CACC Commissioner Dan Mara sits down with College.town’s Anthony Grassi at the 2025 NACDA Convention to discuss the state and position of the conference. On the state of the conference: “We're united. We're strong together. We have a lot of young ADs who have a lot of energy and a lot of great ideas. I think we're performing as well as, or better than, we ever have on the regional and national level. Clearly, the impact of the enrollment cliff and the changes in higher education have had an impact on our conference. We've had mergers. We've had closings. We've had schools come to us. We haven't had anybody leave us. We haven't had a school leave our conference as long as I've been commissioner. We’ve had schools closed, but we never had anybody purposefully go to another conference. So to me, that says we're doing the right things.” Asked about DII issues that are most important for the league: “We are big believers in the regional concept of Division II. We think that that serves us best. […] There are certainly many changes that can be made, of course. Do I think they should be made? I would say no. We are very pleased with where we are, and I think if you were to talk to the other commissioners in the east, we would probably be pretty solid on that. I know other parts of the country where they're looking for more of a national championship format. I'm sure they are interested in that, but we enjoy our regional competition. We're focused on being the best in that 30-team grouping. And then once we get out of that, that's when we are focused on a national championship. ➤ Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger reports leaders of 31 of the 32 Division I conferences are expected to send Congress a letter today in support of the SCORE Act with the Ivy League not expected to sign. From the letter: “We believe we are on common ground not just among each other, but with members of both parties in Congress as well as the American public in our desire to have college sports return to a state of stability. We believe this because our model produces class upon class of citizens and leaders, in many cases to student-athletes who but for their athletics ability would not be able to attend college. In addition, funding and training provided by our institutions is the primary source for the U.S. Olympic pipeline. We urge you to pass the SCORE Act and look forward to continuing to work with you to develop and secure legislation that best serves the long-term interests of college sports.” Full letter. (link)

➤ At yesterday's Knight Commission meeting, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA), co-sponsor of the SAFE Act, was asked whether she would be in favor of limitations on coaching salaries and responded: "I’m all for coaching limitations." NCAA SVP of External Affairs Tim Buckley noted the NCAA would be willing to listen to Congress about federal legislation that would cap spending on non-athlete expenses (ie, coaching salaries), according to Tulane Sports Law Director Gabe Feldman. Texas A&M-Kingsville students have approved an athletic fee increase from $20 per semester credit hour to $35, starting fall 2026 for new and transfer students. All current students will not pay the increased fee price, and the fee will be capped at 13 credit hours. The Javelinas say the new funding will support scholarships, facilities and the student experience. (link, link)

Barton will rename the court at Wilson Gymnasium after retired Men’s Basketball HC Ron Lievense and has launched a fundraising campaign to endow the HC position. (link)

After a crash involving the Montana State Billings Cross Country team that injured six student-athletes, the department will temporarily pause coaches and student-athletes driving university vehicles during team trips. The Yellowjackets will use professional transportation companies while they review current travel policies. (link)

Washington (DI) football student-athlete Jacob Manu has joined many others in filing a lawsuit challenging the NCAA's eligibility rules. Boise State professor Sam Ehrlich: “He is challenging the Redshirt and Four Seasons Rules, seeking to play a fifth season within his overall Five Year Clock. As with (most of) the others, Manu's challenge is an antitrust claim, arguing in part that the redshirt rule limit of four games (plus playoff games) arbitrarily deprives the best players of their potential highest earning years.” (link)

Mount Olive Women’s Flag Football HC Eric James has resigned after accusations came forward that he sexually assaulted multiple female students, including raping a 17-year-old student earlier this month. AD Joey Higginbotham in a statement earlier this week: “The University of Mount Olive has received complaints regarding Women’s Flag Football Coach Eric James, and the University can confirm that Coach James is no longer employed at the University. UMO holds its employees to high standards and expects all faculty and staff to uphold the University’s covenant. A closed-door meeting with the involved parties will be held this evening to discuss next steps. As this is a personnel matter, no further comment can be provided at this time. The University will begin an immediate search for a new women’s flag football coach.” (link)

College presidents are under mounting pressure amid federal scrutiny, waning public trust, AI uncertainty, and shorter tenures, so aspiring leaders are increasingly turning to senior-administrator training programs, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education’s David Jesse. The Council of Independent Colleges’ (CIC) Presidential Vocation and Institutional Mission program, for instance, helps candidates discern whether they’re truly “called” to the presidency and what institutional fit suits them. Augustana (DIII) President Emeritus Steven C. Bahls, director of the program: “We think prospective college presidents are more introspective at this time. In other words, a provost 10 years ago might have thought that a college president was a logical next step. Many of those are asking, ‘Is this really a logical next step? I need to explore whether this is within my calling, because they’ve seen the challenges of the job.’” When choosing which programs are best, Jesse points to those which bring in sitting administrators, attendees said, or send participants out to a campus to observe rather than those that focus on case studies. Toledo (DI) professor Robert A. Schultz explains that relying on case studies ignores the time constraints and the messiness of human nature that make leadership so challenging. “The business of dealing with people is messy because humans are humans. Until you’re in the mix of dealing with all the human interactions, both positive, negative, and neutral, you don’t understand, and you can’t get a reading on how to understand what’s going on.” CIC President Marjorie Hass compares successful training to learning to play jazz, which requires technical proficiency but also the ability to improvise. “There are skills you need in order to do it, but it is also very much an art.
