American Commissioner Tim Pernetti tells The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman and Rob Dauster that his league is the “most raided conference in the transfer portal on an annual basis, and it’s not a badge of honor. I look at it two ways, which is how do we solve for this? And the other side of it is we’re recruiting the right kind of talent into this league.” Schools, Pernetti adds, need to find a way to create insurance on these investments. “And, by the way, I’ve met with outside insurance firms that are willing to come in and underwrite this risk because they see it as there’s so much transaction in the space there’s money to be made on it. But until a school has more protection on their investment, here’s what happens. You’re an athletic director, you raise the money, you pay Jeff $500K to come and play and nine months later he leaves for $1M at another school. You have to go re-raise that $500K so you have enough to give it to other players. There needs to be, whether it’s a buyout or whether it’s a penalty that gets passed forward to the school that’s acquiring that student-athlete – I don’t think you’re going to be able to sell that one – but getting into contractual agreements at the high level is where we have to go. And some schools are already doing it.” (link)

Pernetti also discusses the American’s new 10-team conference hoops tournament format and says about leaving out the bottom teams: “The conversation becomes, ‘Hey, Tim, this is the only opportunity that some of these kids will have to play in the postseason.’ And that breaks my heart because I understand it, but the reality too is you’ve got to earn it. You want to be one of the 10? Be one of the 10. And as a former media guy, our inventory in February is going to be really valuable. It’s going to have a lot of exposure.” When it comes to scheduling, Pernetti explains that Power 4 teams have shied away from playing some American teams “because they’re concerned about losing the game. And what I’d say to those conferences is what happened to the romance of this business where you line up and you play and you see who wins. So, what we’ve told our schools is, while it's not ideal, get bought and go on the road in one of those games. Get bought, go play Quad 2. Don’t stack a Quad 4 at home.” Further on the scheduling front, the league is also looking into “manufacturing some inventory” by creating more MTEs. (link)

Puck’s John Ourand examines Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell’s claim that pooling media rights could generate upwards of $7B and explains: “Last year, ESPN bought a package of rights to 40 NCAA championships, including women’s basketball, baseball, softball, lacrosse, etcetera, for $920M over eight years. Some of the more popular sports in this package, like women’s basketball, could probably command a higher rights fee on their own. But that would devalue the rest of the package and orphan some of the smaller sports, like swimming and diving or track and field. Campbell insists that he’s in this for the long haul. But media executives and college administrators see his ideas as nonstarters. I was reminded of this current dialectic while listening to my partner Matt Belloni interview TKO top executives Ari Emanuel and Mark Shapiro on his podcast, The Town. A mere two months ago, Shapiro doubled the UFC’s rights fees via a seven-year, $7.7B deal with Paramount. You might think he’d be optimistic, especially when the NBA is about a week away from starting its $76B deals with ESPN, NBC, and Amazon, and the NFL is about to open up its deals early—a move that will take even more money out of the market. Instead, he was cautious and sober. ‘It’s the middle that’s going to get cut out,’ Shapiro told Matt, though he might have offered the same advice to Campbell.” (link)

An example of things to come for college athletics? High-profile English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur has received a nearly $134M capital infusion from its majority owner, ENIC Sports & Development, to give the club financial funding to invest in players, facilities and more. Front Office Sports’ Ben Horney notes the infusion comes as the team has batted back three takeover attempts since the start of September. The offers came from PCP International Finance, Firehawk Holdings, and a group led by Brooklyn Earick, a U.S. entrepreneur who runs a Singapore-based venture capital firm. According to its most recent financial results, Spurs’ revenue for last year was $703.9M, down from $732.4M in 2023. The club largely attributes the decrease to it’s participation in Champions League in 2023 (the club did not qualify for the UCL in 2024). Despite the dip in revenue, the team’s 2024 net loss was $34.8M, down from $115.4M in 2023. (link)

Oregon State AD Scott Barnes Q&As with The Oregonian’s Ryan Clarke, who asks Barnes about the Blueprint Sports deal and the perception by some that OSU is giving up too much and not getting enough back: “Let’s put it in perspective first. So, I’ve got four third-party rights agreements I’m in the beginning, middle or end of, including multimedia rights, media rights, and apparel. On the scale, Blueprint just — I mean, it’s important — but it’s a pretty small piece of everything we’re doing. And there’s upside. And if the upside doesn’t work, we’ll move on. So, I know that there was misinformation out there as it relates to percentages, and [Exec. Deputy AD/COO] Brent (Blaylock) tried to clean all that up the best he could. We can continue to communicate, but the reality of this is that we have an outside entity that’s taking control of the Dam Nation collective that would have been left for dead. And we’re going to try to make something of it. There is only upside on this. So, a bit confused by all the banter when, in fact, we have a chance to grow our NIL program, and the nitty gritty of the percentages were off. Brent cleared that up. I’m not going to get into those numbers. Conceptually, we have some upside here. We’re going to execute on that. We’ve got boots on the ground. We have a chance to create some more opportunities for our student-athletes. And of all the things we’re working on, it’s important, but it’s not a huge deal. It’s an opportunity to get better. And if we don’t, if we don’t execute, then we’ll move on. It’s not a loss. It’s only a gain.” (link)

Auburn AD John Cohen on Monday told AL.com’s Peter Rauterkus that changing football coaches is “not my expectation at this point,” adding of his thought process: “I don’t know if I’m going to walk outside and my car is going to start or not, I think it is. I have an expectation it will. But if my car doesn’t start enough, then I will evaluate that and make decisions about my car. But that’s not my expectation at this point about our football program.” When asked what would go into potentially making a change, Cohen explained he considers several factors. “Is the locker room still buying in? Are we still bringing in the right types of student-athletes, both out of the portal and from the high school and junior college ranks? And are our kids getting better? And are they giving a great effort? That’s the template for me. Those are the questions I have to answer for myself in any program that we have.” (link)

The women’s basketball matchup between Connecticut and Louisville scheduled for November 4 at Ramstein Air Base in Germany is in jeopardy due to the ongoing government shutdown. Cardinals HC Jeff Walz during the Tipoff Luncheon remarked: "Our first game, as you know, is hopefully going to be on the Air Force base — if we open back up. We're closed right now, our country." WDRB’s Eric Crawford notes one option on the table is to move the game to Louisville on the same date. (link)

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had spent $6.5M on ads running during college football games as of last week, according to Puck’s John Ourand, who adds: “I’m told that a 30-second ad during the big primetime college football games generally goes for around $300K. Because these are one-off ad buys and obviously not part of a general election, networks are charging top dollar for these spots, sources told me. (By law, networks have to give candidates for public office the lowest rate that was sold in a particular game—a rule that doesn’t apply here.) Once sold, network ad sales execs send the commercials to their legal departments to make sure they pass all the standards-and-practices checks they have in place. I guess these did.” (link)

CollegeAD shares the details of Tennessee Tech AD Casey Fox’s contract. Officially, Fox’s term began on June 30, 2025, and will run through July 1, 2030. He will earn an annual base salary of $250K and will receive a $25K signing bonus, a one-time relocation bonus of $20K, and an annual $5K retention bonus for each year he remains employed as AD in Cookeville. Fox can also earn a slew of performance bonuses ranging from $5K for winning the conference regular-season title in football, men’s basketball, or women’s basketball up to $25K for any varsity national championship, and $25K if student-athlete academics qualify the University for the full NCAA Academic Unit Revenue Distribution (or its successor). Further, if all contract terms are met, he can also earn $10K when private gifts exceed $2M, $20K when corporate sponsorships exceed $1M, and $20K when ticket sales exceed $1.5M. Tennessee Tech may terminate without cause. If that happens, the school would owe Fox a severance equal to 75% of Fox’s then-salary for three years if termination is in Year 1, two years if in Year 2, and one year if in Year 3 or later. If Fox terminates, he owes the university $200K in Year 1, $125K in Year 2, and $75K in Year 3. (link)

As prediction markets that feel super similar to sports gambling platforms, yet are unregulated (notably: Kalshi & Polymarket), continue to rise in popularity, Straight to the Point publisher Steve Ruddock breaks down some of the risks associated. Insider trading is the “elephant in the room,” according to Ruddock, who explains concerns came to a head amid suspicious activity on Polymarket surrounding the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize announcement. “Bets surged on the eventual winner just hours before the reveal, prompting the Norwegian Nobel Committee to launch a probe into potential leaks — there’s some online speculation as to what happened.” Namely, a Polymarket user figured out who won the prize 11 hours before it was announced, prompting one observer to note the “Nobel Committee just got front-run by the internet.” Ruddock offers further context: “What’s interesting is the number of people defending insider trading as part of the prediction market process, claiming ‘insider trading’ enhances market accuracy by incorporating privileged info faster, turning it into a feature rather than a bug.” Others have a different perspective, arguing that insider trading punishes market makers and recreational participants. Ruddock: “For now, it’s a reminder that these markets come with ethical and legal asterisks.” (link)

Following just its second losing season in 25 years, Oklahoma decided to start running its Football program like an NFL franchise, reports The Wall Street Journal’s Rachel Bachman who notes among the first steps in the process were the hiring of former AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson in a role “closer to that of an NFL team owner” and former Philadelphia Eagles VP of Football Administration Jake Rosenberg as “de facto general manager.” Stephenson: “We need to make sure that we keep football viable, healthy and competitive at the very highest levels. And to do that, we needed to really rethink how we operated and organized our football operation.” Rosenberg: “In the NFL we very clearly realized that there’s a benefit to specialization. And when you talk about coaches who want to do everything or have control of everything, that has proven to not be a model that is successful.” Lots more. (link)

KBTX Sports’ Travis L Brown reports Texas A&M Men’s Basketball student-athlete Rashaun Agee has been granted a temporary restraining order in his court hearing for eligibility relief against the NCAA, with Judge George Jerrell Wise remarking: “This might be a different result later, but today I’m approving” the TRO. Brown adds: “Will still go to trial at a later date if the NCAA doesn’t change [its] mind on waiver. Here is the reality of the situation, from my perspective: There is little chance they would be able to get a trial date set before the end of the [Men’s Basketball] season. Barring something crazy coming out of left field, Agee will be able to play for Texas A&M this season.” Boise State legal professor Sam Ehrlich adds: “I fully agree with Travis that they will not be able to get a trial before the end of the MBB season.” Of particular note in the hearing is Agee is set to receive $1.2M from the Aggies this season as part of his revenue sharing deal. There continues to be smoke around the potential continuation of the Notre Dame-USC Football rivalry past this Saturday’s match-up, as The Los Angeles Times’ Ryan Kartje reports Netflix is still engaged with the Trojans on airing a one-off neutral-site of the rivalry in 2026 as part of its push to “eventize” live sports. Here’s the latest from Kartje: “The Big Ten had already been informed that USC was exploring non-traditional options for continuing the series. USC, according to the source, brought the idea about broadcasting the game on Netflix to the Big Ten while those conversations were happening. It wasn’t trying to nefariously ‘circumvent’ the conference’s media rights agreement. Ultimately, the Big Ten sided with its network partners on their interpretation of the media rights deal. Conversations with Netflix and USC over future scheduling rights are actually still ongoing, in spite of all this.” The San Jose Mercury News' Jon Wilner offers up this observation: “There is no chance USC would still be talking to Netflix without a wink/nod from the Big Ten. None.” More. (link, link)

The Big Ten has fined USC $5K for playing running back Bryan Jackson during its Week 7 victory over Michigan despite listing him as "out" on the team's final pregame availability report after two Trojan ballcarriers left the game due to injury. From a Big Ten statement: “Although these circumstances were unfortunate, it is critical for availability reports to be accurate. Consequently, the conference is imposing a $5K fine and admonishes all institutions to use the 'out' designation only if there are no circumstances under which a student-athlete could participate in a game. The conference considers the matter closed and will have no further comment.” USC HC Lincoln Riley insisted on contacting the Big Ten to explain the extenuating circumstances, but still faces a fine for Jackson’s participation. Riley: “Unique situation. It was a wellness issue obviously in the game. He has been practicing in a very limited capacity in the build up the last several weeks. He had a turf toe. There was the expectation coming into this game that outside of the near catastrophe that we weren't going to play him. The game plays out, we have a couple of injuries that you obviously never expect to happen. We were able to get into communication with the league office and explain the situation. Our doctors medically cleared him. Again, it just became a wellness issue for us. We made sure to clear it.” (link)

Rutgers Football HC Greg Schiano comments on the Scarlet Knights’ NIL efforts to date and moving forward: “We have not tried it. … All due respect to everybody who put forth their effort, but we have not tried it. Not at a Division I level. Forget the Big Ten level. Let’s be clear on that. The only people who’ve done it is the guy you’re standing here looking at, and you can’t do it that way at this level. Now, we have a plan. … There have been no efforts of the level that it takes to play in the Big Ten. … What it takes to win in the Big Ten, you can’t even say it’s minisculey close and that’s it. That’s the end of the conversation. … Will that determine the future? Yes. Will it determine Saturday? No. … We need to keep moving forward. We can not get caught up into that vicious game that everybody wants to talk about. What you have and what you don’t have.” (link)
