The NCAA has sent messaging out to members that the 5-for-5 eligibility rule change that has been circulated isn’t coming to college sports for the foreseeable future. From the NCAA’s message: “The Division I Cabinet determined that, for the remainder of the current academic year and for the rosters competing during the 2026-27 academic year, it will maintain existing eligibility rules as they pertain to student-athletes competing in no more than four seasons of athletics competition in a particular sport over a consecutive five-year period. The Cabinet is studying these policies, along with several related eligibility rules, and will later consider what changes, if any, to implement for future academic years.” More. (link)

Tennessee AD Danny White held a presser this afternoon on the heels of Vols Baseball HC Tony Vitello finally making it official that he will be the new manager of the San Francisco Giants. White took the opportunity to provide clarity on UT’s support for baseball: “We distributed $750K to our baseball program. … Like all the most competitive programs in the country, we participated in front-loading last spring. Baseball was a beneficiary of that. We are supporting baseball, I think, well I know, at a higher level than anybody in America. We are full scholarships in baseball, all 34 spots. We were one of the first schools to sprint to that. I think we’re one of the only schools in the country that’s also doing cost of attendance on top of that. That was about a $1.2M new investment this year that a sport like women’s basketball wouldn’t have gotten. We do more with rev share and NIL packages for baseball on top of their rev share. I know what the competitive space is in the SEC and across the country and I know our baseball program is extremely well equipped.” White also said he’s asked Vols AHC Josh Elander to be a candidate, adding: “As quickly as I would like to move, I’d like Josh to be able to focus on his candidacy. He is in the middle of all this, too." AC Frank Anderson will serve as Interim HC. (link, link, link)

Nebraska AD Troy Dannen “says there are more than 100K ticket requests to see the Savannah Bananas in June via the team's lottery system. Nebraska and the Bananas ‘scripted’ their arrival in Lincoln to coincide with the start of the College World Series.” Per The Omaha World-Herald’s Evan Bland, Dannen also teased that next year volleyball “will play in a ‘non-traditional venue.’ No, he says, it's not Madison Square Garden. NU wants to take the ‘show on the road’ to promote the sport.” Additionally, Dannen noted volleyball “will take a ‘good, hard look’ at its ability to host future NCAA tourney matches at Pinnacle Bank Arena.” (link)

Big South Commissioner Sherika Montgomery joins SB Nation’s Mitchell Northam to dive into a handful of items. On how the league is monitoring increasingly popular women’s sports like wrestling and flag football: “So, having previously served on the committee on women’s athletics, I’m very familiar with the emerging sports for women. … Women’s flag football continuing to grow is something that we’re keeping a very close eye on. We have three to four additional member institutions that we’re actively engaging in discussions with NFL representatives. I think it’s going to be on the emerging list before we know it. And when a sport is on the emerging list, our student athletes receive revenue from the sport sponsorship, so it also aids and incentivizes our institutions being able to do that while helping them start those programs. So, we’re really excited about women’s flag football.” More. (link)

The West Coast Conference announces its new “We Rise in the West" brand identity centered around the four pillars of regional identity, innovative approach, student-athlete wellness and excellence. As part of its redefined brand identity, the conference is prioritizing the use of its full name on all external communication, with primary reference identifying the league as the West Coast Conference. In addition, the league has unveiled a new men’s and women’s basketball commercial with Santa Clara alum and NBA World Champion Jalen Williams reflecting on the storied history and current excitement around West Coast Conference basketball. League Commissioner Stu Jackson: “The West Coast Conference identity is cemented by our recognizable geography and our national excellence. We champion innovation that positions our programs for postseason success. … While we are a regionally-based conference, our achievements shine on the broader national stage. We prioritize student-athlete wellness as a keystone of our identity; creating environments where our student-athletes are seen and celebrated. We Rise in the West.” (link)

Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams takes umbrage with this remark from Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti on the league’s proposed private equity deal: “I don’t think about it much differently than if tomorrow our conference—or another conference—announced that they had tripled their media rights deals. I kind of think that’s what the responsibility of a commissioner is.” Novy-Williams reacts: “It’s a silly comparison. Under the proposed deal, the Big Ten would receive $2.4B up front from UC Investments, an arm of the University of California pension system. In return, it would give UC Investments a 10% equity stake in a new commercial enterprise, and would pay the money back, with interest, over the next 20 years. That’s very different from the league’s media rights deals, in which money flows in just one direction over a much shorter amount of time. Petitti obviously knows the difference. When I asked the Big Ten if he’d like to clarify the remark, I was told he was speaking more generally about revenue opportunities and a commissioner’s mandate to explore them all.” Speaking more broadly, Novy-Williams observes that “many leaders who once spoke vocally against institutional capital in college sports have changed their opinions over time. Some of those same people also seem less interested in explaining what their potential deals actually are, and more interested in saying what they aren’t. That goes double for the term ‘private equity.’ College sports has collectively agreed to define private equity by the narrowest of definitions, all while courting the very types of deals that are the hallmark of the industry.” (link)

CBS Sports’ Brandon Marcello spent last weekend inside the ACC’s Game Day Operations Center to provide a behind-the-scenes look of the league’s new initiative allowing a sneak peek on review deliberations during its broadcasts. For league Supervisor of Football Officials Alberto Riveron, the effort “shows America the due process” behind their actions. Riveron: “It shows Americans how we come to a decision. Pulling back the curtain on officiating is always a good thing. It shows everyone the preparation, the passion, the dedication and the ability to want to get it right. Just like the teams, we want to get it right. We need to get it right. This shows what we go through in order to get it right. [...] People understand coaches are human; they're going to make mistakes. Players are players; they're going to make mistakes; and we're going to make mistakes, too. But now they can see the process. That's important. When people realize there's a due process, and we follow that process to reach a decision, that's the most important thing. As long as coaches coach, players play and officials officiate, there's going to be mistakes in the game. It's a human element." Much more. (link)

In response to Louisville landing a 2026 commitment from G-League veteran London Johnson, Michigan State Men’s Basketball HC Tom Izzo blasted the new G-League to NCAA eligibility path as well as the decision makers behind it. Admitting he has no idea how it was allowed, Izzo remarked: “To me, it's ridiculous. It's embarrassing. I love my job. I don't respect my profession. And I don't respect whoever is doing this — whoever made those decisions — because they're afraid some lawyer is going to sue them. You hit a sore spot for me. The transfer portal is enough. We have no rules. And now we've just taken no rules and added more no rules. I feel bad if the kid came out early. Maybe we should help kids make good decisions instead of letting them make bad ones and say, 'Oh boy I'll just go back.' But the unintended consequences are the kids who are already there get squeezed out, lose opportunities and transfer — and we just keep going in circles. The NCAA has to regroup.” More. (link)

UCF has announced a price increase for some of its football season tickets for the 2026-27 campaign, according to the Orlando Sentinel’s Matt Murschel, who notes the ticket hike will be the first for the Knights since the 2024 season. Per an athletic department statement, “most sections will see a modest adjustment for the 2026 season based on demand” with Murschel reporting "the average price increase for the stadium’s most sought-after seats is $8 per game, and the largest total increase is $100 for the whole season. Over 16K seats will see no price increase next season. [...] UCF points out that the season tickets offer an average savings of 22% compared to single-game pricing and the school is providing a nine-month interest-free payment plan to help offset the price increases.” (link)

Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos says the company’s “not currently focused on big season packages” when it comes to sports, but are “focused on big live events.” Highlighting the recent Canelo Alvarez-Terence Crawford fight on the streaming service, Sarandos remarked: “We believe these big events that attract mass audiences are kind of differentially valuable for our members. … These events typically have outsized positives for conversation and for acquisition, and we strongly suspect retention.” Sarandos notes live events, of which “sports are a sub component,” are “only a small portion of our content spend,” adding: “It’s a very small portion of our 200 billion hours viewed. So it’s relatively small still, but hugely outsized impact.” (link)

Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy the league is “in the best place we can be in the current landscape. Given all the change around us, we’ve been able to hold onto the things that I think are important to be successful in the college basketball universe. I think about membership stability – we’ve got nothing going with expansion. No one’s leaving, as far as I know. ... We’ve got the TV deal, which was a vote of confidence by the networks and the quality of the programming [we offer]. I hear other commissioners talk about basketball being undervalued. We don’t think that’s the case here. … Having the focus on basketball at a time when other schools are pretty distracted by football, I think, is a plus. Now, we don’t have their resources, but we don’t have their expenses. Where that nets out, I don’t know. It’ll depend in part on how the College Sports Commission can effectively enforce the valid business purpose and reasonable range of compensation on third-party [NIL] payments. If that can stay managed, then it could be an advantage for a school that doesn’t have to pay football.” (link)

Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark says the amount of time it’s taking for the College Sports Commission to process NIL deals is “not a glitch. It’s a feature.” He adds: “The CSC is doing the critical work to ensure there's no pay for play in our industry. Deals that aren't above board are getting the scrutiny they deserve, this is a new year of enforcement. Complying with these new rules is not optional.” Yormark favors expanding March Madness if the “economics make sense,” adding: “There's nothing like the NCAA Tournament in all of sports, and I understand why fans may be apprehensive towards any change. That said, I think a format that improves access and economics without losing what makes the event so special is worth exploring.” Yormark on private equity: “I've done [the due diligence], and I did it early in fact, and we like where we are right now. That doesn't mean we're not exploring different options. But private equity for us doesn't work. We're very bullish on our future. We're not giving a stake to anyone. We want that upside.” (link)

More from MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher with The Field of 68’s Rob Dauster and Jeff Goodman as part of the league’s men’s basketball media day. On helping league schools with scheduling: “I saw it last year and I’m seeing it this year with our schedules in that we’re not getting the games we used to get. Plain and simple. I don't think it’s because of lack of effort. … That’s a problem. It’s a problem because of what the metrics are. Given where we are in today’s world of basketball, you would not have some of the emerging brands we’ve had in the past decade. … What can we do? We need to continue to re-emphasize and lean into what we can do and that is, in the case of our league, we need to be playing more home games. … We need to get more games on our court and let’s take care of business first there. We need to continue … to do what we can to find slots to put our teams in those events. Let’s get as many of those as we can. Quite frankly, are there ways to leverage scheduling in other sports to facilitate basketball scheduling? … Those types of things. You try to be as creative as you can. I believe our folks are working hard at it, but you’re touching on a concern that we continue to track and it is an issue.” (link)

KKR Private Equity Partner Ted Oberwager remarked during a Big East roundtable discussion that when it comes to PE, “if you’re going to take money, which is also going to require return on investment, and you spend that money, you should probably spend it in a way that there’s a return on investment. There’s a lot of different ways to look at that and think about that. If you take the view that that player is going to drive the attendance, which is going to drive the alumni participation, which is going to drive the enrollments…you better have the loop that says, ‘This actually makes sense.’ If it’s just, ‘I’ve got to keep up with the Joneses and they’ve got that person, so I’ve got to get this person. I need the money,’ that is going to be a recipe for disaster.” Elevate College & Global Marketplace CBO Jonathan Marks added: “If we think rights are going to continue to rise as much as we all think, how do you align all those? That’s a big problem with this Big Ten deal on the table – extending [the grant of rights] 10 years out until 2046. If I was a Big Ten university, I would say ‘Absolutely not. Let’s hold those rights knowing that they’re probably going to rise.’” (link)

Nebraska AD Troy Dannen comments on Football HC Matt Rhule’s response to questions about the open Penn State HC post: "Matt did exactly and has addressed it really I think highly appropriately. Matt and I talk 100 times a day. And there are things I won't share now that I know what we're doing, I know what he's doing, I feel like we're in a really good place. But I've also been through this 100 times. And when you have good people they're going to be attractive to other places. Part of our goal is to make this as attractive a place as possible so that when someone is maybe the apple of someone else's eye, they'd rather stay with you." Dannen also remarks: “Matt spoke about this at his press conference about committing all the resources necessary. And what he meant by that was how do we, besides the revenue share cap, how do we get real NIL deals for our athletes? How can Athlete A and Company B get together that 1) the athlete wants to see themselves on the billboard. But 2) to generate additional revenue above and beyond the cap? So when you're fighting that fight from a revenue standpoint you're all somewhat the same. … Matt's discussion was almost identical to what we talk to each other about, [which] is how do we find ways to utilize the resources we have here? And without, if you say, taxing the fans. We're not going back out to our fan base and say, 'Hey, you need to contribute to NIL.' Those days are past us." (link)

UNLV AD Erick Harper comments on the difficulty of retaining coaches: "A lot of it is about thinking ahead, trying to anticipate. ‘OK, we’re halfway through the season, and Coach has only lost one game. What schools might be interested in our coach? And will the coach be interested in the school? If so, how do I get in between?’ … That’s why it's important to be proactive with coaches' contracts. One thing I tell all of my coaches is that my door is always open. I’m approachable, and I’m open to listening to any challenge you’re experiencing. But if you don’t tell me what that challenge is, I can’t help you." (link); Accordingly, UNLV has extended Women’s Basketball HC Lindy La Rocque through the 2029-30 season. (link)

Relevent Sports says it has informed La Liga of the need to postpone the Dec. 20 match between Barcelona and Villarreal in Miami that was slated to be the first regular-season league game ever held outside a European league’s home country. Relevent, which has a 15-year joint venture with La Liga to promote the Spanish soccer league in North America, was set to promote and operate the historic match but explains in a statement: “Given the current uncertainty in Spain, there is insufficient time to properly execute an event of this scale. It would also be irresponsible to begin selling tickets without a confirmed match in place.” (link); The Athletic’s Ralph Russo consequently observes: “Problem solved for the possible scheduling conflict for Miami in the first round of the CFP.” (link)

Warner Bros. Discovery is exploring a potential sale of some or all of its media holdings after reportedly rejecting Paramount’s second offer for the company, according to the Wall Street Journal’s Joe Flint and Lauren Thomas. WBD CEO David Zaslav: “After receiving interest from multiple parties, we have initiated a comprehensive review of strategic alternatives to identify the best path forward to unlock the full value of our assets.” The company did not further specify the interest. Warner Chair Samuel Di Piazza Jr. says the company will still move forward with a split between its streaming and cable properties: “We continue to believe that our planned separation to create two distinct, leading media companies will create compelling value. That said, we determined taking these actions to broaden our scope is in the best interest of shareholders.” Flint and Thomas note that Comcast is “expected to explore the Warner assets” while Netflix “was seen by some industry observers as a potential suitor for Warner’s entertainment assets, though the streaming company’s co-chief executive Greg Peters played down the idea” earlier this month.
