Oklahoma State President Jim Hess cleared up any questions about OSU AD Chad Weiberg’s future in Stillwater, remarking: “Mr. Weiberg will be our athletic director. I think there's been a lot of questions about that over the summer. Mr. Weiberg will be our athletic director. And I've said it all during the summer that I would deal with it in due time. We had lots of other challenges, as I know and you know. I wanted to address those directly, but Mr. Weiberg will be our athletic director.” Per Tulsa World’s Eric Bailey, the OSU Board of Regents will have an opportunity to take up specifics and approve a new deal for Weiberg, who has been working without a contract since his deal lapsed July 30, when they meet Oct. 24. Hess: “OSU is absolutely committed to athletic success. Many people describe it as the front door to the university. We're absolutely committed to being successful in our conference and nationally.” (link)

More than three months after the SEC signed a “membership” or “participation agreement” meant to coalesce power conference schools in a formal alliance under House settlement terms, no other league has joined them. Per Ross Dellenger for On3, the reason why is complicated as a “new version of the agreement has recently emerged from a Washington D.C.-based law firm, and the document is in the midst of final revisions from power conference executives (the SEC must sign again, as the original has undergone changes and was only contingent on other leagues signing). [...] Big Ten officials are opposed to agreeing to such a legal document if the College Sports Commission has the authority to apply a postseason ban as a penalty.” One Power 4 AD from outside the Big Ten remarked: “Everybody is saying we need to have rules. Unless there are significant consequences, how do we enforce these rules? We are once again in a no-man’s land because of the inaction of one of our conferences. That’s not healthy for the sustainability of college athletics.” Dellenger continues: “The delay in signing the agreement is causing problems, as it also puts new penalties and their enforcement in limbo. [...] It seems likely that either (1) the Big Ten strikes a compromise over the postseason-ban penalty and signs or (2) the new version of the document is not signed by anyone and, likely, lawsuits continue to be filed against any enforcement.” More. Speaking at Big Ten Men’s Basketball Media Day, Commissioner Tony Petitti had this to say on the subject of private capital: “Whether or not we decide to take to a strategic investment (to modernize our conference) is what we're considering, with the goal of continuing to grow opportunities for student-athletes.” NBC’s Nicole Auerbach notes “Petitti says it is one potential avenue for the league to take, and it’ll be a decision made by all 18 conference members.” (link)

At today’s Knight Commission meeting, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA), co-sponsor of the SAFE Act, was asked whether she would be in favor of limitations on coaching salaries and responded: "I’m all for coaching limitations." NCAA SVP of External Affairs Tim Buckley noted the NCAA would be willing to listen to Congress about federal legislation that would cap spending on non-athlete expenses (ie, coaching salaries), according to Tulane Sports Law Director Gabe Feldman. ESPN’s Dan Murphy adds that Cantwell was “not a fan of the Big Ten's proposed private equity play” and suggested “it could threaten the tax-exempt status of those schools.” Cantwell: "You’re going to let someone take and monetize what is really a public resource? … That's a real problem." More coming from the meeting. (link, link)

ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips and Louisville AD Josh Heird both believe federal regulation is needed in college sports. Per the Courier Journal’s Payton Titus, Phillips prefers the SCORE Act with his league having recently submitted a letter to Congress supporting the bill. Phillips: “If it's not the SCORE Act or something similar, then we have real issues. Because we are still unsettled in this area, and we need stabilization, and we also need to continue to modernize and have something that's sustainable.” Heird has spent a lot of time trying to explain the “need” for federal intervention to Washington D.C.’s Kentucky delegation, remarking: “Why is Congress getting involved in college athletics? There's all these things going on in the world, (and) Congress is going to spend their time on this? And I would answer that with, Congress doesn't get involved in anything, for the most part, until they feel like they need to. And I do believe that we're at that point. We literally just turned that (traditional) model on its head with NIL ... And that's where universities and athletic departments are saying, quite honestly, ‘What's the new model now?’” More. (link)

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports “West Virginia is going to add 140 new athletic scholarships starting in the 2026-27 season, including 16 new football scholarships and 124 in Olympic sports. WVU's Board of Governors voted in September to be among the top funded schools in the Big 12. This move is a by-product of that Board of Governors plan. The total scholarship number at WVU will rise to 400 from 260 over its 18 sports.” (link)

Western Michigan’s first Men’s Ice Hockey national championship this past April was born out of AD Dan Bartholomae’s original message about the Broncos’ athletics department needing to think big writes ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, who notes WMU is the overwhelming No. 1 team in the country entering this season, as they try to become the first team to capture consecutive national titles since Minnesota-Duluth in 2019. WMU President Russ Kalvahuna: “There's nothing more exciting than a national championship for a regional university like us. The story of a regional university is always thinking you might have a chance, but learning you don't. And that's what this team completely demolished for all of us.” Rittenberg continues: “The Broncos were honored on the field at Comerica Park and Ford Field in Detroit, and at Wrigley Field in Chicago. They got the key to the city in Kalamazoo, and receive congratulations whenever they go around town in their WMU gear.” As a result of the title, “the Broncos are accessing higher-level recruits, but since the hockey prospect cycle goes several years out, the benefit of the championship -- and the new [Kalamazoo Event Center] arena -- might not fully be felt for another year or two.’ For his part, Bartholomae expects WMU to be “a mainstay in the Frozen Four.” More. LSU has already inked a multimillion-dollar jersey patch sponsor deal, even prior to the NCAA’s final approval of a new proposal permitting commercial logos on uniforms, reports Front Office Sports’ David Rumsey, with LSU Deputy AD/CRO Clay Harris adding: “We’ve mapped it out—it’ll be on all of our uniforms, every sport.” Harris is “very confident” the measure will be approved, which is why he says his team has been working on the implementation of jersey patch sponsors for the past 12 months. If the deal comes to fruition, the Tigers would be the first known program to have an agreement in place. Per Rumsey, Harris wouldn’t cite the company or how much they’ve agreed to pay, but speculated "the Tigers can “rival some of the top pro sports teams” in jersey patch dollars. Harris: “The value of an LSU or another big brand in college sports, across all sports, could come close to what a pro sports team is getting. We went through a very extensive process on the valuation piece, because we wanted to make sure we got that right. We did some internal studies—we started with pro sports and had a pretty good idea of what pro sports patches were going for. And so we based it off of that.” (link)

Arkansas Men’s Basketball is the latest to invest in a version of student-athlete health insurance, dubbed “booster insurance” in Fayetteville, per ESPN’s Dan Wetzel. Insert 32 Group, a firm co-founded by Travis Long, who previously played for Hogs HC John Calipari at Memphis & is offering insurance on the health of Arkansas’ players for what’s effectively just 3% of an NIL/revenue share deal. Wetzel: “For example, if a player is being paid $1M, ‘Arkansas’ will pay $30K for the insurance. If that player is lost to season-ending injury before Jan. 15, whatever entity is giving the $1M (school, collective or business) will be paid back in full (the athlete will have already collected or will continue to get their money as spelled out in the contract). If the player goes down from Jan. 15 to Feb. 15, the policy will return 50%. That way, should a player be lost, the school, booster or business won't feel as if their money were just torched.” More. That number also includes over $450K received from 1,016 gifts as part of the annual, 24-hour Mason Vision Day campaign. Weatherford Capital Founding Partner Drew Weatherford joins the Navigating Sports Business podcast with Navigate founder AJ Maestas to discuss the role of private equity in college sports and explains: “The way we're investing, I would view it as bridge capital. Just to be clear, we're not taking equity in any of the universities or any of the opportunities that we're looking at currently. I do think there’s likely going to be opportunities in the future to do so. Our financial instrument today is no different than going to a bank and getting a loan. It's just way more flexible and way more long-term than a traditional loan would be. I am of the opinion that legal issues are going to continue to plague college athletics. I'm not certain that they're going to get anything done in D.C. I think it's 50-50. If Congress ends up giving them protection, this could perpetuate. If they don't, the legal liability is going to be pretty significant for these universities. And I think there's a greater likelihood for things to reorganize and for universities to privatize…and separate themselves from the NCAA if Congress doesn't help in some way, shape, or form.” How much is a major Big Ten or SEC athletic department worth? “They're all north of a billion dollars.” More. Tennessee AD Danny White says football season ticket renewals “are going great again. I think that's a byproduct of the demand. People know that it's going to be really hard to get back in if you don't renew. But the biggest is just the passion of Vol Nation. We have the best fan base in all of sport, in my opinion, and the way they support our football team and fill Neyland Stadium on a consistent basis, it's just awesome." White was also asked whether he will look to avoid neutral-site games in the future given how coveted home games will be with the new nine-game SEC schedule and says: "Yeah, that's my goal, and we'll see. We'll see if we're successful. But that's our intention, and we had been looking at through the Washington series, which is as far out as we are on the books, and we've been kind of in a little bit of a holding pattern, waiting until everything got finalized with the SEC schedule. But our goal is, through Washington, we have it set up that way, where, when we only have four SEC games at home, we are supplementing it with the fifth home game with a power conference opponent. And so as we build on that past the Washington series, that's our goal, to keep it that way." (link)

More from Colorado State AD John Weber’s sitdown with Loyola Marymount AD Craig Pintens on CRO.ticker’s Margins of Victory podcast, where Weber notes the athletic department’s vision is to become the “most loved, most watched, most innovative program in the West. … On the most innovative side, some of the finances come into play,” such as “how do we find sources of revenue to help us achieve the goals that we want? But it also comes down to consumption of technology…how well are we feeding our athletes? What does our nutrition program look like?” Weber adds: “What are we going to do to not only compete but win when we’ve got an opportunity on the national stage? … When we talk about five years from now, I’ve already mentioned we desire to compete at the highest level. So the desire is that, in the next five years, we will have played a CFP game. We will have made it to a Sweet 16. That’s the thing that I talk to all of our coaches about: nothing moves the value of Colorado State athletics more than competing on the national stage and winning when we get there. And that’s our focus—getting there in the first place, winning conference championships to enable that opportunity, and then win when we get there is the goal.” Full podcast. (link)

SBJ’s Terry Lefton examines the context in which the Heisman Trophy Trust named Jeff Price as its first-ever CEO and notes the organization itself acknowledged it was looking for “greater levels of philanthropic impact by driving new revenue growth.” Price’s overall charge will be to expand commercial partnerships (beyond stalwarts Nissan and ESPN), make the Heisman more culturally relevant, and bring sales/marketing in-house rather than relying on outside agencies. The board says the sport’s transformation makes this the right moment to do more. Asked how soon a Heisman-themed golf tournament will be in the works, Price says: “There’s a lot on our plate as far as figuring out our best commercial opportunities, but I’d still classify that as low-hanging fruit.” The trust’s revenue fell from $11.6M in 2022 to $10.2 in 2023, and its net income dropped from $6.13M to $4.12M. Net assets increased during that same time period from $45.34M to $49.47M. (link)

William & Mary has named Larry Pulley, former longtime dean of W&M's Raymond A. Mason School of Business, as Interim GM for the next year. In addition to other duties, Pulley will be tasked with helping develop the position description for the future GM. Tribe AD Brian Mann: "Larry, for years, has been a strong supporter of Tribe Athletics, and his business acumen coupled with his knowledge of business analytics will greatly help us in this new world of college sports. As he starts his GM duties, he will be spending much of his time during the next 3-4 months with our basketball programs to help them build off last year's successful seasons, but each of our teams will have the opportunity to work with Larry and benefit from his great experience and insight.” (link)

Extra Points’ Matt Brown provides contract details for the “Montana State/North Dakota State 2027 Las Vegas game (via ESPN Events),” noting there’s a “healthy participation fee. Also specific dates could change, depending on what the NFL does with Labor Day.” From the contract, EPI will pay each participating school $1.25M within 30 days following the event. Additionally, once local ticket sales reach the $3.3M mark net, EPI and each school will share an equal third of net ticket revenue. If the event is canceled, neither the fee, nor additional revenue, would be due. Also, if the NFL moves its opening week to Labor Day weekend and/or the college football season moves its season start to week zero, the parties “agree to good faith conversations about adjusting the dates as appropriate” with exact time to be determined by EPI and broadcast slated for a nationally distributed ESPN-owned or operated network.
