Austin Peay President Mike Licari joins CSA Search and Consulting President Drew Turner to discuss the Govs’ open AD position and outlines four near-term priorities: keep enrollment growing, boost student success, enhance campus vitality, and launch the next comprehensive fundraising campaign with athletics as a pillar. In the university’s strategic plan, athletics supports the student experience, the employee experience, and the community experience. As far as experience goes, Licari explains: “I don’t know necessarily that it’s a requirement to be a sitting AD. One of the models we’ve used here for hiring at Austin Peay that’s been very successful is to hire up-and-comers that are at the top of their game, that other people will sometimes overlook because they haven’t done it. Our culture here is very forward thinking, very aggressive, very energetic, and fast-paced, and oftentimes I’m going to tilt towards somebody on the younger side who’s moving up the ladder quickly in their career because I want that energy here.” Find out more on Collegiate Sports Connect. More from Big South Commissioner Sherika Montgomery with The Field of 68’s Rob Dauster and Jeff Goodman. On concerns over potential NCAA Tournament expansion: “I think like with anything, you have to go broad and think about basketball as a product for the NCAA, for the enterprise. We all know what those three to five weeks are during March. When they’re over, we all want more, so what would more look like? When it comes to discussion of expansion, I have always been on the side of if and when done right. Not rolling it out in a fashion where teams could be harmed. I think the financial impact of the tournament itself can be harmed. In having an opportunity to engage with [Senior VP for Basketball] Dan Gavitt and the leadership at the NCAA, I am optimistic about the process that has been laid out. Having an opportunity to work with our television partners … to really assess what is going to be the holistic financial impact without diminishing, we all know what units mean. … So, we want to make sure we’re balancing all of those things, and in doing that, I am supportive of an expansion. … I’m optimistic and I look forward to it.” (link)

Maryland AD Jim Smith provides a framework for considering ROI on capital projects: “When you're building practice facilities, performance centers, I don’t know that there’s a specific ROI I can put on [it] like ‘hey, we’re going to convert these seats into club seats and it’s going to have a three-year payback,’ right? It’s less tangible of an ROI, but knowing you’re creating a differentiator in the recruiting process, it actually matters. I know that even with NIL and rev share payments, you still have to have quality facilities in order to practice in. These are student-athletes who are coming here with the belief that they may have the chance to play at the next level, so you want to have a next level opportunity for them to train in. … When you’re in that recruiting business, you’ve got to have something that can be the differentiator when the revenue side is close. I think we’ve definitely done that. If everybody were to continue to practice in the Xfinity Center, we wouldn’t have the opportunity to be able to use the facility for other revenue opportunities. I don’t know if that was in the model that they ran when they built the basketball performance center, but we’re definitely going to get an ROI specifically from that now that we can use our main arena for other events.” (link)

NC State AD Boo Corrigan weighs in on the number of football coaches being let go midseason: “Honestly, I think there’s been a little bit of a loss of dignity in what we do and firing of coaches mid-season and some of those things. You’ve got people that truly dedicate their life to something, and if it doesn’t work out, is there a need to fire them immediately? Can you look at it and say, ‘Alright. What do we owe back? Are the young people buying into the coach? Are they playing hard? Do they still care about each other? Do those things matter or is it just wins and losses?’ I always believe that the culture of the team and looking at how hard are we playing? Are they buying in? Are they locked in? You can see those things. When the players come off the field are they here? Or are they here? Where are they in what’s going on?” Corrigan also says that “I think, societally, we’ve changed as well with immediate gratification of everything that’s going on. If you get someone from the portal, they’ve got to make an immediate impact on what’s going on. The coach has more and more pressure on them, the assistants have more pressure on them, the trainers have more pressure on them. It’s just expanded out, in a way.” (link)

Duke Football HC Manny Diaz to On3’s Brett McMurphy on the sequence of events at Penn State: “It does say a lot about where we are in college football right now. And this is going to happen more. I don’t know that we’re fully aware of how our sport is changing rapidly. It’s changing, and you can’t build these massive conferences (through realignment)...(without) losing more games. That’s just what’s going to happen. We’re talking about in (the ACC) about having a schedule, it was sort of tiered towards who finished at the top. It’s common sense. The more you put people at the top and they’re going to play each other, someone’s going to lose the games. It’s just going to happen.” Referencing the Detroit-Kansas City NFL game on Sunday night, Diaz adds: “The Chiefs won to go to 3-3, right? And no one thinks that Andy Reid’s not a good coach and no one thinks Dan Campbell is not a good coach. They’ve only won four out of their first six and they’re in second place. It’s just that’s where they (the NFL) have a big thing at the end of year called ‘the playoff,’ which is what we’re getting to, right? I think we’re in a strange place in this sport because if you could have a bad three weeks, then it can go like that quickly.” (link)

New video released by Texas Tech shows a Kansas football player pick up an object from a spot on the Jones AT&T Stadium sideline last Saturday night after a Jayhawks staff member had possibly just dropped an object at the same spot. According to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams, the object “is a closed pocketknife; there's no disagreement on that. … Tech athletics officials who reviewed the video circled the unidentified Kansas staff member in coaching attire and illustrated with two arrows that his right hand moved away from his pants pocket and he purportedly dropped something as he proceeded up the sideline. His actions are shown in ground-level and high-angle video. Moments later in the high-angle video, a Kansas player coming from the other direction reached down to the same spot…casually reached down, picked up the object and handed it to another staff member. The player walked on without pause to a Jayhawks' sideline huddle. The object was then given to Kansas football coach Lance Leipold, who angrily asserted after the game that one of his staff members had been hit by the pocketknife.” (link)

An additional nugget from Learfield President of Brand Management and Marketing Cory Moss’ talk with SBJ’s Ben Portnoy as Moss provided perspective on EA Sports College Football: “To get back in front of those gamers now to showcase traditions and all that college football is about, that’s where a lot of people learned what college football really was. The success of that has been tremendous. More recently, we haven’t gotten the full reports, but the sophomore year of it seems to be doing really, really well, much better than maybe we had anticipated. ... I go back to [our] Compass platform. One of the reasons we built that Compass platform is to make it easy for student-athletes to individually [sign up], because there isn’t collective bargaining. There is no group you go to for the college football game. You’ve got to go to 14,000 individual student-athletes and say, ‘Here’s an opportunity, are you interested? Give us your headshot, give us your attributes and we’ll make sure you’re in the game.’ And if you say no, EA has the ability to put a generic avatar in your place. But to be able to have a piece of technology like that to make that easier was tremendous. I don’t think it happens without it, because just imagine going to a bunch of different places to try and aggregate 14,000 individual teenagers.” (link)

NCAA SVP of External Affairs Tim Buckley participated in a discussion about federal legislation and college sports as part of the Knight Commission meeting last week. Key takeaways…
➤ Buckley reiterated the NCAA’s position that “student-athlete leaders at every level of the NCAA are opposed to becoming employees. They cite not wanting their coach to become a boss. They cite the tax implications that come with being an employee. Our schools at every single level, every single subdivision of Division I and across the association, are opposed to their student-athletes becoming employees. They cite the ruinous cost implications of such a change. … I don’t think there’s a school out there in the United States of America today that could afford to turn all of their student-athletes to employees, increase their FTE headcount by 10, 15, 20% overnight. There would be cuts.”
➤ For comparison, Buckley noted the House settlement is optional; therefore, “schools don’t have to participate in the House settlement. And even if they opt in, they can participate at any financial level they want. There’s no minimum. There is just the cap. Employment would not be optional.”
➤ Buckley also extolled the SCORE Act as the “first bipartisan bill that enshrines into federal law NIL rights for every student-athlete, health and mental health, and academic benefits.” He contrasts that with the SAFE Act, which he argues “appears to undo a lot of that authority that your smaller schools – and especially your Division II and Division III – now have in the process, and it would replace it with a government-appointed board that has tremendous authority to withhold media-rights revenue from schools if certain conditions aren’t met.” Buckley also noted: “Unfortunately, the SAFE Act does not address employment, but the SCORE Act does. That’s one of the central reasons we are advocating for it.”
➤ Finally, Buckley defended the NCAA’s revenue distribution and governance as “direct democracy” and points out that lawsuits and legal uncertainty stalled progress but are easing. Furthermore, he projects continued revenue growth and emphasizes that effective rule enforcement requires limited liability protections from Congress.

Big South Commissioner Sherika Montgomery joined The Field of 68’s Rob Dauster and Jeff Goodman today and had this to say on the transfer portal and its regulation: “We do need a level of regulation. … I transferred during a time when there were five sports that were treated differently, and for the entire time, and my background being compliance and governance, I’ve always been supportive of equality. Either we all have to sit out or we all have the same level of free agency. Now, we all have the same level of free agency, but how do we balance that and its impact on not only just having a successful athletic career but also academically. I do think we need to strike a balance of what that looks like. Obviously, we are having to grapple with litigation from an eligibility standpoint. Obviously, a myriad of things are going on on Capitol Hill. You do have some bills that include transfer legislation, but make no doubt about it, the 4-in-4, I do think we have to do something about that and what that looks like.” (link)

Will overindulgent coaching contracts with ridiculously large buyouts ever be curbed? That’s the query posed by The Athletic’s Chris Vannini, who notes the new NIL era could finally be what alters the math. Vannini: “Schools hope the balance may finally shift in this cycle: Instead of asking for so much guaranteed long-term money, put it into the roster and increase the performance incentives. … Another option could be shorter contracts like the NFL. [...] The agents have a different outlook. The problem for schools is that this carousel is expected to be one of the busiest ever. You need leverage in negotiations, and desirable coaches are about to have a ton of it, especially if a handful of SEC and Big Ten jobs open, as is expected. It will be harder to convince the coach to take that new progressive contract if someone else can land him by doing things the way they’ve always been done.” One agent tells Vannini: “There are a number of schools that will do it all and have the ability to do it all. There is a premium for top coaches, and schools will be willing to pay for top talent in all areas.” More. (link)

On3’s Pete Nakos provides details on new guidance surrounding recent changes to the college football transfer portal, writing: “On3 has learned the NCAA has sent guidance to schools that the portal window for when a new head coach is hired starts five days after the coach is hired, provided that occurs between January 2 and June 30. For example, if a CFB program hires a new head coach on Nov. 25, the portal would not open until Jan. 2. But if a program makes a coaching change in the spring and hires a new head coach, players will not be delayed as long as the hire is before June 30. Previous NCAA rules stated that a 30-day transfer portal window immediately opened after a coaching change. Now players have to wait until a new coach is hired, and in some situations, until January.” (link)

The Big 12 has “issued a public reprimand and fine of Texas Tech and fined Kansas following their football game Saturday. Per release, Texas Tech and Kansas are both fined $25K. Tech's fine is for repeated instances of objects being thrown onto the playing surface, while Kansas has been fined for disparaging comments about the Conference and a member institution, and an inaccurate statement regarding a pocketknife by HC Lance Leipold.” Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark: “After a formal review, Texas Tech did not take sufficient steps to prevent and deter the repeated throwing of objects onto the field and team bench areas. Coach Leipold's comments questioned the integrity and professionalism of both the Conference and a member institution. Both actions warranted a financial penalty. The Big 12 Conference prioritizes integrity and will have no further comment on the matter.” (link)

Fresno State AD Garrett Klassy visits with College.town’s Kristen Eargle to highlight a key Senior Assoc. AD for Finance and Business Operations staff opening while providing his perspective on long-term growth opportunities and career development. Klassy: “I want people to succeed. Whatever makes people happy. … We’re in the people business, and whether that’s student-athletes, whether that’s coaches, whether that’s administrative staff, I want all people to achieve their dreams. I think in this business, a lot of times, the networking piece is always front and center … but I think outperforming your current job is even more critically important to your growth because, at the end of the day, people are going to call your references. They’re going to call to see what kind of job you do. So, if you outperform this role, then we’re going to add more to your plate and we’re going to create a staff that’s either underneath you or give you more responsibility.” Lots more from Klassy. Nike has renamed its 400-acre corporate headquarters in Beaverton, Ore., in honor of company co-founder Phil Knight. Per The Oregonian’s Matthew Kish, “the move comes as [Nike CEO Elliott] Hill continues to refocus the company on sports — one of Knight’s founding principles — and encourages employees to think more like entrepreneurs, one of Knight’s greatest strengths.” Hill: “This is more than a name change. It’s a tribute to the man whose vision created a global movement. And it’s a reminder — to every one of us who will walk these paths and run these fields — of what can happen when belief meets action. Every building, trail, creek and field was designed with intent – not as an office park, but as a campus that mirrors the soul of sport. Phil knew this company would need daily reminders of what makes it different. He built a place that celebrates motion, creativity and possibility – a living expression of Nike itself.” Per Kish, Nike will celebrate the official renaming with Knight in the spring when “the Oregon weather is a little more predictable.” More.
