Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell reportedly remarked during yesterday’s Knight Commission meeting that commissioners had acknowledged to him “privately” that they know a modification of the Sports Broadcasting Act would generate more revenue, “but I don’t want to give up control of my own media-rights negotiation.” According to SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, those discussions have never happened: “I have never stated – publicly or privately – that pooling media rights would increase revenue, nor do I believe that it would. His misrepresentation of my position raises serious concerns about the accuracy of his other claims. ... His comments reflect a fundamental misunderstanding of the realities of college athletics.” Sankey adds: “My responsibility lies with the institutions I serve and the student-athletes on our campuses. Mr. Campbell’s suggestion that commissioners are indifferent to the institutional level is both irresponsible and damaging to his own credibility.” Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark similarly remarked that “Cody is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts. I’ve never said pooling media rights will increase revenue. The only thing I have said is that hope isn’t a strategy. There are unintended consequences to amending the (SBA) that Cody and his team need to better understand. … Our decisions are rooted in collaboration, accountability, and a deep understanding of the institutional impact for student-athletes. The SCORE Act is the first step in solving the issues facing collegiate athletics.” (link)

Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti supports expanding March Madness and explains: “I think part of the motivation for the NCAA is a recognition with these larger conferences, you’re going to force teams to closer to .500 records in their conferences. What access do they have? I think overall, with the system we have now with large conferences, more access is better. … I think we tilt to the side that access is important and I just believe that as many teams competing for as long as possible for the right reward is the best place to be.” As far as how an expanded 72- or 76-team field would be formatted, Petitti says he expects the current system will “probably continue,” but the Big Ten’s preference would be for what Petitti referred to as “straight seeding,” with the early games being the lower-seeded teams. Sports Illustrated’s Kevin Sweeney: “In Petitti’s ‘straight seeding’ approach, the vast majority of one-bid league winners would have to beat one another for a spot in the main 64-team draw. Meanwhile, every Big Ten team selected would’ve passed straight through into the Round of 64.” Petitti: “We’re biased, [but] we think our teams will be seeded higher as the field goes in.” (link)
|
Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti also offers words of praise for Michigan State AD J Batt: “J has done a great job. He’s already contributing a lot. Given so much that’s going on, our athletic directors meet on a weekly basis and J has been participating. Obviously, he’s very experienced coming from (Georgia) Tech, so he’s really well regarded in the room.” Petitti also believes that when it comes to NIL Go: “I think people have to just respect the process. Look, I know there’s been some things that have been reported about the speed of deals and how things get cleared. But part of this is we want these deals to be scrutinized. All of the participants in the system want deals to be fair. So that takes some time, and we’re doing it for the first time. … It’s only gonna improve over time.” (link)

Oklahoma Football’s struggles over the past three years “were a red alert that something had to change both on and off the field,” writes The Athletic’s Chris Vannini, who notes Sooners AD Joe Castiglione and school officials began a program structure overhaul to help HC Brent Venables that included a new offensive coordinator and quarterback duo, a top-rated transfer running back, a new GM, a bulked-up scouting department and a streamlined NIL plan. Vannini continues: “Oklahoma was run like most college football programs, it turned out, but it was time for something different. The common phrase around the sport these days of pursuing an ‘NFL model’ doesn’t mean just paying players. For Oklahoma, the evaluation’s recommendations went deep into specifics: Set more defined duties for staff. Change the tape grading scale for current players and prospects. Let actual scouts handle player identification.” Castiglione: “Just saying it isn’t going to accomplish it. It’s something that has to be done every minute of every day, every week, every month. There is a standard of excellence here we live to. [...] There are moments throughout the journey that test your resolve, test your belief, test your faith. Things happen, some out of our control, some of them we weren’t good enough. We have enough humility to accept it all and realize we had to be better. When you see the progress, you want to double down and work hard to keep this going.” More. (link)

Maryland AD Jim Smith is leaning hard into visibility and community-building to turn SECU Stadium into a true home-field draw, according to The Diamondback’s Michael Howes, who spent some time with Smith before the Terps’ football game against Washington on Saturday. Howes notes the new Terps’ CEO made appearances at tailgates and fan zones and is promoting tailgating, family programming and student-led traditions as pillars of a stickier game-day culture. Smith argues attendance follows belief – if fans think the Terps can win, they’ll keep coming – and is amplifying outreach on social and in the media. Smith also emphasized that lasting traditions at Maryland must come from students rather than administrators, and sees naming the student section as a first step toward building tradition. “A bunch of old guys and old women come up with an idea — it’s not as good as if the students come up with it themselves.” Smith has already won over one powerful supporter in Under Armour Founder Kevin Plank, who says: “He’s exactly what Maryland needed. He’s going to pull this athletic department together.” (link)

Rutgers Men’s Basketball HC Steve Pikiell calls new Scarlet Knights AD Keli Zinn a “breath of fresh air,” adding: “She wakes up in the morning thinking about the issues we have to try to solve. She comes in with a skill set. She’s a relentless worker. She’s in the office all the time. She’s really smart. She’s been very helpful in all areas. She’s aligned with the president, which I think is a first for us in this day and age, too. There’s so much going on in college athletics and so much is business related. She has a business mind and a business background. She’s trying to help solve some of the issues. They don’t solve everything because there’s some teams with unbelievable NIL budgets…[but] she gives us a chance in all those different areas to be good. So, very thankful for her. Her phone is always on, she’ll call me. She’s really been great. She’s hired some really good people, too. That kind of solves some of the things we’ve been lacking.” (link)

No longer able to run afoul of NCAA rules by betting on pro sports, student-athletes and coaches could still run afoul of states’ laws, writes Sportico’s Michael McCann, who notes that sports betting remains illegal in the nation’s two most populous states, California and Texas, and even among the 39 states that have legalized sports betting, many—including Arizona, Louisiana and Massachusetts—require bettors to be 21, which is older than many college students. Per McCann, there’s a logic behind allowing student-athletes the chance to bet on pro sports, if their classmates can do so, as treating them like their peers promotes fairness and equity. Attorney Alan Milstein: “For years, the NCAA has hassled college athletes who enjoyed doing what the rest of the college kids are free to do: have a DraftKings or FanDuel account and bet on professional sports contests that have no connection to the contests the college athletes engage in. Prohibiting college athletes from, say, betting on fantasy pro football would be no different than prohibiting them from playing Texas Holdem online or at a casino. Now they should reverse any sanctions they imposed on these athletes.” More. (link)

Washington football student-athlete Jacob Manu has joined many others in filing a lawsuit challenging the NCAA's eligibility rules. Boise State professor Sam Ehrlich: “He is challenging the Redshirt and Four Seasons Rules, seeking to play a fifth season within his overall Five Year Clock. As with (most of) the others, Manu's challenge is an antitrust claim, arguing in part that the redshirt rule limit of four games (plus playoff games) arbitrarily deprives the best players of their potential highest earning years.” (link)

Oklahoma State President Jim Hess cleared up any questions about OSU AD Chad Weiberg’s future in Stillwater, remarking: “Mr. Weiberg will be our athletic director. I think there's been a lot of questions about that over the summer. Mr. Weiberg will be our athletic director. And I've said it all during the summer that I would deal with it in due time. We had lots of other challenges, as I know and you know. I wanted to address those directly, but Mr. Weiberg will be our athletic director.” Per Tulsa World’s Eric Bailey, the OSU Board of Regents will have an opportunity to take up specifics and approve a new deal for Weiberg, who has been working without a contract since his deal lapsed July 30, when they meet Oct. 24. Hess: “OSU is absolutely committed to athletic success. Many people describe it as the front door to the university. We're absolutely committed to being successful in our conference and nationally.” (link)

More than three months after the SEC signed a “membership” or “participation agreement” meant to coalesce power conference schools in a formal alliance under House settlement terms, no other league has joined them. Per Ross Dellenger for On3, the reason why is complicated as a “new version of the agreement has recently emerged from a Washington D.C.-based law firm, and the document is in the midst of final revisions from power conference executives (the SEC must sign again, as the original has undergone changes and was only contingent on other leagues signing). [...] Big Ten officials are opposed to agreeing to such a legal document if the College Sports Commission has the authority to apply a postseason ban as a penalty.” One Power 4 AD from outside the Big Ten remarked: “Everybody is saying we need to have rules. Unless there are significant consequences, how do we enforce these rules? We are once again in a no-man’s land because of the inaction of one of our conferences. That’s not healthy for the sustainability of college athletics.” Dellenger continues: “The delay in signing the agreement is causing problems, as it also puts new penalties and their enforcement in limbo. [...] It seems likely that either (1) the Big Ten strikes a compromise over the postseason-ban penalty and signs or (2) the new version of the document is not signed by anyone and, likely, lawsuits continue to be filed against any enforcement.” More. Speaking at Big Ten Men’s Basketball Media Day, Commissioner Tony Petitti had this to say on the subject of private capital: “Whether or not we decide to take to a strategic investment (to modernize our conference) is what we're considering, with the goal of continuing to grow opportunities for student-athletes.” NBC’s Nicole Auerbach notes “Petitti says it is one potential avenue for the league to take, and it’ll be a decision made by all 18 conference members.” (link)

At today’s Knight Commission meeting, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA), co-sponsor of the SAFE Act, was asked whether she would be in favor of limitations on coaching salaries and responded: "I’m all for coaching limitations." NCAA SVP of External Affairs Tim Buckley noted the NCAA would be willing to listen to Congress about federal legislation that would cap spending on non-athlete expenses (ie, coaching salaries), according to Tulane Sports Law Director Gabe Feldman. ESPN’s Dan Murphy adds that Cantwell was “not a fan of the Big Ten's proposed private equity play” and suggested “it could threaten the tax-exempt status of those schools.” Cantwell: "You’re going to let someone take and monetize what is really a public resource? … That's a real problem." More coming from the meeting. (link, link)

ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips and Louisville AD Josh Heird both believe federal regulation is needed in college sports. Per the Courier Journal’s Payton Titus, Phillips prefers the SCORE Act with his league having recently submitted a letter to Congress supporting the bill. Phillips: “If it's not the SCORE Act or something similar, then we have real issues. Because we are still unsettled in this area, and we need stabilization, and we also need to continue to modernize and have something that's sustainable.” Heird has spent a lot of time trying to explain the “need” for federal intervention to Washington D.C.’s Kentucky delegation, remarking: “Why is Congress getting involved in college athletics? There's all these things going on in the world, (and) Congress is going to spend their time on this? And I would answer that with, Congress doesn't get involved in anything, for the most part, until they feel like they need to. And I do believe that we're at that point. We literally just turned that (traditional) model on its head with NIL ... And that's where universities and athletic departments are saying, quite honestly, ‘What's the new model now?’” More. (link)

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports “West Virginia is going to add 140 new athletic scholarships starting in the 2026-27 season, including 16 new football scholarships and 124 in Olympic sports. WVU's Board of Governors voted in September to be among the top funded schools in the Big 12. This move is a by-product of that Board of Governors plan. The total scholarship number at WVU will rise to 400 from 260 over its 18 sports.” (link)

Western Michigan’s first Men’s Ice Hockey national championship this past April was born out of AD Dan Bartholomae’s original message about the Broncos’ athletics department needing to think big writes ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, who notes WMU is the overwhelming No. 1 team in the country entering this season, as they try to become the first team to capture consecutive national titles since Minnesota-Duluth in 2019. WMU President Russ Kalvahuna: “There's nothing more exciting than a national championship for a regional university like us. The story of a regional university is always thinking you might have a chance, but learning you don't. And that's what this team completely demolished for all of us.” Rittenberg continues: “The Broncos were honored on the field at Comerica Park and Ford Field in Detroit, and at Wrigley Field in Chicago. They got the key to the city in Kalamazoo, and receive congratulations whenever they go around town in their WMU gear.” As a result of the title, “the Broncos are accessing higher-level recruits, but since the hockey prospect cycle goes several years out, the benefit of the championship -- and the new [Kalamazoo Event Center] arena -- might not fully be felt for another year or two.’ For his part, Bartholomae expects WMU to be “a mainstay in the Frozen Four.” More. LSU has already inked a multimillion-dollar jersey patch sponsor deal, even prior to the NCAA’s final approval of a new proposal permitting commercial logos on uniforms, reports Front Office Sports’ David Rumsey, with LSU Deputy AD/CRO Clay Harris adding: “We’ve mapped it out—it’ll be on all of our uniforms, every sport.” Harris is “very confident” the measure will be approved, which is why he says his team has been working on the implementation of jersey patch sponsors for the past 12 months. If the deal comes to fruition, the Tigers would be the first known program to have an agreement in place. Per Rumsey, Harris wouldn’t cite the company or how much they’ve agreed to pay, but speculated "the Tigers can “rival some of the top pro sports teams” in jersey patch dollars. Harris: “The value of an LSU or another big brand in college sports, across all sports, could come close to what a pro sports team is getting. We went through a very extensive process on the valuation piece, because we wanted to make sure we got that right. We did some internal studies—we started with pro sports and had a pretty good idea of what pro sports patches were going for. And so we based it off of that.” (link)

Arkansas Men’s Basketball is the latest to invest in a version of student-athlete health insurance, dubbed “booster insurance” in Fayetteville, per ESPN’s Dan Wetzel. Insert 32 Group, a firm co-founded by Travis Long, who previously played for Hogs HC John Calipari at Memphis & is offering insurance on the health of Arkansas’ players for what’s effectively just 3% of an NIL/revenue share deal. Wetzel: “For example, if a player is being paid $1M, ‘Arkansas’ will pay $30K for the insurance. If that player is lost to season-ending injury before Jan. 15, whatever entity is giving the $1M (school, collective or business) will be paid back in full (the athlete will have already collected or will continue to get their money as spelled out in the contract). If the player goes down from Jan. 15 to Feb. 15, the policy will return 50%. That way, should a player be lost, the school, booster or business won't feel as if their money were just torched.” More.
