 27 players, and Coach Prime adds: “We’re honest because, with me, if it’s not right, they’re going to hang us and crucify us. … But we’re forthright with that.” (link)

The conference center at Kansas’ David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium is slated to officially open on October 25 when the Jayhawks take on Kansas State. KU Chancellor Douglas Girod: “We will have the governor and a significant portion of the legislature in the house for that game, as we play the Governor’s Cup. That will be a great opportunity to showcase that, and just as a reminder for this group, the state through federal COVID dollars deployed in an economic development fashion has about $85M dollars invested in the conference center — which costs actually more than the $85M, but that was a big chunk of the way to get that project going.” Girod also noted the facility is large enough to seat 1,000 people for dinner or 2,500 people for a theater-seating environment. It can also be adjusted depending on the event and shares facilities with the football complex itself that aid in that variability. (link)

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in remarks at the Leaders in Sport conference this week reiterated the NFL’s intention to launch a flag football league before the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles: “We’re committed to creating a women’s professional league and a men’s professional flag league. We’ve had a great deal of interest in that, and I expect that we’ll be able to do that, launch that, in the next couple of years.” Puck’s John Ourand notes Goodell made his comments “just a couple of days before the Vikings play the Browns at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The NFL, of course, pushed for the Olympics to include flag football in 2028, and Goodell talked about how the sport’s popularity among younger kids gives him confidence that these leagues will succeed.” Goodell: “If you set that structure up where there’s youth leagues, going into high school, into college, and then professional, you can develop a system of scale. That’s an important infrastructure that we need to create.” (link)

NBC and YouTube TV have agreed to a long-term carriage agreement that will avoid blackouts of popular live sports programming by keeping NBCUniversal on the popular pay TV platform. Negotiations centered around the issue of “ingestion,” with YouTube TV seeking to negotiate the ability to “ingest” NBC-owned content into its platform. Awful Announcing’s Drew Lerner notes that critically, NBC seems to have given in on this point with NBCUniversal Distribution Executive Matt Schnaars remarking: “We’ve secured long-term access to our full portfolio of broadcast and cable networks on YouTube TV, and we’re advancing our Peacock strategy with an upcoming launch on YouTube Primetime Channels and ongoing presence on Google TV.” In addition to announcing a new distribution agreement, NBC also revealed it will re-launch NBC Sports Network this fall with the channel likely utilized to carry some of Peacock’s exclusive live sports programming.
