Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger with an interesting update last night on the new ad produced by Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell pushing for a reform of the Sports Broadcasting Act that was set to run across the industry during games today: “College football’s national broadcast and cable partners have decided against airing this advertisement, those with knowledge of the decision say.” (link)

Navigate Founder AJ Maestas and VP of Consulting Charles Rolston sit down to discuss the Big Ten’s potential $2B private equity deal, and Maestas points out that this is a “great time of disruption. Never waste a crisis. What an opportunity to basically invest your way into the future given some significant costs these universities are facing. On the downside, I would say that's probably one of the motivators, right? They are scared. How are they going to meet this House vs. NCAA settlement among all the other things that are going on? And that's where I'm concerned is that this is a grab for cash because we need it today. Will we later regret it and say, ‘Well, we just issued a secondary equity offering when our stock was trading low.’ Right? Because the ultimate question is, are you going to make better use of those dollars in your hands today for long-term investments or are you better off in waiting?” Maestas predicts the deal ultimately won’t go through because of the outsized value Michigan and Ohio State bring to the league. For instance, Maestas notes: “Ohio State’s probably worth about four times what they get from Big Ten distribution.” Rolston disagrees and explains: “I think that Ohio State and Michigan are ultimately fence-sitting so that they can optimize the terms possible and they know that there's enough support for this to go through and if they try to fight it, it will be a political nightmare and a headache.” Full podcast. The Athletic’s Ralph Russo and Scott Dochterman also take a deeper look into the Big Ten’s possible PE pact and are told by Herrick Feinstein Sports Law Group co-Chair Irwin Kishner that “when you deal with publicly chartered universities, you do need to deal with the local state law that chartered the school. You can’t be perceived as selling an asset of the state. So, these things are things that you need to take into consideration when you’re investing into public universities.” Russo and Dochterman subsequently note the “workaround is to go through the Big Ten, which is considered a nonprofit organization. (Commissioner) Petitti and other Big Ten officials believe their conference and its assets are undervalued, a stance with which Kishner agreed. The danger is, if the Big Ten uses a subsidiary and cannot meet its financial obligations, an outside entity will control those assets. But there’s little fear the Big Ten won’t continue to grow financially and make this arrangement lucrative for everyone involved – provided Ohio State and Michigan remain part of it. [...] What Petitti is trying to pitch to all his members, but especially to the ones at the top of the food chain, is that everything you want athletically, academically and financially you can have under the umbrella of the Big Ten.” (link)
|
Sports Illustrated’s Bryan Fischer on the same topic: “Industry and conference sources tell Sports Illustrated the Big Ten’s talks have centered around three of the biggest private equity firms in the country - Apollo Global Management, Sixth Street Partners and Ares Management - and that a decision on moving forward with a potential deal could happen before the end of October. Many of the finer details are still being finalized, and there remains a lack of full unanimity among all schools in the Big Ten over whether to ultimately proceed with the new venture.” (link)

With college football just over a month away from the “weekly outrage ritual” of releasing the College Football Playoff rankings, Yahoo’s Dan Wolken suggests some of that outrage could be mitigated by taking a look at how college hockey seeds its postseason. “Though the formula has evolved over the years and is still evolving — more on that in a moment — the gist of it was to take the three factors the committee was supposed to consider and measure every team in the country by comparing them with every other team. All the selection committee does after the conference tournaments is plug in the six automatic bid winners and then take the 10 highest-rated teams from the formula to plug into the bracket. Sometimes there are necessary small seeding tweaks to deal with geography issues, but the committee has zero discretion when it comes to team selection. No mess, no controversy, no complaints.” Harvard Senior Assoc. AD/Men’s Ice Hockey Committee Chair Tim Troville tells Wolken it “certainly takes a lot of the pressure off. We like to be really open and transparent. Mathematically you’re in, or mathematically you’re out. It’s been really good for hockey.” This year, college hockey’s PairWise rankings are being replaced with the NCAA Power Index (NPI) in response to issues that have accumulated over the years, and while Troville notes the new formula will reward greater strength of schedule, he says other tweaks will be marginal, such as a slight decrease in the numerical value of an overtime win. Meanwhile, Wolken points out that “perhaps the best part is that fans (and coaching staffs) can play with the numbers online and know exactly how certain wins and losses will impact their team’s chances of getting in. For bubble teams, that means a lot of clicking the refresh button toward the end of the season and at the conference tournaments.” More. (link)

The Northeast Conference will retire the use of its full name and rebrand to simply “NEC.” Commissioner Noreen Morris: “The NEC’s transformation is fueled by the league’s long-standing foundation of passion, heart and perseverance. This refresh honors our history and strengthens the league’s identity in this ever-evolving college athletics landscape.” (link)

Sacramento State President Luke Wood during an appearance on the Montana-centric GrizFanPod: “We will be playing 2026 in the FBS, no matter what. In November, we’ll announce exactly what we’re doing, but if you were to ask me today, I’m pretty confident we’ll be announcing that we’re part of a new FBS conference.” (link)

The Reno-Sparks Convention & Visitors Authority announced a new NIL deal with Nevada, whereby Reno Tahoe will spend $242,500 on NIL deals “in an attempt to leverage the fame of top Wolf Pack athletes to promote tourism in Northern Nevada.” The RSCVA also has successfully submitted bids to host NCAA Regionals in cross country and men's golf in the last year and will attempt to bring NCAA Tournament basketball games to the region following the construction of the $435M arena at the Grand Sierra Resort, which held its ceremonial groundbreaking this week with an expected completion date in summer 2027. College Football TV viewership is up double digits thus far in 2025, reports Front Office Sports’ Eric Fisher, who notes Nielsen data shows the sport has grown 10.5% from 1.9M viewers per game over the first five weeks of last season to 2.1M over this year’s comparable period. Other highlights include a 15% lift in viewership among those aged 18 to 34 and six games that have reached an audience of 10M+. Last season at the time, only one game had achieved that mark. For all of 2025 to date, sports content has accounted for 22% of broadcast and cable viewing time among adults ages 25 to 54, despite that content representing 15% of the programming. Last year, including the Paris Olympics, the sports consumption figure was 19%. Nielsen SVP for Product Strategy & Thought Leadership Brian Fuhrer: “With everything else going on, people are definitely looking for that escape from live sports, and college football certainly has been a big part of that.” More. One year after Cal hosted ESPN College GameDay, The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner breaks down how the Bears are still benefiting. “On a practical level, it laid a vital footprint. The Bears have turned Memorial Glade into a gathering spot on game days. Oski’s Village, as the fan fest is called, features entertainment, food, drink and various levels of hospitality.” Chancellor Rich Lyons adds: “There was no center of gravity, and they created it. Most people associate that with Ground Zero for GameDay.” That morning also helped convince Ron Rivera to come aboard as GM, as he explains to Wilner: “It shows what our potential is. I had a great time and felt the energy, and it’s still there. People appreciate that we have gained momentum. Now, we need to follow through.” The Bears also recently announced a record fundraising haul of $82M for FY25, and Lyons notes: “It’s not 100% causal, but we began the last academic year with zero sports fully endowed, and it ended with five sports fully endowed. And we set an ambitious goal to do three more in each of the next three years. That’s 14, almost half of our varsity sports. I’m not saying GameDay triggered all of that, but a lot of people felt like Berkeley sees the value and importance of athletics, including for advancing its academic mission as a public research institution.” (link)

The ACC’s new on-air replay-audio experiment took center stage during Virginia’s upset of Florida State last week, a game that drew an average of 4.4M viewers. The Virginian-Pilot’s David Teel notes that six plays went to review, including FSU’s would-be TD in the second overtime, after which viewers heard the booth walk through slow-mo angles as they discussed what they were seeing. ACC Senior Assoc. Commissioner for Football Michael Strickland tells Teel: “We’ve been extraordinarily pleased with how this experiment has gone through five weeks of the season. It was important to us that this access experiment not interfere in any way with the replay officials doing their job. As we know, all of those folks are human, and so there will always be errors. However, the errors that have occurred this year (on replay) we do not attribute in any way to enhanced access. In fact, any errors that we’ve had occurred in games where there wasn’t enhanced access. … This access shows that they’re human, it shows that they’re prepared, it shows that there’s nothing untoward occurring. It’s just four people who love football and are trying to contribute to the game in as fair and successful a manner as they are humanly capable of doing.” More from Teel. (link)

According to a recent Pew Research Survey, 43% of U.S. adults believe the fact sports betting is now legal in much of the country is a bad thing for society with the Pew Research Center’s John Gramlich noting that number is up from 34% in 2022, while 40% of adults believe it’s also a bad thing for sports, up from 33%. In addition, many Americans continue to say it has neither a bad nor good impact on society and on sports, while fewer than one-in-five see any positive impact. Gramlich continues: “22% of adults say they’ve personally bet money on sports in the past year. That’s a slight uptick from 19% three years ago. [...] Some of the biggest shifts in attitudes about sports betting’s societal impact have come among young Americans – especially young men. Today, 47% of men under 30 say legal sports betting is a bad thing for society, up from 22% who said this in 2022. Women under 30 have also become more likely to express this view: 35% see legal sports betting as bad for society, up from 25% three years ago.” More. (link)

SBJ’s Ben Portnoy reached out to nearly two dozen ADs from nine conferences in an attempt to gain a better understanding of their experiences with the College Sports Commission. Overall, 15 agreed to participate on the condition of anonymity to speak candidly. On how effective the CSC has been in its early days, one Group of 5 AD remarked: “It’s not [CSC CEO] Bryan Seeley’s fault. He was set up to fail from the start with timing, lack of authority.” On if the CSC is working effectively, a Power 4 AD commented: “No, not yet. Fully anticipate it will, otherwise [we’re] not paying for services not rendered. [There was] a lot of initial buildout cost. Results need to happen. It’s still in the process of being built out. An investigative team needs to be fully operational immediately … If you are going to cheat, now is the time.” On the biggest concerns related to the CSC, one Group of 5 AD said: “If they can’t enforce the cap, they’re useless, which will further complicate things as we don’t know what we’re supposed to pay for anyway, or what amounts.” Another Power 4 AD added: “The sooner we can get to some kind of transparency on what’s real and what isn’t real, the better. … We’re still operating in this twilight zone of fantasy land where agents are pretending like nothing has changed, which is causing assistant coaches to assume nothing has changed, which is causing some real anxiety and uncertainty. The sooner we can resolve that the better.” Much more. (link)

Virginia Tech announces the eight-member search committee that will begin work immediately to identify the Hokies’ next Football HC. Included are former Super Bowl-winning HC Bruce Arians, Ryan Berman Advisory Managing Partner Bridget Ryan Berman, former KPMG Chairman/CEO Lynne Doughtie, former VT Football Assoc. HC Bud Foster, Air Control Concepts President/CEO Brad Hobbs, former Under Secretary of the U.S. Army/Virginia Tech Board of Visitors member Ryan McCarthy, Vehicle Accessory Founder/Board of Visitors member J. Pearson and former NFL pro/current ACC Network studio & in-game analyst Eddie Royal. (link)

Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock corrects former Arizona Cardinals/Tampa Bay Buccaneers HC Bruce Arians’ recent comments that the Hokies would hire a GM before hiring a Football HC, noting there were discussions about doing so, but “if we put a GM in place that our next head coach has no relation with, it could severely limit our head coach candidate pool. And we certainly don’t want that. The head coach will come first and will have input into the whole front office and hires.” Regarding the program’s new setup overall, Babcock says it will “look like an NFL model. Though Babcock didn’t say exactly how that would work, noting that the Hokies are considering several college models, he mentioned Ole Miss, where Lane Kiffin is the head coach who hired a general manager in Billy Glasscock to be a pairing that’s “50-50 equals.” Regarding his future in Blacksburg, Babcock explains: “I work at the pleasure of the Board and the President, and my role continues to be being the AD. I want to help this search committee in any way I can and same for the next head coach, get him up and running and succeeding. My role will also include helping lay the infrastructure and groundwork on this new budget investment and the step-by-step Invest To Win plan. The AD role is always to continue to help the university navigate the new and ever-changing landscape of college athletics.” (link)

A group of nearly a dozen high-level UCLA donors has reached out to the Los Angeles Times alleging a “pattern of rampant dysfunction inside the athletic department that goes well beyond the surprise hiring and speedy dismissal of football coach DeShaun Foster.” Per Ben Bolch, the donors “also questioned [AD Martin] Jarmond’s [NIL] strategy, high spending despite years of running up massive athletic department deficits and failure to fire coach Chip Kelly amid subpar results.” Men’s Basketball season-ticket holder Jim Bendat offers some balance: “I have some sympathy for Jarmond. Money had to be an issue when he arguably should have fired Kelly immediately after the ‘23 season. Then the timing of Kelly’s departure put Jarmond in a nearly impossible situation. Basketball, baseball, softball and Olympic sports are doing fine. Is it fair to give credit for those successes only to the coaches and players, but blame only Jarmond for football failures? I don’t think that’s fair at all. Because football is the cash cow, that’s the big focus. I say give this AD another chance to get this right. It will be the biggest hire he will ever make, and he has to get it right this time.” More. (link)

Butler AD Grant Leiendecker visits with IBJ Media’s Dave Neff on Talent Scout to offer his insight on how the AD role is changing with the introduction of revenue sharing & NIL and why resource generation is his top priority. Leiendecker: “You mentioned the word adaptability. I think that’s critical to anyone’s success in this role these days. I’m still learning, how do I need to structure my team? How do I need to manage my time? Where am I best suited to serve Butler University? The reality is that’s got to be resource acquisition for the most part. That’s our biggest opportunity. With NIL, I believe we have an unbelievable product to sell. When you think about the power of our institution, the academic strength, the city we’re in. … The reality is though, the number one reason that you’re able to attract and retain talent is your NIL compensation. That’s significant. As a smaller alumni base, historically, it’s been you’ve got to go raise the money through donors. There’s still a little bit of that now for us. So, that’s where I’m spending a lot of my time on how we modernize our revenue generation both through corporate entities, through ticket sales and then the outside fundraising piece.” More from Leiendecker. The partnership also includes an Institute-wide partnership to advance Georgia Tech’s and Under Armour’s shared commitment to innovation. In his comments, Tech AD Ryan Alpert specifically points to “innovative NIL opportunities.” LEONA assisted in facilitating the partnership. The Professional Bull Riders (PBR) are bringing their show to Florida State’s Doak Campbell Stadium over March 13-14, 2026, as part of their “Unleash the Beast" series, with bull riding and a major music act concert slated to be held each night. Noles AD Michael Alford wants to transform Doak into a year-round revenue stream, remarking: “I've always said January to April is going to be dirt season at Doak. We want to do as many events and get as many people in this community as possible.” Overall, the PBR will haul in 5.5M pounds of dirt to cover roughly 30K square feet along with additional sound, video and lighting to cover Bobby Bowden Field in a production more than three times the size of a traditional elite tour event. ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports Tarleton State Men’s Basketball HC Billy Gillispie “has been placed on temporary administrative leave as the university investigates an anonymous complaint.” No details of the complaint's nature were immediately available and no timeline exists for how long the investigation may take, while the school refused to comment further on the matter. Assoc. HC Glynn Cyprien has taken over the program as Acting HC. (link)

The latest edition of CRO.ticker hit inboxes this morning. If you missed it, Revenue Brew’s Layla Ilchi examines the maturation of the CRO role and why those who hold the positions have shorter tenures than their C-suite peers. This issue also includes a look at TikTok’s ascension as an R&D lab and a checkout lane for F&B brands, the Indianapolis Colts’ implementation of Dormakaba Alvarado UltraQ Pedestals at entry points and more. There’s also this from Spotify Co-Founder/CEO Daniel Ek on balancing personal taste and data-driven analysis when making product decisions: “Sooner or later what ends up happening is you get into the space where you don’t even know anymore because your current feedback loop of where the world is and the customer you're designing for starts becoming a little bit different. And then you need to get to a point where you start incorporating some feedback mechanism. So, for me, taste is sort of judgment plus curiosity. … It’s really a question for me of allowing as much feedback as humanly possible so you can get yourself or your small team to some level of taste.” Not subscribed yet? The Big Ten, Big Ten Network and Allstate announce the creation of the AllState Big Ten Women’s Championship Series to spotlight and celebrate excellence in women’s athletics across the league. The new year-long competition is part of a multi-year collaboration establishing Allstate as the Official Insurance Partner of the Big Ten Conference with schools earning points based on their teams’ performance in regular and postseason play. At the end of the academic year, the school with the highest point total will be recognized as the overall champion. In addition, Allstate will become the title sponsor of the Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament, present all 12 Big Ten Women’s Olympic Sports championships and tournaments, including soccer, gymnastics and softball, and sponsor On The Pitch, BTN’s new series spotlighting women’s soccer stories across the conference. San Diego State has released three new secondary logos, Ocelotl (jaguar), Calli (house), and Ehecatl (wind), marking the result of a six-year project to identify iconography that is historically reflective of the Aztecs’ culture while aligning with the school’s pillar values. Per The San Diego Union-Tribune’s Mark Zeigler, “there are scarlet and black versions that sports teams will likely use as secondary marks, appearing on the neckline of a uniform or perhaps on practice shirts. There are also full-color variants with different shades of teal plus a yellow called ‘golden’ that the university, which recognizes teal as an official color in addition to scarlet and black, will use.” AD John David Wicker: “Part of us wanting to do this has been this notion that, ‘They took the Warrior away, now they’re going to take the Aztecs name next.’ This reinforces that we’re not. We’re the Aztecs. President (Adela) de la Torre has leaned into that. It’s who we are. Teams within athletics can determine which of them they want to use. I don’t envision it being a primary mark on the front of a uniform, like, for example, the duck at Oregon. I don’t anticipate that, but maybe things will change in the future.” (link)
