NCAA Basketball Tournament expansion is moving closer to a reality, reports Ross Dellenger for On3. With potential to begin for the 2026-27 event, “eight games are expected to be added to the current ‘First Four’ played over Tuesday and Wednesday of the first week of the event.” It won’t be called the “First Twelve,” however, as one high-placed executive tells Dellenger: “We’ll call it the opening round.” The new opening round will feature “24 teams playing in 12 games over the two days, with six games each at two sites (Dayton, the current home of the First Four, plus another likely more basketball-centric Western location). Those involved in the negotiations caution that plenty of this could change through the course of continuing talks with TV partners Warner Bros. Discovery and CBS. [...] Why 12 games? The entire goal is to keep the first round of the tournament at 64 teams. [...] In the opening round, the split is expected to remain the same: 12 lower-seeded automatic qualifiers and 12 at-large selections meeting one another. However, that could always change during the course of negotiations. Under this 12-and-12 plan, eight additional teams would be extracted from the main bracket, plus the eight new at-large selections derived from expansion. Basically, eight more at-large teams, previously secure in the first-round field, are now having to play an extra, play-in type game to reach the weekend tournament.” More. (link)

SBJ’s Ben Portnoy: “Student Athlete NIL, which at one point worked with more than 40 schools, including a number of Power Four institutions such as Georgia Tech, Rutgers, Syracuse, Oklahoma and Wake Forest, alerted clients in recent days that it is shutting down operations.” SANIL was founded by Jason Belzer in 2021. Early in 2025, Blueprint Sports announced its acquisition of SANIL. (link); Belzer, who had previously departed the C-suite for an advisory role with the company, fully exited in January of this year to pursue other opportunities. Belzer remained a shareholder of SANIL & was succeeded as CEO by Chris Brown. More Portnoy: “SBJ first reported it (SANIL) was set to be acquired by Blueprint Sports and the companies were slated to boast a portfolio of more than 70 NIL collectives and create a wide-ranging, nationwide footprint.” (link); At that time, Brown, listed on the Blueprint’s website as the “former SANIL CEO and newly appointed COO for Blueprint Sports” stated, “This acquisition merges both companies’ proven NIL and data solutions to create the most advanced technology and services platform in collegiate sports.” What happened in the months that followed is unknown, as the merger was never finalized. Blueprint Sports CEO Rob Sine to Portnoy on today’s news: “Earlier this year, Blueprint Sports entered into a Letter of Intent with SANIL; however, the deal did not move forward. We remain focused on leading the next chapter of NIL by delivering innovative fan monetization solutions that connect student-athletes with their communities. Above all, our priority is driving meaningful NIL revenue for athletes.” (link)

Yahoo Sports’ Dan Wolken explores how the mindset has shifted from “SEC doormat to darling” within the Vanderbilt athletics department, observing “the inferiority complex of being the SEC’s doormat was so profoundly woven into everyday life here that Vanderbilt’s coaches would often find themselves recruiting against disparaging comments made about the program by guides giving campus tours — which often included prospective football players.” Commodores Chancellor Daniel Diermeier: “We had to be crystal clear that we had to stop looking over our shoulder and comparing ourselves with other universities. We can pay attention to what the Ivies are doing, but at the end of the day, we need to do what is consistent with who we are and a key component of our identity is that we do everything from Bach to baseball. We have no tolerance for mediocrity anywhere.” AD Candice Lee: “There’s a change internally with how we are carrying ourselves and being unapologetic about it.” More. (link)

Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger observes this weekend’s match-up against No. 4 Miami (FL) is “a critical game in a pivotal season for Florida State football,” especially after last week’s upset loss to Virginia, because “no place is in more of a win-now mode than Florida State. No school has invested so much in the recent past.” With two overlapping stadium projects, consisting of Doak Campbell Stadium renovations and a new football-only building approaching a $400M tab, as well as an overhauled roster and coaching staff resulting from last season’s two-win campaign, that came with a reported price tag near $40M, FSU’s “financial tab creeps toward a half-billion dollars.” Noles AD Michael Alford: “My job is to provide the resources to be successful. Coming out of the House settlement, everybody else stopped building facilities. I went ‘Hell no, guys. We’ve got to go pedal to the metal!’ When you have a depression, you gain market share. You double down.” Dellenger continues: “In a comment that speaks to the importance of home game ticket sales, one person close to the program said, ‘That stadium has to be a money-printing machine for the athletic department.’ It’s important to win enough games in order to fill the stadium and generate more money to … win more games.” More. “Innovative leadership, increased institutional investment and a set of coaches that will be mentioned for every big job that opens up this coaching cycle” have been behind the American’s early 2025 success in college football, writes CBS Sports’ John Talty who observes that Commissioner Tim Pernetti “has been aggressive about positioning the American as an innovative conference willing to take some chances to stand out from the rest of college athletics.” Tulane AD David Harris: “I've been really impressed at his ability to kind of put everything on the table and allow us a chance to be able to really look at it, to understand it, to explore it, to talk with our presidents, to have all of us know that we want to turn over every rock possible and to find a way to improve the individual schools.” Pernetti: “You can't spend a lot of time playing defense. You have to spend time creating new resources and generating new revenue and creating a higher level of competition in your league because you want to make it a place that people want to stay and that others want to come to. And, by the way, people are staying and we have a lot of encouraging conversations with people outside the conference. My job is to create more value however I can.” More. (link)

Duke extends Men’s Basketball HC Jon Scheyer through the 2030-31 season, reports ESPN’s Jeff Borzello and Pete Thamel, who note the extension adds two years to a deal that previously ran through 2028-29. Duke AD Nina King: “Jon's remarkable impact over his first three seasons has positioned Duke Basketball for sustained excellence, and we are proud to ensure his leadership well into the future. He has delivered championships and national prominence, and he continues to lead a program built on character, connection and a relentless pursuit of greatness. Jon's vision for Duke Basketball aligns perfectly with our highest aspirations, and we couldn't be more excited for the future of this program under his leadership. (link)

New Mexico is launching a feasibility study, through an architecture joint venture of Gensler and Dekker, looking at modernizing University Stadium and developing its south campus into a mixed-use economic development district. The study will “assess University Stadium’s condition and review the venue’s fan experience, game-day experience basics (restrooms and concessions, for example), premium amenities and revenue generation capabilities. That will result in a new design that supports more year-round use, including for community gatherings, high school state championships and other statewide events. Construction estimates and renderings will provide the university with phasing options, in addition to a mixed-use development analysis of the South Campus Tax Increment Development District (TIDD). [...] UNM expects the full feasibility work to take between six and 12 months, with stadium findings available in early 2026.” (link)

Even more from Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, who highlights new rules announced last month and approved this week by the Division I Board of Directors, including that schools can no longer guarantee a student-athlete any third-party NIL deal money verbally or in writing and that all collective or booster deals must include a specific direct activation. Dellenger adds: “A third rule - requiring the reporting of deals by high school enrollees - is also in this batch. Rules must be posted for 30 days before formal adoption.” (link)

The Big Ten is exploring a private capital deal that would bring at least $2B into the league, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel and Dan Wetzel. The deal would come alongside the formation of a commercial entity, tentatively named Big Ten Enterprises, to house all revenue generation, with 20 equity shares held by each member, the conference and a new investor and an extension of the B1G’s grant of rights through 2046. Thamel and Wetzel note the league is considering three different private capital entities. Further: “While there is support from nearly the entire league, according to sources, a few of the league's biggest brands -- including Ohio State and Michigan -- are still in discussions with the league. The aim is to have unanimous support before a vote, sources told ESPN. […] The potentially groundbreaking plan, which has been presented across the 18-member conference over the last few months, calls for immediate cash payments to each school, the amount based on a formula that factors in numerous variables including current budgets. The amount of those payments is still being discussed, but the basic format, sources told ESPN, is believed to be tiered. All schools in the league are expected to receive at least a nine-figure amount up front. The final financial details are still being discussed as bigger brands are expected to receive more money.” Lots more. (link)
|
Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde reports the conference has been discussing various iterations of this plan for months, with some sources indicating they believed the concept was running out of steam as time dragged on. “At the very least, there is no unanimity within the Big Ten at the moment, sources say, with schools having varying views of whether this is a prudent approach to additional revenue generation.” Forde goes on to posit that “even if the league succeeds in crafting an arrangement that does not cede any of its major functions to an outside firm, the new partner in Big Ten Enterprises would theoretically have a lot to say about how business is done. The conference already has one very influential, hands-on partner in that regard in Fox.” (link)
|
The Big Ten indicates in a statement that "our membership has clearly expressed the need to modernize the operations and structure of our conference to ensure that the Big Ten remains best positioned to offer the highest level of athletic and academic excellence in a rapidly evolving landscape. Over a year ago, we initiated a comprehensive evaluation of our practices to identify partnerships that could secure the financial stability of our member institutions and allow us to not only protect, but expand, opportunities for our student-athletes. This is an ongoing process, and we remain committed to finding a path that strengthens the conference for the future." (link)

Meanwhile, Michigan regent Jordan Acker weighs in: “As a Regent, I believe selling off Michigan’s precious public university assets would betray our responsibility to students and taxpayers. I will firmly oppose any such effort – and I hope colleagues at [Michigan State] and [Ohio State] will stand with me as well.” Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell agrees, writing on X: “Amen. Private Equity deals, at the conference level, make zero business sense. All these deals do is give more power, control, and job security to the Conference Commissioners (which probably explains these suspicious media leaks and obfuscation with respect to the actual terms of the deals). Why would an entity (like Michigan), with a $19B endowment, take money from Private Equity, when (through their endowment) they invest in Private Equity funds and pay a fee and promote to do so?? Doesn’t pass the ‘smell test’ at a very basic and common sense level.” (link)

SoCon Commissioner Michael Cross visits with The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman and had this to say about whether he believes realignment has settled down: “I think your head is always on a swivel trying to understand where are your current members and I think trying to position yourself so that other people look and think about ‘is that a place that we might want to join and want to be a part of the membership?’ We constantly try to position ourselves in ways that put out a positive message and talk about the strengths of our conference. … We really don’t have any situations where people need to think about getting on a plane to travel and compete against conference competition. Obviously, we’ve added a school for next year in Tennessee Tech. They check all the boxes. … It’s gonna help solve problems. It’s gonna bring more home games to our campuses. It’s going to give more competition. … We feel like that additional school puts us in a good spot and I think that gives us a lot of stability to tell you the truth. Whether any more come will remain to be seen, and I don’t want to get too specific on what we’re thinking, but there’s a lot of opportunity in front of us. I feel like we’re in a really, really good place right now.” More from Cross. (link)

More on the three-judge panel from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit that dismissed the NCAA’s appeal in Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia’s eligibility case. In writing his concurring opinion, Judge Amul Thapar noted: “College sports deserve careful planning. They provide a unique opportunity for young men and women to make lifelong friends, develop leadership skills, and learn self-discipline and self-confidence. … When courts decide who is qualified to participate in this great tradition, we implicate the line separating college athletics from professional athletics. Our intervention could have unknown consequences on the intangible benefits from college sports." Furthermore, Thapar concluded that “Congress should consider stepping in to preserve these benefits for the millions of young athletes yet to come. Until it does so, judges should tread carefully in this area and insist on a thorough record from which to rule." (link)

Kansas is projecting a $14.9M deficit based on a budget of $149.9M in expenses and $135M in revenue for FY26. KU finished FY25 with an actual deficit of $11.9M after initially projecting a shortfall of $16.8M. Jayhawks Executive Assoc. AD/CFO Pat Kaufman attributed these figures to the ongoing development of the Gateway project and noted the department included them in a long-term forecast when they began the project. Kaufman adds KU expects to potentially undergo one more deficit in FY27 before “conventions and conferences, hotel activity, concerts, all those types of things, plus potentially our premium seating revenues” result in surpluses beginning in FY28. To help mitigate the shortfall, KU expects to spend less on grants in aid, team travel, team operating expenses, department operating expenses, Kansas Team Health, deferred maintenance and capital projects than it did in 2025. Worth a watch: Stanford Football utilizes a hilarious video featuring GM Andrew Luck to announce a “Captain Andrew Luck” bobblehead giveaway modeled after the popular parody X account that became a fan-favorite during Luck’s NFL playing days. The Washington Post’s Jesse Dougherty explains why standout Princeton men’s basketball standout Caden Pierce is sitting out this year: “The reason, at least the biggest one, is so he can finish his degree in economics, spending this year at Princeton as a nonathlete, a regular old student, before transferring to a bigger program for his final college season. And the reasons for that, at least the two biggest, are so he can showcase himself against tougher competition and make the big money that Ivy League schools don’t offer.” Still, money isn’t the only factor in Pierce’s decision, as Dougherty points out that after starting at Princeton with four other freshmen, he’s the last remaining player in his class. Furthermore, two of his favorite assistant coaches are gone, and he played through torn ligaments in his ankle last year. Would he make this decision if Ivy League schools could pay players the way Power 4 programs do? Pierce explains: “I can’t say for sure, but it’s 1,000% a harder decision. It wasn’t an easy choice, but you can see why I would do that. There is lots of money out there, higher-level basketball, a chance to prove myself. Yeah, I love Princeton and everything it has given me. But it just felt like the scale has long been leaning toward this being the right move. College sports have changed so much.” Lots more. (link)
