More on Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell’s Saving College Sports ad controversy as networks Fox and ABC refused to run the new spot during football games on Saturday. Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich: “A representative for Fox did not immediately respond to requests for comment. ESPN, which shares rights with ABC under their parent company Disney, declined to comment. An ESPN source, however, said the decision reflects their standard review procedures. The network requested ‘more supporting documentation’ regarding the ad, but because none was supplied in a timely manner, the network couldn’t air it this weekend, according to the source. ESPN has run Campbell’s ads in the past.” (link)

Campbell also sat with Puck’s John Ourand in a new podcast conversation. Of particular note from Campbell: “...we’ve gotten an incredible amount of resistance from the big-conference commissioners. They all acknowledge that they’d make more money if we were to [pool media rights], but they do not want to give up control. They see it as a threat to their position. They see it as a threat to their kind of fiefdom that they have established and their importance. And so they’ve dragged their feet and fought it in the halls of Congress. … If we’re going to kind of semi-pro professionalize college sports…we also have to professionalize the revenue side.” Campbell suggests looking to the USOPC as a model for future college sports governance, explaining that “it’s a model that’s independently governed by a group of people who are looking at the long-term benefit of the program… So we need an independent body. That independent body needs to have representation from big schools, from small schools, from women’s sports, from Olympic sports to revenue sports. Everybody needs to have representation and a say in the direction that college sports go.” More from Campbell. (link)

Kansas AD Travis Goff notes KU wouldn’t be able to complete the construction of the new east side of Booth Memorial Stadium in time for the 2026 season if they do it the right way, so that leaves open the likelihood of a partially completed east side with reduced capacity next fall. The Topeka Capital Journal’s Jordan Guskey: “Goff described it as one more season of some strain and discomfort, as they look ahead to a 2027 season that the stadium will be finished for. The hotel would be on its way at that point, as they also deal with other mixed-use development endeavors. It’s all a part of an effort to enhance the year-round economic potential the site can have for the larger area.” (link)

UAB AD Mark Ingram sat down with AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown to offer insight into how he’s translated his core values into an actionable vision for the Blazers. Ingram explains that “when I got the job, which I basically got because nobody else wanted it, and all my mentors said, ‘Don’t go there, that’s a career-ending job, don’t do it.’ But that was the opportunity – to go fix that and change [it]. It was the right time. Identifying what are those things that need to be done was incredibly easy.” Ingram and Brown also connect Ingram’s passion for service with his three values for the department – winning championships, graduating with honors and making a difference – and how the Blazers have tapped into those values to attract resources for facilities enhancements in an effort to propel key programs forward. When it comes to making a difference, Ingram says: “We are really proud of the amount of community service hours that we support Birmingham with. It’s over 4,000 hours a year from our staff and our student-athletes. It’s something we take great pride in, and it’s part of the learning experience, too. You know, you learn so much outside of the classroom, probably more so, or at least as much as you do inside the classroom. So those are, those are really important things.” Full conversation on ADU. Sacramento State President Luke Wood last week said of the future of the Hornets’ football program: “What we basically have focused on is finding that third space, that third avenue to get there. And that's being open to conferences that are outside of our area, but also open to being an FCS program that plays primarily FBS opponents.” Hero Sports’ Sam Herder lays out some potential scenarios for the Hornets in 2026: “1. Classified as an FCS independent, plays a mix of FCS/FBS opponents (FCS teams have openings with a 12th game being added. FBS teams won't play a 2nd FCS opponent because that 2nd win doesn't count toward bowl eligibility). 2. Classified as an FCS independent, plays mostly FBS opponents. That's a tight turnaround time to add multiple FBS opponents, though, especially with bowl eligibility considerations mentioned above. Pac-12 teams need another game in 2026, but reportedly aren't looking Sac State's way. 3. Classified as an FCS independent, plays mostly FCS opponents mixed with a couple of non-D1s and FBS opponents before adding more FBS games to the slate each year. 4. Gets a football-only invite from an FBS conference not named the Pac-12 or the MWC.” (link)

Merrimack AD Joe Foley steps into the role with a clear mandate: raise millions to upgrade facilities and grow the Warriors’ brand as the school continues its DI ascent. After a campus tour with President Christopher Hopey, Foley admits: “We both realized, ‘Wow, we’ve got some work to do on the facilities front.’” Foley’s immediate focus includes major renovations to the Volpe Complex and new locker rooms for nearly every team – critical upgrades, he says, for recruiting at the DI level. Foley also plans to shift basketball games to Lawler Arena and maintain men’s hockey as a “crown jewel” in Hockey East. Hopey calls the transition “smooth” and adds that “Joe can do both” when it comes to balancing donor relations with campus connection. Hopey adds: “I don’t have to think about athletics. I can go back to doing what I love – being a fan.” (link)

VCU is close to a two-part deal that includes moving its baseball games to the new CarMax Park and selling Sports Backers Stadium to Richmond’s Economic Development Authority (EDA). The move would raise VCU’s annual baseball cost from about $130K at The Diamond to roughly $700K at CarMax Park ($400K lease to the EDA + $300K to the Richmond Flying Squirrels under an operating agreement covering wear-and-tear). In parallel, VCU would sell Sports Backers Stadium for $25M, giving the EDA the land it needs for the Diamond District and providing VCU capital to advance its Athletics Village – starting with a $38M track & field venue that will include 1,000 seats, natural grass, a 400m track, full field event amenities, and two practice fields. CarMax Park is on track to be mostly completed in February with Opening Day set for April 7, 2026. Initially, the authority planned to charge VCU an annual payment of $500K – significantly less than the $3.2M the Squirrels will pay. The city of Richmond will use lease payments, real estate taxes from inside the district and other revenues to pay off the $130M in general obligation bonds the city sold to fund the cost of constructing the ballpark. Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders said after CU’s Saturday loss to TCU that “I think I've got more blood clots. It don't make sense. I'm hurting like crazy. ... I'm not getting blood to my leg. That's why my leg is throbbing." Sanders added that he has a doctor’s appointment scheduled for Monday. We offer our best wishes to Coach Prime for a full and speedy recovery. (link)

While the details were redacted from Georgia Tech’s new apparel sponsorship with Under Armour, On3’s Kelly Quinlan reports the Yellow Jackets “will get much more out of this deal because Adidas charged the program full price for merchandise purchased, while Under Armour is going to give Tech more money overall than Adidas was and will only charge wholesale prices. That is part of how you start to hit on that six times the previous deal figure (as reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel). For Georgia Tech, the purchasing power and money are worth a lot more than what the Adidas deal was. The one concern is the rising price of goods due to tariffs, supply problems, and other issues in the merchandising world. The wholesale aspect will protect a little from some of the cost increases in that world.” Quinlan also notes that Yellow Jackets AD Ryan Alpert “has pushed behind the scenes to continue to loosen up Georgia Tech’s licensing agreements with third-party vendors. Rhoback launched its Georgia Tech collection ahead of the season. There will be more vendors in that world offering up Yellow Jackets’ gear per our sources, and in the bookstore. That is good news for Tech fans, as there should be more available clothing options and other Tech merchandise.” (link)

Ohio State says it brought in a record $44M in gross sponsorship deals last year, and expects to top that this year, according to Bloomberg’s Janet Lorin, who adds: “That doesn’t include the sponsorship deal with Anduril. It also sold a record $260M in gross merchandise sales.” (link)

JohnWallStreet last month noted that pharmaceutical advertising reform will extend the length of commercials and make them more expensive, which could lead to a reduction in the category’s TV footprint. “That is going to be problematic for media companies and could be another headwind in future sports rights negotiations.” Crakes Media Principal Patrick Crakes subsequently submits that “over the past two decades, pharmaceutical advertising has evolved to become a top three spend category on linear TV programming across all platforms. In the first half of 2025, pharma ads totaled approx. $3B, up a very strong +12% YTY. Not surprisingly, any event that could cause that growth to decelerate or, even worse, reduce total spend is a big issue for sports media.” (link)

College.town's Kristen Eargle sits down with RallyFuel Founder and CEO Parth Desai to discuss his new platform's approach to providing an innovative NIL site for fans, athletes, and schools. Eargle and Desai talk about how the RallyFuel platform allows even casual fans to earn points and rewards in exchange for committing funds to athletes, predicting the winners of weekly matchups, posting on the platform and more. “Fans can predict outcomes of games. It doesn’t matter whether they’re right or wrong, they receive points for engaging on the platform, which can be redeemed for prizes. … We’re going to expand the points system to allow fans to redeem those points for coupons at a stadium merchandise store – 20% off for a beer and a burger at a restaurant surrounding the stadium, 10% off at the student bookstore. … Interacting with the whole college experience is really what we’re going for.” RallyFuel allows fans to commit money to help their teams retain and recruit student-athletes, and Desai understands the importance of compliance and administering payments. “Upon an athlete being on the official school roster and completing the deliverables, that is when the NIL deal is triggered, and the athlete can withdraw the funds. … We have partnered with Darren Heitner who has guided us very closely on our compliance framework. We record all of the transactions for NIL Go so they can see where all of the monies are coming and going. All of the money is locked until the deliverables are completed by the athlete. … And if the environment changes at a federal or state level, we’re on top of it.” Lots more in this College.town Partner Spotlight. Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell posts the latest Saving College Sports ad on his X account that TV networks refused to air yesterday. He also comments: “No good reason given as to why - just ignoring us or telling us to contact their attorneys. The General Council for one major network told me it was a ‘business decision’. This was AFTER we’d sent them a large wire to pay for the ads! Why would the networks want to silence a legitimate debate around an issue that affects hundreds of thousands of kids and is existentially threatening to women’s sports and Olympic sports? What is the ‘business reason’ that overrides the benefit and enjoyment that college sports provide to tens of millions of Americans? What are they hiding?? If there was ever a question that money, control, and greed are being prioritized over student athletes, fans, and communities…Here you go!! … This fight isn’t about me, and it certainly isn’t about TV ads - it’s much bigger. It’s about doing what is right and necessary to save a great American institution. I promise that I won’t stop fighting until we are successful in solving this problem, and I know I can count on many of you to join me!” (link)

More from Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock on his future in Blacksburg in relation to the Hokies search for a new Football leader: “We’ve had lots to be proud of, but obviously, I’m certainly aware the recent lack of success on the football field, that’s weighed heavily on me, on our fan base, on our department, and whatever role I can play and we can play to improve that significantly I am absolutely all for that. And I’m inspired and motivated by that, and again, we absolutely need to reward this fan and alumni base way more than we have been in football. And again, the budget growth should make that more easily attainable — or maybe a better way to say that is minimize the risk of mediocrity. I also want to own this, though. Even with the limited resources we did have over the past few years, we should’ve performed better. I don’t play, coach the team, any of that, of course, but the buck stops with me. I hire the coach, I own that and we simply haven’t been good enough in football and haven’t met expectations. So incredibly motivated to change that narrative, as is the Board and the president. Again, reward this fan base for what they give to us, and it’s a critical time in our history and collectively we’ve got to step up and the new budget plan will most certainly help. Again, it will be invested wisely, strategically, with noticeable return on investment.” (link)

Wisconsin Deputy AD/CRO Mitchell Pinta joins Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz and says this on how his role as CRO has evolved during his time in the position: “When I first came here, I was really deliberate in laying out what the revenue opportunities were for us. You can’t boil the ocean. You can’t try and do everything. And I tried being as specific as possible and really looked at our three key lines of business, ticketing, fundraising and sponsorship and how we were going to re-org some of those areas. Where we were going to extend partnerships. Where we were going to shift partnerships. Where we were going to focus, and what the biggest opportunity was for us as well. There’s certain areas where we could spend 100% of our time, but the growth is only going to be so much. I think that was a key piece of it. Then, outlining for the whole organization, hey, this piece over here, brand marketing or public relations or whatever it may be. I have a desire to go and improve that or grow that area of the business. We’re not going to do that right now, because in order to effectively do whatever this change is going to be in whatever area, we all need to be focused on it. We need to have the right personnel. It’s coming at a time too where we need to be really mindful of cost. … Just because there’s a problem doesn’t mean you can hire three people to solve it. Trying to balance that as well. … Revenue growth has been incredible. We had three straight years of record sponsorship, record ticket sales, record fundraising, but to be able to do that at a relatively stable headcount is something that I’m really proud of.” More from Pinta. More from CAA Commissioner Joe D’Antonio’s time late last week with The Field of 68 as he also reaffirms his support for March Madness expansion, noting that “I will remain cautiously optimistic. I have the utmost faith in Danny Gavitt. … If everything aligns properly, and I think Danny’s going to get us to that point, and whether it’s 72, 76, whatever it might be, I’m in full support.” D’Antonio points to the popularity of the wild card expansion in MLB before adding: “It provides opportunities for some teams, like teams in the CAA, for us to maybe get an extra bid.” (link)

Cal State Bakersfield President Vernon B. Harper Jr. announced the formation of a president's commission on intercollegiate athletics to help guide the program through what he acknowledged has been a "bumpy" period. Harper Jr.: "We know it's been bumpy. Last two weeks. We wanted the dust. I wanted the dust to settle before I had these types of conversations to encourage our fans, to encourage our alumni, and always know that the runner spirit is always rising. Clearly, the last two weeks have made me sort of accelerate my thoughts around it and ensure that we have the right population of individuals membership on it, but it's really about setting the athletics with the program in the direction to be – have the success that it's had in the past." Harper Jr. will not serve on the commission. (link)

Blueprint Sports CEO Rob Sine responds to recent reporting connected to his company’s deal with Oregon State: “This is a high-risk deal for us. It’s a risk on my side and nobody is really paying attention to that. [...] I’ve seen some comments about how we are getting all these wild percentages of every dollar that come through media rights and all that. No, we’re not. This is really kind of an eat what we kill contract. My neck is on the line to be able to look at all this and say I believe we can make an impact here.” (link)

As part of their Candid Coaches series, CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander polled roughly 100 coaches, discovering 89% don’t trust their competitors to recruit within the rules now that what amounts to a salary cap exists in college athletics. One coach who answered no said: “I do not trust that most high-level competitors will stay within the rules. There is too much at stake. Personally, I would rather it be that way. It allowed opposing coaches to know who they were recruiting against and make the decision to stay involved or not." Another coach who voted no remarked: “No, at least not 100%. Until we have a governing body that can enforce rules and levy out 'real' punishments, those who have always found a way or 'cheated' will continue to do so.” A coach who answered yes observes: “I think you have to [follow the rules now]. In my opinion, this isn't five to 10 years ago -- when programs had to figure out how to hide a $10K-to-$50K payment. You are [now] talking about hiding hundreds of thousands of dollars, and in some cases millions. Maybe I am naive, I just don't see how people will hide that amount of money." More. (link)

Seven Kansas Men’s and Women’s Basketball student-athletes are set to serve as brand ambassadors, while engaging in a fundraising campaign to fight cancer, as part of a unique NIL deal with the University of Kansas Cancer Center. KU basketball players will use ShotTracker technology to showcase their dedication on the court while inspiring donations that fund lifesaving cancer research. MoffettNathanson analyst Michael Nathanson joins The Varsity podcast with Puck’s John Ourand to discuss what’s next for legacy media companies and says he’s been “flabbergasted” that more streamers haven’t been involved with recent rights deals: “It started with that UFC deal. I don’t understand how Paramount makes that deal – paying double what ESPN was paying. In the prioritization of what Paramount needs to fix, getting to UFC was not on my list of things they needed to do. But this is a new regime, a new day. And they’re really focused, rightly so, on sports, streaming, and studio. And that’s their three core drivers.” With the NFL all but assured to reopen negotiations next year, Nathanson explains: “The question I have is what these packages look like in the future. The NFL could create an A package and a B package, based solely on the quality of games. It would have more Chiefs and Bills games in the A package. But broadcasters like the packages the way they are; that’s where their station footprint is. I wonder if the networks want to try to get there before [Commissioner Roger] Goodell and [NFL EVP of Media Distribution] Hans Schroeder recut the packages into something different. Netflix wants to eventize their sports programming, right? So give Netflix the quarterback package – make it Lamar Jackson versus you pick the quarterback every single week. That said, if I’m the league, and I’m the broadcasters, I feel like my future is predictable if I keep these rights where they are. I know what my viewership looks like, and ad numbers keep going up. That’s predictable. The league doesn’t want to go into a more chaotic world.” (link)
