Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell posts the latest Saving College Sports ad on his X account that TV networks refused to air yesterday. He also comments: “No good reason given as to why - just ignoring us or telling us to contact their attorneys. The General Council for one major network told me it was a ‘business decision’. This was AFTER we’d sent them a large wire to pay for the ads! Why would the networks want to silence a legitimate debate around an issue that affects hundreds of thousands of kids and is existentially threatening to women’s sports and Olympic sports? What is the ‘business reason’ that overrides the benefit and enjoyment that college sports provide to tens of millions of Americans? What are they hiding?? If there was ever a question that money, control, and greed are being prioritized over student athletes, fans, and communities…Here you go!! … This fight isn’t about me, and it certainly isn’t about TV ads - it’s much bigger. It’s about doing what is right and necessary to save a great American institution. I promise that I won’t stop fighting until we are successful in solving this problem, and I know I can count on many of you to join me!” (link)

More from Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock on his future in Blacksburg in relation to the Hokies search for a new Football leader: “We’ve had lots to be proud of, but obviously, I’m certainly aware the recent lack of success on the football field, that’s weighed heavily on me, on our fan base, on our department, and whatever role I can play and we can play to improve that significantly I am absolutely all for that. And I’m inspired and motivated by that, and again, we absolutely need to reward this fan and alumni base way more than we have been in football. And again, the budget growth should make that more easily attainable — or maybe a better way to say that is minimize the risk of mediocrity. I also want to own this, though. Even with the limited resources we did have over the past few years, we should’ve performed better. I don’t play, coach the team, any of that, of course, but the buck stops with me. I hire the coach, I own that and we simply haven’t been good enough in football and haven’t met expectations. So incredibly motivated to change that narrative, as is the Board and the president. Again, reward this fan base for what they give to us, and it’s a critical time in our history and collectively we’ve got to step up and the new budget plan will most certainly help. Again, it will be invested wisely, strategically, with noticeable return on investment.” (link)

Wisconsin Deputy AD/CRO Mitchell Pinta joins Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz and says this on how his role as CRO has evolved during his time in the position: “When I first came here, I was really deliberate in laying out what the revenue opportunities were for us. You can’t boil the ocean. You can’t try and do everything. And I tried being as specific as possible and really looked at our three key lines of business, ticketing, fundraising and sponsorship and how we were going to re-org some of those areas. Where we were going to extend partnerships. Where we were going to shift partnerships. Where we were going to focus, and what the biggest opportunity was for us as well. There’s certain areas where we could spend 100% of our time, but the growth is only going to be so much. I think that was a key piece of it. Then, outlining for the whole organization, hey, this piece over here, brand marketing or public relations or whatever it may be. I have a desire to go and improve that or grow that area of the business. We’re not going to do that right now, because in order to effectively do whatever this change is going to be in whatever area, we all need to be focused on it. We need to have the right personnel. It’s coming at a time too where we need to be really mindful of cost. … Just because there’s a problem doesn’t mean you can hire three people to solve it. Trying to balance that as well. … Revenue growth has been incredible. We had three straight years of record sponsorship, record ticket sales, record fundraising, but to be able to do that at a relatively stable headcount is something that I’m really proud of.” More from Pinta. More from CAA Commissioner Joe D’Antonio’s time late last week with The Field of 68 as he also reaffirms his support for March Madness expansion, noting that “I will remain cautiously optimistic. I have the utmost faith in Danny Gavitt. … If everything aligns properly, and I think Danny’s going to get us to that point, and whether it’s 72, 76, whatever it might be, I’m in full support.” D’Antonio points to the popularity of the wild card expansion in MLB before adding: “It provides opportunities for some teams, like teams in the CAA, for us to maybe get an extra bid.” (link)

Cal State Bakersfield President Vernon B. Harper Jr. announced the formation of a president's commission on intercollegiate athletics to help guide the program through what he acknowledged has been a "bumpy" period. Harper Jr.: "We know it's been bumpy. Last two weeks. We wanted the dust. I wanted the dust to settle before I had these types of conversations to encourage our fans, to encourage our alumni, and always know that the runner spirit is always rising. Clearly, the last two weeks have made me sort of accelerate my thoughts around it and ensure that we have the right population of individuals membership on it, but it's really about setting the athletics with the program in the direction to be – have the success that it's had in the past." Harper Jr. will not serve on the commission. (link)

Blueprint Sports CEO Rob Sine responds to recent reporting connected to his company’s deal with Oregon State: “This is a high-risk deal for us. It’s a risk on my side and nobody is really paying attention to that. [...] I’ve seen some comments about how we are getting all these wild percentages of every dollar that come through media rights and all that. No, we’re not. This is really kind of an eat what we kill contract. My neck is on the line to be able to look at all this and say I believe we can make an impact here.” (link)

As part of their Candid Coaches series, CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander polled roughly 100 coaches, discovering 89% don’t trust their competitors to recruit within the rules now that what amounts to a salary cap exists in college athletics. One coach who answered no said: “I do not trust that most high-level competitors will stay within the rules. There is too much at stake. Personally, I would rather it be that way. It allowed opposing coaches to know who they were recruiting against and make the decision to stay involved or not." Another coach who voted no remarked: “No, at least not 100%. Until we have a governing body that can enforce rules and levy out 'real' punishments, those who have always found a way or 'cheated' will continue to do so.” A coach who answered yes observes: “I think you have to [follow the rules now]. In my opinion, this isn't five to 10 years ago -- when programs had to figure out how to hide a $10K-to-$50K payment. You are [now] talking about hiding hundreds of thousands of dollars, and in some cases millions. Maybe I am naive, I just don't see how people will hide that amount of money." More. (link)

Seven Kansas Men’s and Women’s Basketball student-athletes are set to serve as brand ambassadors, while engaging in a fundraising campaign to fight cancer, as part of a unique NIL deal with the University of Kansas Cancer Center. As part of the “Jayhawks Victory over Cancer” campaign running through Dec. 31, Flory Bidunga, Elle Evans, Elmarko Jackson, Jamari McDowell, Lilly Meister, S’Mya Nichols and Regan Williams will be featured on a variety of channels highlighting their dedication to basketball and to cancer research, all while encouraging donations to the KU Cancer Center through the V Foundation. KU basketball players will use ShotTracker technology to showcase their dedication on the court while inspiring donations that fund lifesaving cancer research. MoffettNathanson analyst Michael Nathanson joins The Varsity podcast with Puck’s John Ourand to discuss what’s next for legacy media companies and says he’s been “flabbergasted” that more streamers haven’t been involved with recent rights deals: “It started with that UFC deal. I don’t understand how Paramount makes that deal – paying double what ESPN was paying. In the prioritization of what Paramount needs to fix, getting to UFC was not on my list of things they needed to do. But this is a new regime, a new day. And they’re really focused, rightly so, on sports, streaming, and studio. And that’s their three core drivers.” With the NFL all but assured to reopen negotiations next year, Nathanson explains: “The question I have is what these packages look like in the future. The NFL could create an A package and a B package, based solely on the quality of games. It would have more Chiefs and Bills games in the A package. But broadcasters like the packages the way they are; that’s where their station footprint is. I wonder if the networks want to try to get there before [Commissioner Roger] Goodell and [NFL EVP of Media Distribution] Hans Schroeder recut the packages into something different. Netflix wants to eventize their sports programming, right? So give Netflix the quarterback package – make it Lamar Jackson versus you pick the quarterback every single week. That said, if I’m the league, and I’m the broadcasters, I feel like my future is predictable if I keep these rights where they are. I know what my viewership looks like, and ad numbers keep going up. That’s predictable. The league doesn’t want to go into a more chaotic world.” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger with an interesting update last night on the new ad produced by Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell pushing for a reform of the Sports Broadcasting Act that was set to run across the industry during games today: “College football’s national broadcast and cable partners have decided against airing this advertisement, those with knowledge of the decision say.” (link)

Navigate Founder AJ Maestas and VP of Consulting Charles Rolston sit down to discuss the Big Ten’s potential $2B private equity deal, and Maestas points out that this is a “great time of disruption. Never waste a crisis. What an opportunity to basically invest your way into the future given some significant costs these universities are facing. On the downside, I would say that's probably one of the motivators, right? They are scared. How are they going to meet this House vs. NCAA settlement among all the other things that are going on? And that's where I'm concerned is that this is a grab for cash because we need it today. Will we later regret it and say, ‘Well, we just issued a secondary equity offering when our stock was trading low.’ Right? Because the ultimate question is, are you going to make better use of those dollars in your hands today for long-term investments or are you better off in waiting?” Maestas predicts the deal ultimately won’t go through because of the outsized value Michigan and Ohio State bring to the league. For instance, Maestas notes: “Ohio State’s probably worth about four times what they get from Big Ten distribution.” Rolston disagrees and explains: “I think that Ohio State and Michigan are ultimately fence-sitting so that they can optimize the terms possible and they know that there's enough support for this to go through and if they try to fight it, it will be a political nightmare and a headache.” Full podcast. The Athletic’s Ralph Russo and Scott Dochterman also take a deeper look into the Big Ten’s possible PE pact and are told by Herrick Feinstein Sports Law Group co-Chair Irwin Kishner that “when you deal with publicly chartered universities, you do need to deal with the local state law that chartered the school. You can’t be perceived as selling an asset of the state. So, these things are things that you need to take into consideration when you’re investing into public universities.” Russo and Dochterman subsequently note the “workaround is to go through the Big Ten, which is considered a nonprofit organization. (Commissioner) Petitti and other Big Ten officials believe their conference and its assets are undervalued, a stance with which Kishner agreed. The danger is, if the Big Ten uses a subsidiary and cannot meet its financial obligations, an outside entity will control those assets. But there’s little fear the Big Ten won’t continue to grow financially and make this arrangement lucrative for everyone involved – provided Ohio State and Michigan remain part of it. [...] What Petitti is trying to pitch to all his members, but especially to the ones at the top of the food chain, is that everything you want athletically, academically and financially you can have under the umbrella of the Big Ten.” (link)
|
Sports Illustrated’s Bryan Fischer on the same topic: “Industry and conference sources tell Sports Illustrated the Big Ten’s talks have centered around three of the biggest private equity firms in the country - Apollo Global Management, Sixth Street Partners and Ares Management - and that a decision on moving forward with a potential deal could happen before the end of October. Many of the finer details are still being finalized, and there remains a lack of full unanimity among all schools in the Big Ten over whether to ultimately proceed with the new venture.” (link)

With college football just over a month away from the “weekly outrage ritual” of releasing the College Football Playoff rankings, Yahoo’s Dan Wolken suggests some of that outrage could be mitigated by taking a look at how college hockey seeds its postseason. “Though the formula has evolved over the years and is still evolving — more on that in a moment — the gist of it was to take the three factors the committee was supposed to consider and measure every team in the country by comparing them with every other team. All the selection committee does after the conference tournaments is plug in the six automatic bid winners and then take the 10 highest-rated teams from the formula to plug into the bracket. Sometimes there are necessary small seeding tweaks to deal with geography issues, but the committee has zero discretion when it comes to team selection. No mess, no controversy, no complaints.” Harvard Senior Assoc. AD/Men’s Ice Hockey Committee Chair Tim Troville tells Wolken it “certainly takes a lot of the pressure off. We like to be really open and transparent. Mathematically you’re in, or mathematically you’re out. It’s been really good for hockey.” This year, college hockey’s PairWise rankings are being replaced with the NCAA Power Index (NPI) in response to issues that have accumulated over the years, and while Troville notes the new formula will reward greater strength of schedule, he says other tweaks will be marginal, such as a slight decrease in the numerical value of an overtime win. Meanwhile, Wolken points out that “perhaps the best part is that fans (and coaching staffs) can play with the numbers online and know exactly how certain wins and losses will impact their team’s chances of getting in. For bubble teams, that means a lot of clicking the refresh button toward the end of the season and at the conference tournaments.” More. (link)

The Northeast Conference will retire the use of its full name and rebrand to simply “NEC.” Commissioner Noreen Morris: “The NEC’s transformation is fueled by the league’s long-standing foundation of passion, heart and perseverance. Sacramento State President Luke Wood during an appearance on the Montana-centric GrizFanPod: “We will be playing 2026 in the FBS, no matter what. The Reno-Sparks Convention & Visitors Authority announced a new NIL deal with Nevada, whereby Reno Tahoe will spend $242,500 on NIL deals “in an attempt to leverage the fame of top Wolf Pack athletes to promote tourism in Northern Nevada.” The RSCVA also has successfully submitted bids to host NCAA Regionals in cross country and men's golf in the last year and will attempt to bring NCAA Tournament basketball games to the region following the construction of the $435M arena at the Grand Sierra Resort, which held its ceremonial groundbreaking this week with an expected completion date in summer 2027. College Football TV viewership is up double digits thus far in 2025, reports Front Office Sports’ Eric Fisher, who notes Nielsen data shows the sport has grown 10.5% from 1.9M viewers per game over the first five weeks of last season to 2.1M over this year’s comparable period. Other highlights include a 15% lift in viewership among those aged 18 to 34 and six games that have reached an audience of 10M+. Last season at the time, only one game had achieved that mark. For all of 2025 to date, sports content has accounted for 22% of broadcast and cable viewing time among adults ages 25 to 54, despite that content representing 15% of the programming. Last year, including the Paris Olympics, the sports consumption figure was 19%. Nielsen SVP for Product Strategy & Thought Leadership Brian Fuhrer: “With everything else going on, people are definitely looking for that escape from live sports, and college football certainly has been a big part of that.” More. One year after Cal hosted ESPN College GameDay, The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner breaks down how the Bears are still benefiting. “On a practical level, it laid a vital footprint. The Bears have turned Memorial Glade into a gathering spot on game days. Oski’s Village, as the fan fest is called, features entertainment, food, drink and various levels of hospitality.” Chancellor Rich Lyons adds: “There was no center of gravity, and they created it. Most people associate that with Ground Zero for GameDay.” That morning also helped convince Ron Rivera to come aboard as GM, as he explains to Wilner: “It shows what our potential is. I had a great time and felt the energy, and it’s still there. People appreciate that we have gained momentum. Now, we need to follow through.” The Bears also recently announced a record fundraising haul of $82M for FY25, and Lyons notes: “It’s not 100% causal, but we began the last academic year with zero sports fully endowed, and it ended with five sports fully endowed. And we set an ambitious goal to do three more in each of the next three years. That’s 14, almost half of our varsity sports. I’m not saying GameDay triggered all of that, but a lot of people felt like Berkeley sees the value and importance of athletics, including for advancing its academic mission as a public research institution.” (link)

The ACC’s new on-air replay-audio experiment took center stage during Virginia’s upset of Florida State last week, a game that drew an average of 4.4M viewers. The Virginian-Pilot’s David Teel notes that six plays went to review, including FSU’s would-be TD in the second overtime, after which viewers heard the booth walk through slow-mo angles as they discussed what they were seeing. ACC Senior Assoc. Commissioner for Football Michael Strickland tells Teel: “We’ve been extraordinarily pleased with how this experiment has gone through five weeks of the season. It was important to us that this access experiment not interfere in any way with the replay officials doing their job. As we know, all of those folks are human, and so there will always be errors. However, the errors that have occurred this year (on replay) we do not attribute in any way to enhanced access. In fact, any errors that we’ve had occurred in games where there wasn’t enhanced access. … This access shows that they’re human, it shows that they’re prepared, it shows that there’s nothing untoward occurring. It’s just four people who love football and are trying to contribute to the game in as fair and successful a manner as they are humanly capable of doing.” More from Teel. (link)

According to a recent Pew Research Survey, 43% of U.S. adults believe the fact sports betting is now legal in much of the country is a bad thing for society with the Pew Research Center’s John Gramlich noting that number is up from 34% in 2022, while 40% of adults believe it’s also a bad thing for sports, up from 33%. In addition, many Americans continue to say it has neither a bad nor good impact on society and on sports, while fewer than one-in-five see any positive impact. Gramlich continues: “22% of adults say they’ve personally bet money on sports in the past year. That’s a slight uptick from 19% three years ago. [...] Some of the biggest shifts in attitudes about sports betting’s societal impact have come among young Americans – especially young men. Today, 47% of men under 30 say legal sports betting is a bad thing for society, up from 22% who said this in 2022. Women under 30 have also become more likely to express this view: 35% see legal sports betting as bad for society, up from 25% three years ago.” More. (link)
