ESPN’s Dan Wetzel shares more from a call between Michigan and USC trustees who continue to discuss a potential Big Ten private equity deal: “The two schools discussed their shared skepticism during the call. One sticking point: The deal doesn't address the root issue – soaring costs – that has made the need for cash so imperative for athletic departments. Just providing short-term money, sources said, does not solve that issue. … Both Michigan and USC believe there are funding options that can provide superior terms and would like to slow the process and explore them, sources said. The goal, the meeting agreed, should be to help the Big Ten schools that need money but at the most favorable terms imaginable without giving up equity.” Wetzel also notes a conference-wide call with league presidents and ADs was “tentatively planned for Thursday, but there might be more work to be done before then if winning Michigan and USC over is possible. No official vote has been scheduled.” (link)

The Charlotte Business Journal’s Erik Spanberg examines how the ACC’s recent additions of CRO Anthony Macri, Chief Marketing and Brand Officer Marques Zak and VP of Sport Technology and Innovation Jay Sartori are helping the league boost more revenue and adapt to the changing environment. ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips says the “three positions were created to enhance the ongoing strategic priorities of our office, and each will bring exceptional experience to the ACC. … We have been in a little bit of a holding pattern (as it relates to the new hires and revenue strategy). I’ll just be very direct: With some of the lawsuits and legal issues that we’ve had, we have not been able to move forward in some areas that we needed to.” Since those suits have been settled, Phillips explains: “We’ve been freed up to have this massive reorganization that we went with in the spring time, but to add three additive positions, to have somebody every day looking at revenue, every day looking at branding and marketing, and every day from a sports tech, data, analytics perspective – to me, is game-changing for us.” (link)

Tennessee AD Danny White weighs in on how the Vols will approach potential jersey patch partnerships: "I think it just depends on the resource opportunity. It depends on the brand. Something that visible associated with something that's sacred to us, our uniform… it's a lot more delicate, kind of like Neyland Stadium. We didn't rename Neyland Stadium. We preserved it with the Pilot partnership. And I think that was a really good balance of honoring our tradition while also understanding the resources we need to be as competitive as we want to be." White also notes that "there’s never been this close of a relationship between winning and resources as there is right now in college sports. I think that the highest-resourced athletic departments are going to be the best. And we've been saying since day one, we want to be the best athletic department college sports has ever seen." As UT continues to look for new revenue streams, White says he wants to be conscious of the fans. "I don't want to gouge our fans. We pay a lot of attention to price points and making sure that we're not being unreasonable compared to what our peers are charging." (link)

More from Rutgers AD Keli Zinn on the newly unveiled R NIL initiative: “What has happened here historically is there has been an incredible amount of pressure on our coaches to support NIL efforts specifically to their sports. They’ve done as good of a job as they can navigating that space. But we have now alleviated that pressure and they will have a team surrounding them that are experts in this area and are expected to get those opportunities for their athletes. … NIL doesn’t equate exactly to winning. But what it does do is it certainly positions you for a greater likelihood of success. I do believe some of the deficiency we’ve had in that area over the years has likely caught up to us.” In reference to the football roster, Zinn explains: “One of the first items of business is to make sure none of those guys leave. And that they recognize the potential here and what our future is going to look like and then we package around them some really good talent around them coming from other areas in order to put together a product on the field for next season that’s really impressive.” (link)

UAB AD Mark Ingram this week was asked whether he takes responsibility for the disappointing trajectory of the football program after hiring former HC Trent Dilfer and responded: “Absolutely. We’ve hired, I don’t know the number, I think in my time here, we’ve hired maybe 25 head coaches, something like that. And have had great success. We didn’t have the success that we wanted to have with him. We knew that any hire has some amount of risk because these jobs are hard. These jobs are really hard. It’s not as simple as just X and O’s in football anymore. The totality of their job is enormous.” In response to a question about people calling for his job, Ingram remarked: “I’m in my 11th year here. With the support of our board and our president and our community, we’ve done some pretty incredible things. [...] What we’ve been able to do with our facilities and so forth to put us in a position to even get an invitation to the American was no small task. We’ll continue to do that. Our success is something we’re very proud of as a department. We’ve improved in a lot of areas – academically, we serve our community very well and we have won championships in more than one sport and have moved programs that used to be bottom feeders into the top 25. It’s like turning a battleship. It’s not something overnight that you just snap your finger and all the sudden you’re great. We are a lot better than what we used to be and we’re proud of that.” (link)

Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger reports “the National Urban League and the National Basketball Retired Players Association sent a letter to the House and Senate Democratic Caucus yesterday against the SCORE Act, calling it ‘not a bill for fairness - it is a bill for the NCAA.’” Dellenger adds: “Lawmakers and their staffs continue to work on amendments to the SCORE Act for a potential re-introduction of the legislation later this fall - presumably after the government reopens. Amendments will reflect compromises made with the Black Caucus and 10 non-FCS conferences.” The full letter. (link)

AD for Academic Services Bobby Fieman joins College.town's Kristen Eargle to highlight the department’s Director of Football Academics opening and explains the ideal candidate will be a self-starter who comes in with energy on Day 1. Fieman notes that while it doesn’t make headlines, the challenges in college sports do impact what happens on the academics side. “So, how do we get creative and innovative in what we do and how we structure – whether that’s study hall, that’s travel study hall, that’s our structure of in-person vs. online class. It’s how do we get unique with our support? … We lead our conference by almost 20 points in APR in the football space. How do we keep that going? Outside of that, I’d love someone who already has some football experience but someone that’s open to learning and bringing their ideas.” Find out more on Collegiate Sports Connect. (link)

Learfield President of Brand Management and Marketing Cory Moss talks with SBJ’s Ben Portnoy about the company’s role in today’s ecosystem and explains: “Well, first [schools are] asking us to make more and more money. Obviously, that’s a key driver because there’s so much pressure on revenue right now. Budgets are expanding -- coaches, facilities, all the things are just more and more expensive. The budgets are ballooning, and so they have to uncover new revenue opportunities. We have to help them uncover new NIL opportunities for their student athletes, because that helps them retain and attract student athletes. ... When I talk about technology or the ground game – putting content people on campus to help produce some of these things – that’s really important. That pressure is even more, but it’s really around revenue and making it easier as possible and new opportunities open up every time we turn around.” (link)

Puck’s John Ourand points out that the “biggest sports rights deal outside of the U.S. officially commenced this afternoon. UC3—the joint venture between UEFA and the European Football Clubs—and Relevent Football Partners, their commercial partner, launched a tender process that should lead to a deal for Champions League rights by the end of next month.” Ourand believes the bidding process will function as an inflection point “for this moment in both the sports rights marketplace and the final stages of the streaming wars. For starters, the Champions League features clubs from France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the U.K. Second, past auctions have resulted in five separate deals for each territory. Now, UC3 and Relevent have an opportunity to sell universal deals to a global streamer like Netflix, Amazon, or YouTube. Relevent and UC3 also seem to comprehend their hand at the table. Whereas past deals had a three-year term, they are now accepting bids for four-year lockups. This process could also presage the future of NFL, college football, and NBA auctions—the next wave of negotiations that will cleave the haves of the business from the have-nots. The groups have another inducement for these hyper-streamers, too: The Champions League plans to hold the first match of the 2027 season, featuring the 2026 champion, as a stand-alone eventized game.” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports that “at fancy parties in the hills of California and within luxury suites high above the [LA Coliseum], influential donors and university board members” of Michigan and USC “met, mingled and dished on the latest big story from their conference: Is the Big Ten really about to enter into a $2.4B capital deal with a California pension fund?” One board member tells Dellenger: “We don’t have any reason why we need to do this particular deal,” and another notes: “The more people understand this, the more people have questions.” A person with knowledge of the USC Board of Trustees’ position also remarks that “they aren’t on board.” Dellenger goes on to explain that “it is more clear than ever that a decision is upon the conference one way or another. In fact, the schools received 200-plus pages of governance documents over the weekend detailing specifics of the agreement with UC Investments. The conference office has also scheduled a meeting for late this week with its presidents.” Another twist is both Michigan & USC have interim Presidents at the moment. An unnamed university board member sums it up like this: “[Big Ten Commissioner] Tony [Pettiti] is trying to be the best steward of the Big Ten. But why lock yourself into a 20-year grant of rights? The world is changing every three minutes.” (link)

Maryland AD Jim Smith is in the headlines again as he visits with Playfly Sports Chairman Michael Schreiber and JohnWallStreet Founder Corey Leff on the latest episode of JohnWallStreet Presents: Big Business on Campus. Smith on industries he sees as untapped for sponsorship and ripe for activation: “I think the medical side of the business right now, that still continues to be a huge growth category. Both from a wearable standpoint, but also from the traditional hospital healthcare category. … We have a great partner in the system, but that’s always going to be able to grow. It’s going to be an expanding category for a long period of time. … Everybody knows auto and beer and all those things are already done. What’s the next areas or technologies? I talked about wearables, but just technology in general. It’s an enormous opportunity. We’re sitting with a technology area just on the other side of campus that’s got a whole bunch of start-ups that we all hope will become our next big partner.” More from Smith. (link)

Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart was asked about the state of the football program on Tuesday and responded: “Make no mistake about it, we want success. We want to work through it. We’ve worked through these things before. I think if people look at the history, what we’ve done in Kentucky, we’ve always found our way through. We’ve worked through difficult moments. If everyone will reflect on the program that [HC Mark Stoops] inherited and where he took us for eight straight years. Then the changes in the world of college athletics occurred, and it was a struggle for us for a couple of years just to try and find our way. And so that middle part, everyone was pretty much on board, and everyone was fine, and now we’re having to adjust to some changes in college athletics and work our way through it.” (link)

Indiana Football’s run to No. 3 in the current AP poll has created a 50% surge in gameday traffic on IU’s athletics website, IUHoosiers.com, writes SBJ’s Austin Karp, who observes much of the growth is likely due to fan base expansion over the past two seasons, which included last year’s unexpected IU run to the College Football Playoff. Per Fanbase, “there were just over 674K fans accounted for this time in 2023. Last year, that jumped to 1.13M by mid-October, and it’s now up to 1.6M. Year-over-year, traffic to the IU athletics site is up 21% among users and up 27% for sessions.” Growth is similar on IU Athletics’ mobile app with total users up 16%, video views up 25% and session duration up 24%. U.S. Magistrate Judge Herman H. Johnson Jr. has denied Alabama’s motion to quash a subpoena for Crimson Tide Executive Deputy AD/COO Shane Lyons to testify in former men’s basketball student-athlete Kai Spears’ defamation lawsuit against The New York Times, reasoning Lyons “could provide information relevant to Spears’ claim that the Times defamed him by incorrectly reporting he was present at a Tuscaloosa, Ala., shooting that took place in January 2023.” Per Sportico’s Michael McCann, the Times wants to depose Lyons and ask for his testimony concerning his conversations with Kai Spears’ father, (former Marshall AD) Christian Spears, and meetings between athletics department staff and players, pointing out that one of Spears’ legal arguments is that the Times should have engaged more diligently with Alabama to ascertain facts. Per the judge, deposing Lyons “might reveal whether the Times had the capacity to engineer ‘a reasonably thorough investigation, including verifying information accuracy,’ and in what ways Alabama’s response impacted the Times’ reporting.” More. Gonzaga Men’s Basketball HC Mark Few joins Jon Rothstein on the Inside College Basketball Now podcast and weighs in on potential NCAA Tournament expansion, remarking: “These are complicated issues and not ones to just throw out opinions without [being] based on any kind of facts and data. I do think the best argument for keeping it the same is that you really, really lessen the importance of a regular season if you’re just gonna keep expanding. As much as you fight and scratch and claw, and you know those teams that are on the bubble at the end of the year, at some point they probably aren’t worthy of making the tournament, if based on a losing record in league, no matter how hard your league is. At the same time, when you’re at one of those places, you can make a compelling argument because you’re comparing it to another team that got in that may or may not have been worthy. I stand by this, and all the World Cup people can fight me on it, but I think [the NCAA Tournament] is the greatest sporting event in the world. It just captures attention. … Year-in and year-out it delivers. … It’s just amazing, especially when you’re sitting at a Final Four at the end of it or just watching the drama the first weekend. I’m very, very concerned about kind of messing with that.” More. (link)

How will Duke’s Kara Lawson balance her dual role as both the Blue Devils’ Women’s Basketball HC and HC of the USA Basketball Women’s National Team? That’s the question posed by SB Nation’s Mitchell Northam, who notes one of Lawson’s biggest hurdles is a FIBA Women’s World Cup qualifying tournament that falls right between the end of the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament, which wraps on March 8, and the start of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament that begins in earnest on March 20. Lawson: “It takes two great staffs. My staff at Duke has a high level of experience — so I lean on them a lot to be able to run our program and to teach. So, leaning on them at times when the USA commitment pulls me a little bit, and vice versa.” Lawson isn’t the first college coach to deal with this conflict as [South Carolina Women’s HC] Dawn Staley and [UConn Women’s HC] Geno Auriemma were able to coach Team USA to Olympic gold medals while actively coaching in college, while on the men’s side former Duke Men’s HC Mike Krzyzewski coached the Blue Devils while guiding the Americans to three gold medals.
