Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger provides the exact language of the commercial logo proposal to permit schools to outfit player jerseys with sponsorship patches, noting it “also includes the potential for logos on officials' uniforms as well. A key note: ‘all non-NCAA championship competition’ only.” Full proposal language. (link)

Weatherford Capital Founding Partner Drew Weatherford joins the Navigating Sports Business podcast with Navigate founder AJ Maestas to discuss the role of private equity in college sports and explains: “The way we're investing, I would view it as bridge capital. Just to be clear, we're not taking equity in any of the universities or any of the opportunities that we're looking at currently. I do think there’s likely going to be opportunities in the future to do so. Our financial instrument today is no different than going to a bank and getting a loan. It's just way more flexible and way more long-term than a traditional loan would be. I am of the opinion that legal issues are going to continue to plague college athletics. I'm not certain that they're going to get anything done in D.C. I think it's 50-50. If Congress ends up giving them protection, this could perpetuate. If they don't, the legal liability is going to be pretty significant for these universities. And I think there's a greater likelihood for things to reorganize and for universities to privatize…and separate themselves from the NCAA if Congress doesn't help in some way, shape, or form.” How much is a major Big Ten or SEC athletic department worth? “They're all north of a billion dollars.” More. While Maverick Carter, the longtime business partner of Lebron James, says he is no longer involved in any discussions to bring the global professional basketball league, dubbed “Project B,” to the marketplace, the effort continues to have financial backing from some huge sports & technology industry names from around the globe. Sequence Equity, which has been in the news lately for its proposal to privatize the FCS Playoffs, says its investment into Project B is “our biggest investment to date.” (link)

Amid a torrent of reports describing the North Carolina football program as in a state of disarray, Tar Heels AD Bubba Cunningham and HC Bill Belichick released statements, with Cunningham indicating Belichick “has the full support of the Department of Athletics and University.” Belichick added that he is “fully committed to UNC Football and the program we’re building here.” (link)

Tennessee AD Danny White says football season ticket renewals “are going great again. I think that's a byproduct of the demand. People know that it's going to be really hard to get back in if you don't renew. But the biggest is just the passion of Vol Nation. We have the best fan base in all of sport, in my opinion, and the way they support our football team and fill Neyland Stadium on a consistent basis, it's just awesome." White was also asked whether he will look to avoid neutral-site games in the future given how coveted home games will be with the new nine-game SEC schedule and says: "Yeah, that's my goal, and we'll see. We'll see if we're successful. But that's our intention, and we had been looking at through the Washington series, which is as far out as we are on the books, and we've been kind of in a little bit of a holding pattern, waiting until everything got finalized with the SEC schedule. But our goal is, through Washington, we have it set up that way, where, when we only have four SEC games at home, we are supplementing it with the fifth home game with a power conference opponent. And so as we build on that past the Washington series, that's our goal, to keep it that way." (link)

More from Colorado State AD John Weber’s sitdown with Loyola Marymount AD Craig Pintens on CRO.ticker’s Margins of Victory podcast, where Weber notes the athletic department’s vision is to become the “most loved, most watched, most innovative program in the West. … On the most innovative side, some of the finances come into play,” such as “how do we find sources of revenue to help us achieve the goals that we want? But it also comes down to consumption of technology…how well are we feeding our athletes? What does our nutrition program look like?” Weber adds: “What are we going to do to not only compete but win when we’ve got an opportunity on the national stage? … When we talk about five years from now, I’ve already mentioned we desire to compete at the highest level. So the desire is that, in the next five years, we will have played a CFP game. We will have made it to a Sweet 16. That’s the thing that I talk to all of our coaches about: nothing moves the value of Colorado State athletics more than competing on the national stage and winning when we get there. And that’s our focus—getting there in the first place, winning conference championships to enable that opportunity, and then win when we get there is the goal.” Full podcast. (link)

SBJ’s Terry Lefton examines the context in which the Heisman Trophy Trust named Jeff Price as its first-ever CEO and notes the organization itself acknowledged it was looking for “greater levels of philanthropic impact by driving new revenue growth.” Price’s overall charge will be to expand commercial partnerships (beyond stalwarts Nissan and ESPN), make the Heisman more culturally relevant, and bring sales/marketing in-house rather than relying on outside agencies. The board says the sport’s transformation makes this the right moment to do more. Asked how soon a Heisman-themed golf tournament will be in the works, Price says: “There’s a lot on our plate as far as figuring out our best commercial opportunities, but I’d still classify that as low-hanging fruit.” The trust’s revenue fell from $11.6M in 2022 to $10.2 in 2023, and its net income dropped from $6.13M to $4.12M. Net assets increased during that same time period from $45.34M to $49.47M. (link)

William & Mary has named Larry Pulley, former longtime dean of W&M's Raymond A. Mason School of Business, as Interim GM for the next year. In addition to other duties, Pulley will be tasked with helping develop the position description for the future GM. Tribe AD Brian Mann: "Larry, for years, has been a strong supporter of Tribe Athletics, and his business acumen coupled with his knowledge of business analytics will greatly help us in this new world of college sports. As he starts his GM duties, he will be spending much of his time during the next 3-4 months with our basketball programs to help them build off last year's successful seasons, but each of our teams will have the opportunity to work with Larry and benefit from his great experience and insight.” (link)

Extra Points’ Matt Brown provides contract details for the “Montana State/North Dakota State 2027 Las Vegas game (via ESPN Events),” noting there’s a “healthy participation fee. Also specific dates could change, depending on what the NFL does with Labor Day.” From the contract, EPI will pay each participating school $1.25M within 30 days following the event. Additionally, once local ticket sales reach the $3.3M mark net, EPI and each school will share an equal third of net ticket revenue. If the event is canceled, neither the fee, nor additional revenue, would be due. Also, if the NFL moves its opening week to Labor Day weekend and/or the college football season moves its season start to week zero, the parties “agree to good faith conversations about adjusting the dates as appropriate” with exact time to be determined by EPI and broadcast slated for a nationally distributed ESPN-owned or operated network. The College Sports Commission has launched its anonymous tipline in partnership with RealResponse. CSC CEO Bryan Seeley: “This anonymous tipline provides an essential tool for identifying potential rules violations, gathering additional information and ultimately enforcing these new rules. We’re committed to robust enforcement of the rules while protecting those who come forward with useful information.” RealResponse Founder and CEO David Chadwick: “With the House settlement reshaping the college sports landscape, new opportunities and challenges have emerged, making integrity and accountability more important than ever. This partnership ensures there is a safe, trusted channel to report potential rules violations. We’re proud to help the CSC protect fairness, maintain a level playing field, and give every stakeholder the confidence to speak up when rules are at risk of being broken.” (link)

More from Seeley to the AP’s Eddie Pells: “There are some deals that are submitted to NIL Go, certainly a minority of deals, that are problematic. They either have errors in data entry, or indicators of (forbidden) pay for play. There is heightened review of those deals and heightened review takes time. That is not a bug in the system. That’s a feature of the system.” (link)

The Division I Administrative Committee adopts a proposal permitting student-athletes and athletics department staff to bet on professional sports. The rule change must be approved by all three NCAA divisions with Division II and III expected to consider the proposal during their respective October meetings. If approved, the rule would then go into effect on Nov. 1. The NCAA’s prohibition on collegiate sports betting, and sharing information about college competitions with other bettors, remains in place with the committee also noting the action is not an endorsement of sports betting, particularly for student-athletes. The rule change was also supported by the Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, which requested that the change come with continued and enhanced education and support for college athletes to prevent problem gambling among student-athletes. (link)
|
Kansas State AD Gene Taylor reacts to the NCAA Administrative Committee’s vote to remove restrictions on student-athlete and staff pro sports gambling by remarking: “What are we thinking? This makes no sense to me. Let’s hope the leadership at DII and DIII think this through a lot more and vote not to pass this.” (link)
|
The DI Administrative Committee has also introduced a proposal that would modify rules for commercial logos on student-athletes' equipment, uniforms and apparel for non-NCAA championship competition. Under existing rules, the only commercial logo permitted on student-athletes' equipment or apparel during regular-season games is the logo of the equipment or apparel manufacturer. If the proposal is adopted, schools could place two additional commercial logos on uniforms and pregame/postgame apparel during non-NCAA championship competition. Furthermore, one additional commercial logo would be permitted on equipment used by student-athletes. The committee directed the playing rules committees and subcommittees to review the proposal and make sport-specific recommendations on national standards for placement of commercial logos. A final proposal is expected to be considered for a final vote in January. If adopted in January, rules changes for apparel and equipment would be effective August 1. The Administrative Committee also renamed itself and will be known moving forward as the Division I Cabinet. (link)

Stanford has received a $50M gift from former Cardinal football student-athlete and longtime major donor Bradford M. Freeman, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, who notes its the largest individual gift in Stanford football history outside of facilities and an unusually large one for an individual program as most donations of that value are normally tied to buildings or facilities. In honor of Freeman’s gift, both a Stanford Stadium tunnel and gate will be named in his honor. (link)

Despite the addition of up to $20.5M in new expenses, coaches’ salaries continue to increase, and USA Today’s Brent Schrotenboer, Steve Berkowitz and John Heasly wonder where the money is coming from. In Colorado’s case, the answer is “TBD.” The trio writes: “USA Today Sports has submitted several requests to Colorado since May for records that show the athletic department’s revenue and expense estimates for the current fiscal year. In response, Colorado said it didn’t have documents responsive to these requests. The university then provided a document on September 10 that shows estimated expenses for the current fiscal year at $164.9M, about $24M more than the estimated expenses for fiscal year 2025 and $27M more than fiscal 2024. Most of that increase can be attributed to football expenses and the new $20.5M cost for players…but Colorado said it doesn’t have anything to provide in writing that spells out where it’s getting the money to pay for that and [Football HC Deion] Sanders’ new contract.” CU in a statement: “Due to new opportunities presented by the House settlement, the budget for FY26 has required extensive conversations with our campus partners as well as our Board of Regents. CU Athletics is preparing for House implementation with a singular focus on revenue generation, which includes donations, multi-media rights, outside events and other sources, particularly the immense ancillary benefits the university receives thanks to head football coach Deion Sanders.” (link)

Is Georgia ready to strike a sponsorship deal for on-field logos between the hedges at Sanford Stadium? According to The Athens Banner-Herald’s Marc Weiszer, the answer appears to be yes. UGA Senior Assoc. AD for Marketing and Revenue Strategy Alan Thomas: “I don’t think there’s any doubt you’re going to see it in the future. The question is when will that be, who will that be? That is really all going to be determined by what becomes the right value and who the right partner is to structure the right deal.” Thomas says Georgia has a list of “potential partners” that would be a good fit for a football corporate on-field logo he envisions would go on the 25-yard line opposite the SEC logo. He also adds that such a deal could be tied into a more expansive deal to include radio advertisements and other venue signage, while estimating other current league deals could range from the “mid- to high-six figures and some places could be low seven figures,” annually. Nebraska Women’s Volleyball is set to reseat John Cook Arena, per On SI’s Lincoln Arneal. Arneal: “Renewal rates for season tickets are at 99%, which is practically unheard of in the industry. Only 20 people came off the wait list each year (when seats weren’t added), which left many interested individuals to turn to the secondary market. Athletic Department officials mentioned that families and younger fans are currently left out. … The reseat will also help generate more revenue for the Athletic Department. Currently, volleyball tickets and tied-in donations generate $4.5Min revenue. The expanded capacity and new donation levels are expected to generate around $8M, excluding increased general donations that individuals will make to enhance their donor rank. [...] With the reseat happening for the 2026 season, the process will move along quickly. In November, they plan to reveal the final design as well as the price level and donation levels for each seat. The Husker Athletic Fund donor level will lock on March 18, 2026. Donors and season ticket holders will be informed … of their selection date and time in April 2026. The actual seat selection process will start on June 8 and last until mid-July.” (link)
