The Robbins Perspective…
+ More from Arizona President Robbins, who says of the future of the Pac-12: “My prediction is that we’re all going to stay together as a Pac-12. There’s 10 of us right now. I’m hopeful that the deal is going to be good enough to keep us together. I think that’s the best thing for our students and alumni. That’s what we’re hoping for." (link)
+ Robbins also talks about the need for a federal NIL solution given the patchwork of state laws right now. “I think for a holistic comprehensive solution, it’s probably going to have to be the U.S. Congress. … I had not paid as much attention to the idea that there may be a federal agency for oversight of college sports. The advantage of that would be that they would have subpoena power and enforcement power.” Asked about the possibility of SEC Commissioner Sankey getting lawmakers and college officials to agree on a set of NIL rules within the league footprint, Robbins responds: “I like the idea. If anybody can do it, he probably can do it. It’s like running a 4.3 (40-yard-dash) in water. It’s going to be a big lift.” (link)
+ On the possibility of Arizona and Arizona State potentially joining different conferences, Robbins says: “We don’t have to do the same thing. But President Crow and I are very, very tight. I think it'd be unlikely that we'd be split up. … Right now, I think all 10 of us are solely focused on the deal. Once we have that, we have degrees of freedom to make informed decisions." (link)

As previously reported, USF is among six schools recently accepted into the Association of American Universities (AAU), and Crakes Media’s namesake tells the Tampa Bay Times’ Knight that “people don’t understand how important [being an AAU member] really is [in expansion discussions]. There are some schools that can’t play in the Big Ten, that the Big Ten isn’t going to add them ever because of that. That’s really important.” Coastal Carolina President Benson adds: “All you can do is make yourself better, improve your academic reputation. And I would argue that…the imprimatur of academic success, the gold standard for any research university, is the AAU. When I saw the list, I was like, ‘Good for USF. That’s fantastic.’” (link)

The Big Ten is set to reveal its football scheduling format today, and The Athletic’s Auerbach reports a “‘Flex Protect’ model in which league members have different numbers of permanent annual opponents is the frontrunner.” Specifically, Auerbach explains the Flex Protect model “would allow schools to play up to three protected annual opponents while cycling through the rest of the league’s schools over multiple years. … The format would allow schedule-makers the most flexibility to schedule with an eye toward competitive balance, home-and-away rotations and the specific challenges around West Coast travel for teams playing USC or UCLA, which join the Big Ten in 2024.” (link)

The Big 12 is exploring the possibility of starting a bowl game in Monterrey, Mexico, according to ESPN’s Thamel, who reports the game would begin following the 2026 season. The league previously announced it planned to establish a presence in Mexico, and to that end, Thamel notes the men's and women's basketball teams from both Kansas and Houston have agreed to play each other in a regular-season game in Mexico City in December 2024. Arkansas AD Yurachek is among those in Washington, D.C., this week, and he asserts that NIL inducements are “occurring everywhere,” adding: “Young men and women are making decisions not to go to Major League Baseball or the WNBA or the NBA because they can make more money in college. Does that make any sense, that you can make more money by staying in college than you can by going and being a professional athlete? That's where we have some issues in college athletics." Yurachek also announced men’s basketball season ticket prices will increase from $450 to $520 per seat in the lower level. It is the first price increase for Arkansas basketball tickets in several years. Among the projects at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium is the construction of two new suites in the Founders Area. The space will be called Big Red's Rooftop Bar, and Yurachek says: “We anticipate that being open on Friday nights when we light the stadium red. We'll have a live band up there and that can be a place where Razorback fans can come gather and get ready for Saturday's game. We're just trying to continue to provide more opportunities for Razorback fans to view the football games, baseball games and basketball games in a different setting." More from Yurachek. (link)

Alabama A&M AD Bryant talks with Fox54’s Carter about the decision to sign a deal to continue the Magic City Classic in Birmingham but not partner with the Alabama Sports Commission. “One of the things we want to do is make sure we get exactly what we deserve and what’s rightfully ours, and as we look at the contract, it just wasn’t what we wanted. So, as we read through and saw some of the particulars, we said, ‘Let’s come back to the table and reimagine how this classic can look.’ And when I say reimagine, we have a task force that is going to assist us in not only operating that type of classic, but all of our games on campus and off-campus.” Bryant also says AAMU is aligned with SWAC Commissioner McClelland’s vision for the league, including a possible move to FBS. “With the proper resources, and he wants to get us there, we will be there with him.” (link)

Oklahoma Softball HC Gasso tells her players to be “unapologetic” for the way they play the game, including the way they celebrate after getting hits – or even walks. "Because women have worked so hard to get here yet still get judged for those things. That's the way we play, and that's what people enjoy. Or you don't. You either like it or you don't, but we're not going to apologize for these players knowing the game and celebrating the right way." Sooners center fielder Coleman acknowledges the team has seen some criticism on social media but tells ESPN’s Scarborough: “I really don’t get it. I feel like we are continuously -- and softball itself -- are just breaking barriers. I've seen it with my own eyes, and I feel like it's just very disappointing to just see people just trying to tear us down in that type of way. Maybe not tearing us down, but just kind of making it into a negative light when you're seeing the MLB players do the exact same thing or the NBA or NFL, throwing their helmets and having emotion.” The Sooners won Game 1 of the WCWS championship series last night against Florida State, 5-0. The Georgia Tech Athletic Association discussed its proposed final budget for FY24, which The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Bishop reports is estimated to be between $124-128M, the largest in the department's history. However, Bishop notes the “budget was neither voted on nor approved because the University System of Georgia delayed its budgeting process a month.” The board is expected to reconvene later this month to approve the budget. The Atlantic 10 approved a 2023-24 budget during its annual June Business Meeting and approved a $1.5M supplemental financial distribution for each member institution. The council also conducted an “in-depth conversation regarding the student-athlete transfer portal, mental health initiatives, the DEI work of the A-10 Commission on Racial Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and the potential perils of legalized sports gambling in college athletics. The discussions also reviewed the NCAA directive to increase the voice of student-athletes in conference decision-making meetings.” Additionally, Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. and Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., were reviewed as the sites of the 2024 and 2025 men’s basketball championship. The meeting also included an appearance from NCAA President Baker, who briefed the Council and Athletic Directors on important priorities related to NIL, student-athlete welfare, mental health and future goals of the association. During the Big South’s spring meetings, conference CEOs supported efforts to secure a neutral site location for the 2024 Basketball Championships, with a determination to be made by June 13. Should a site not come to fruition at that time, the CEOs approved the one-year format of home sites/highest seeds for 2024 The league will continue its exploration for a single site tournament for 2025 and beyond. Campus presidents, chancellors and ADs also approved the creation of a Working Group Task Force to further study men’s and women’s basketball over the next year and analyze if the conference’s current Strategic Plan needs revision as it relates to scheduling, facility enhancements, and tactics. + The Jacksonville Jaguars have released initial renderings for a proposed large-scale revamp of TIAA Bank Stadium, also home of the annual Georgia-Florida football game. The project could cost upwards of $2B when development around the stadium is taken into account. Auburn AD Cohen will make $1.598M during his first year at Auburn, a $500K increase from the $1.1M he was making at Mississippi State, per the Opelika-Auburn News’ Cole, who reports Cohen’s salary will increase incrementally to $2.098M in its fifth and final year. Should Cohen be terminated without cause, he would be owed 70% of his remaining contract, not subject to mitigation. That figure decreases to 60% should Cohen “become unable to perform the essential functions of his job” due to disability, according to Cole. (link)

Baylor AD Rhoades addresses reports there is resistance among Big 12 ADs to basketball-driven expansion. “I would say that using the word resistance, or saying there is resistance to (adding UConn or Gonzaga), I would say that is stepping over the line, that is inaccurate. We didn’t come out of the meetings with any definitive decisions of including or excluding any one particular institution. As the whole world knows, we did have a conversation but I would say that there was robust discussion about a lot of different institutions. I certainly didn’t walk away feeling like we had made any decision about excluding anyone. … I’m not saying [The Oklahoman’s] Berry Tramel misreported this at all, because I’ve got great respect for him. But, I would say whatever he was told is a bit of a misrepresentation.” (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous founder reports current Pac-12 schools “have finalized the terms of their Grant of Rights.” A member of the Pac-12 CEO Group tells Canzano that “over the last few months, we have negotiated all of these issues and the Grant of Rights is ready to go.” The length of the GOR will be determined by the duration of the league’s media rights deal, but Canzano is told “all 10 schools are ready to sign the Grant of Rights once the media deal is concluded to their satisfaction.” As far as what the GOR specifies, Canzano notes it “includes equal revenue sharing on the media-rights front, per a source, but incentivized sharing of postseason revenue when it comes to the College Football Playoff. Under the agreement, NCAA Tournament shares would still be distributed equally.” As of now, San Diego State’s June 30 deadline is not being treated as a priority, but “SDSU is being told by the Pac-12 that the conference ‘feels good’ about the impending media deal and is just ‘trying to wrap things up,’ per an Aztecs source. Stay tuned on this front.” More from Canzano. (link)

Arizona President Robbins “stresses that Pac-12 presidents haven't seen numbers yet on the upcoming TV deal,” per ESPN’s Thamel. Robbins: "(Until we) see a working document that gives us numbers.... that’s what we don’t have. Until we have it, no one can make an informed decision.” Robbins adds: “I've seen forecasts and projections. … I do think there's good data on what they Pac-12 is valued at. I've seen those numbers. If we get close to those numbers, I think we'll be fine. … We're not going to get a Big Ten deal or an SEC deal....if we win a bronze medal I think we'll all declare victory and move on." (link); Robbins tells SEC Network’s Finebaum he has always been confident the league would reach a deal “and then the question will be do we retain the name Pac-12 and add a couple of schools or do we go back to the Pac-10 like it was when I arrived at Stanford in 1989?” Robbins believes a deal will be presented in a “matter of weeks” but acknowledges he’s been wrong before. Indiana State AD Clinkscales says the decision to withdraw its bid to host a baseball super regional was “excruciating,” but “I did not believe we could host exceptional events for both the Special Olympics and the ISU baseball team that both programs deserve.” Due to facilities and staffing conflicts, the super regional will be held at TCU, and Clinkscales says he never requested the Special Olympics change any arrangements. “Our student-athletes earned the right (to host the series). I made the tough decision and said, 'We cannot do it the right way,’ and that's why that tough decision was made." (link); Meanwhile, TCU fans have stepped up by helping to garner over $23K in donations to Special Olympics Indiana in light of ISU’s decision not to host. Special Olympics CEO Mohler: “Sports at its truest. The most fundamental part of our society is for the betterment of who we are as individuals and this is a testimony to that, what sports could and should be. It is more than competition, although we do like to keep score, obviously the scoreboard is on, but we can all be better for it, if we live it in the right spirit." Our hats are off to Horned Frogs fans. (link)

I have forbid him from getting on motorcycles by the way.” (link)

+ On3 VP for Editorial/Senior Writer Maisel announces he will step aside: “I joined On3 at its inception two years ago because I believed in Shannon Terry’s vision. I still do. [...] As a journalist, after 42 years, the last 36 covering a sport that has enthralled me from my earliest memory, I am taking a step back. The editor in my head, the voice that I entrust to deliver the right nouns and verbs, is telling me it’s time. I don’t see myself retiring. I have more to write. But I want to write when I want to write, spend more time with my wife and daughters, and maybe even catch a college football game from the stands. I’ll be around.” (link)

On3’s Nakos sheds a little more light on who’s on tap as coaches, collective leaders and others converge on Capitol Hill this week, noting each school’s envoy will meet with its respective federal delegation. Additionally, Alabama Football HC Saban is slated to meet with House Majority Leader Scalise (R-LA), and Mississippi State President Keenum will meet with U.S. Senator Blackburn (R-TN), an MSU alumna. U.S. Senator Tuberville (R-AL) remarks: “Today we are meeting with coaches, athletic directors and administrators from several different conferences here in Washington, D.C., talking about the disastrous new NIL rules. And they are a disaster.” Tuberville expressed support for the compensation of student-athletes but questioned the transfer portal. “We have to come to some kind of agreement where we can help the NCAA make improvements to this runaway NIL situation that we're in as we speak. Players transferring at any time? Players making deals with the help of agents with schools and then not being compensated after making these deals? We're looking out for the player as much as for the university. But we're looking out for education and we're looking out for the sanctity of college sports. We want to make sure we can continue to afford women's athletics as well as men's athletics. … We will not graduate as many students through education.” Tuberville also says he and U.S. Senator Manchin (D-WV) have finished the text of their bill but will continue to make improvements. (link)
|
Former Clemson football student-athlete Falcinelli, who serves as a member of the CFBPA’s leadership committee, tells On3’s Nakos that “all current players should boycott [EA Sports’ NIL] deal. It is an opt-in deal, and they should not opt into it. It is just a ridiculously low amount of money. … [I] started talking to guys, talked to some of my friends, some guys who are still playing in the NFL. ‘So, what are NFL players getting paid for Madden?’ And the numbers we were given were from 2019, it was disclosed that they got, I think, about $17K. And then a current NFL player told us that he got a check for $28,000 this year for Madden. You should not participate in this. It is a simple cash grab to just try to get you for the lowest amount possible. And it’s OneTeam Partners and all these organizations that don’t really represent the players’ best interest.” More. Iowa and Virginia Tech will start their women’s hoops seasons with a neutral site at the Ally Tipoff on November 9 at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte. (link, link); Ally Financial Head of Sports and Entertainment Marketing Marciano says the decision to sponsor was an easy one to make. “It’s perfectly aligned with our sports strategy to continue to drive, access and invest in access for women’s sports. The fact that they also had Virginia Tech, the ACC champs, playing in the game with our partnership with the ACC, there’s a perfect alignment there. Obviously, we have a national strategy around women’s sports right now to impact the entire landscape for women’s sports, and we are doing that every single day.” Beyond that, Marciano remarks: “I don’t know if anything’s hotter than women’s college basketball right now, in terms of the numbers they’re delivering. This is a tremendously good business right now for everybody involved in women’s sports and women’s basketball.” (link)
