#9: The Big 12 and Gonzaga “continue deep discussions,” according to Sports Illustrated’s Dellenger, who notes Navigate, the Zags’ consulting firm, is also part of the conversations. Dellenger also reports there will be a focus on conference expansion during the league’s meetings in West Virginia this week. “The Big 12’s pursuit of Gonzaga, UConn, San Diego State and UNLV is somewhat contingent on whether the league can grab any Pac-12 defections. The conference’s new TV contract calls for a pro-rata share for any Power 5 expansion members. Additions from the Group of 5 could mean splitting the television revenue by however many programs are added—a potential issue for some officials.” (link)

#8: The California Assembly voted to approve the College Athlete Protection Act that would allow student-athletes to receive payments from schools based on the amount of revenue their teams earn. USA Today’s Berkowitz reports that one change in the legislation states that if the “bill's financial formula resulted in athletes on any team at a school being owed revenue-sharing payments for any given year, the total amount of money designated for athlete compensation would have to be shared evenly between athletes on men's teams and athletes on women's teams. So, for instance, if only the football team's revenue triggered revenue-sharing payments, athletes on women's teams would benefit by the same overall amount.” Another piece of the legislation allows schools to use institutional funds to ensure “non-revenue-generating sports such as our Olympic sports are maintained and could receive additional funding without that money being counted as revenue in the financial formula used to determine whether revenue-sharing payments must be made.” The measure still has to pass the state Senate & get a signature from Governor Newsom. #7: The Athletic’s Feldman and Auerbach identify Washington State AD Chun, Washington AD Cohen, Pittsburgh AD Lyke, Villanova AD Jackson, UCLA AD Jarmond, TCU AD Donati, Wake Forest AD Currie and Florida Executive Assoc. AD for Administration Tealer as names to keep an eye on as USC searches for its next AD. Other candidates “worth a look,” according to Feldman and Auerbach, are UTSA AD Campos, Ohio AD Cromer, Texas Executive Senior Assoc. AD for Sports Administration Baumgartner, Army West Point AD Buddie and former UC Davis AD/current Golf Canada Chief Sport Officer Blue. While many of these names have circulated over the last several days, one that hasn’t is Jackson, about whom Feldman and Auerbach write: “No other AD who will get consideration knows USC as well as Jackson, a 50-year-old Pete Carroll protege. The one-time New England Patriots assistant coach played a vital role in USC’s athletic department raising $300M. … He also managed a massive renovation project of the Coliseum. But there might be some reluctance to bring back someone from that era who was involved in the hiring of Steve Sarkisian.” (link)

#6: How about this approach from Auburn’s football recruiting department, which created a graphic identifying the Tigers as the only school in the SEC with a Buc-ee’s gas station. The message landed with 2024 Texas high school recruit Campbell, who is from Refugio,Texas, not far from the first Buc-ee’s in Clute, Texas, and his retweet of the graphic set the ball rolling. As you can imagine, Ole Miss football HC Kiffin pounced, having his graphics team mimic the message boasting the Chevron gas station in Oxford as the only one that sells chicken on a stick. USF HC Golesh bragged about the Bulls as the only school with an on-campus Publix grocery store. Good stuff. (link)

#5: The Des Moines Register’s Leistikow and The Athletic’s Dochterman discuss the Iowa AD search as Dochterman points to Hawkeyes Deputy AD/COO Goetz’s “really incredible background” and notes she does a “really good job of dealing with people. Most people that deal with her really respect her, and she’s not afraid to ask for advice, but also she makes strong decisions. So, she is, to me, I think the favorite. … I won’t say it’s a done deal, but she’s easily the frontrunner here.” (link)

#4: Neinas Sports Services President/former Big Eight Commissioner Neinas, whom the Los Angeles Times’ Kartje and McCollough describe as former USC AD Bohn’s mentor, reacts to Bohn’s departure: “Well, I’d say, number one, it’s bull—, but then I’m not objective. He brought in Lincoln Riley, which was one hell of a move, and turned the football program around, created much more interest in Trojan athletics. And then the opportunity to triple their income going to the Big Ten Conference, putting the institution at a very solid financial condition, and he’s voted athletic director of the year by his peers. You’d say the guy is on a roll, wouldn’t you?” Regarding allegations of a toxic work environment, Neinas remarks: “You can talk to anybody in the college athletic business, and they will tell you that Mike Bohn is one of the friendliest people in the business. … He has a great sensitivity about him, which makes the accusations relative to his treatment of women suspect in my opinion.” Lots more.
