Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger provides this summary of congressional Democrats’ news conference: “Either of the two introduced college sports bills – the Republican-authored SCORE Act & the Democrat-authored SAFE Act – is unlikely, in its current form, to pass Congress by the mid-term elections next November. Authors and sponsors of the Democrat-backed SAFE Act have *not* held productive discussions with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) over a third piece of bipartisan legislation to govern college sports (though Cruz does continue to hold dialogue with others).” (link)

Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark says he would support a College Football Playoff format in which the Big 12 receives the same number of AQs as the Big Ten, SEC and ACC. “I’d consider that. I’ve always said you’ve got to earn it on the field. Nothing should be predetermined coming into the season. If there was a conversation about a format that gave the power conferences the same amount of AQs, I’m all ears.” (link)

Visiting with The Field of 68’s Rob Dauster and Jeff Goodman as part of the league’s men’s basketball media day, MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher commented on what could done to ensure league programs have access to an expanded NCAA Tournament: “I would argue that wherever you draw the line, there’s going to be deserving teams below that line. I guess I’m a little bit agnostic on expand it or don’t expand it. What we have works pretty darned well. To some extent, we have such a large field for the upper end of the food chain, it certainly waters down their regular season a good bit. I don’t think it does for us. We’ve had updates on what they’re thinking with brackets and so on, but that’s gonna be a work in progress of ‘ok what happens if they do expand it and how does it play into it?’ I don’t think it’s being expanded to ensure that the Mid-American Conference gets a second or third or fourth team in. Perhaps we do. That would be great. Whatever comes out of this, our focus needs to be we go into those match-ups and let’s win those games. … Let’s go and win that unit and go to the next round and win that next game. Whatever we do, I’m gonna be a glass half-full. Let’s figure out a way to go into that tournament and let’s be as successful as we can. Let’s earn as many units and advance as far as we can.” (link)

More from America East Commissioner Brad Walker, who points out that continuity is a competitive edge on the women’s side, where transfer churn is lighter than men’s, helping top programs sustain success. “They want to get their degrees from these programs. And I think that adds to the ability of our top programs to stay pretty good over an extended period of time, right?” On the introduction of units to the women’s tournament, Walker says: “I think it's long overdue. … I am curious to see if schools or women's basketball programs strategically approach the season differently than they have before now that money's tied to it. They were still always trying to win. They were still trying to compete and win those games in the postseason. But I'm curious to see if there's a little bit more motivation if things get tighter or do they change how they approach the postseason now that money's tied to it. I'm most interested in once that money starts coming in, what kind of investment changes [there will be] with women's basketball on each of our campuses?” (link)

Indiana has released full details of Football HC Curt Cignetti’s new eight-year contract. The deal includes a $500K base salary, outside marketing and promotional income that starts at $9.65M and rises $100K-per-year and a $1M annual retention bonus beginning on Nov. 30, 2025, with the contract starting on Dec. 1. From all three sources, Cignetti will earn a total of $11.15M in Year 1 on the way to $12.1M in the final year of the contract. His coach-end buyout starts at $15M and decreases by $3M each year until 2029 when it drops from $6M to $4M, and then decreases by half the remainder per year until reaching zero in the final year of his pact. If fired without cause by IU, Cignetti would net the total remainder of the contract. The contract also states that within 120 days of a CFP semifinal appearance, coach and school are required to complete a "good faith review and negotiation" that would keep Cignetti's salary "no less than third" among FBS coaches. If Indiana fails to hold up its end of the bargain, Cignetti is free and clear to terminate his contract with no penalty. Indiana is required to do the same with Cignetti's staff pool, but the bar is lower -- fifth in the Big Ten or 10th nationally. More. (link)

With upcoming renovations to South Carolina’s Williams-Brice Stadium set to eliminate about 4,100 seats from the west-lower stands and school officials “putting up for grabs every seat in the west-lower side” instead of just displacing those people whose seats are being lost, The State’s Jordan Kaye asks “why does someone on the west-lower side need to be displaced if the renovation isn’t going to touch their seats?” Gamecock Club CEO Wayne Hiott says it wouldn’t be fair to only displace those whose seats will physically be affected, remarking: “How do you justify that? You really can’t. So the decision was made by The Gamecock Club board, which is made up of Gamecock Club members, that we’ve got to reset and give those that are affected priority in the process, and work with them through the process to try and land them in the best place possible.” Told to contact Gamecock Club representatives over the changes via a season-ticket holder e-mail, USC alum Stewart Kennemore did just that, commenting: “We could not get an answer. No solution. Nothing. Just pretty much telling us that we’re screwed. ... It was to the point where we were asking him, ‘Are they going to be more?’ All he kept saying was that, yes, the ticket was going to be more. It felt like, when we were talking to the guy, that he was trying to direct us to get us out of section 8 to somewhere in the upper deck. And we explained to the kid, either we have these seats at the price we have them — or whatever small increase — or we’re not going to the games anymore.” More. (link)

The SEC has fined Texas A&M $50K and issued a public reprimand of Football HC Mike Elko after NCAA National Coordinator of Football Officiating Steve Shaw determined the Aggies were in violation of the rule governing feigning injuries during last Saturday’s contest at Arkansas. In response, the Aggies issued the following statement: “We respect the SEC’s decision and understand the importance of upholding the integrity of the game. While we accept the ruling, we do not agree with the decision and want to be clear that we never coach or instruct our players to feign injury. Texas A&M Football remains firmly committed to the highest standards of sportsmanship, competitiveness, and integrity. We’ll use this as an opportunity to review our processes and ensure we continue to represent our great university and the SEC with class and accountability.” (link)

Though individual contracts have yet to be signed per the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s Eric Kolenich, the three parties have come to agreement on three matters: “VCU will lease CarMax Park from the Economic Development Authority for about $400K a year so that its baseball team can play there; VCU will agree to pay the Squirrels about $300K a year as part of an operating agreement; and VCU will sell Sports Backers Stadium to the city’s EDA for $25M.” Kolenich adds: “Once VCU has collected the $25M, it will use the funds to continue building its athletics village across Hermitage Road. Fox Sports CEO Eric Shanks sat down for a wide-ranging conversation with MoffettNathanson analysts Michael Nathanson and Robert Fishman at Puck’s In the Arena event and had the following to say about the College Football Playoff: “I’m very much in favor of expanding the CFP. I don’t see any reason why the CFP can’t be 24 teams. You can fit it into the schedule. You can have automatic qualifiers from the different conferences. There’s a good model to expand the playoff, and still allow some of the Group of 5 to be able to get in. That would give the CFP the opportunity to have more networks involved. Still, with 24 teams, you wouldn’t have an enormous amount of games, but I think you can get more people promoting and marketing the playoffs than there are today.” Shanks was also asked about his thoughts on taking equity stakes in leagues and replied: “We’re not a fund. We’re not P.E. When opportunities come up and we think that we can add value and create a like-minded partnership, then we take a good look at it. Probably the most transformative for the entire industry is our relationship with the Big Ten. The Big Ten Network is now 20 years old, and it’s been extremely fruitful. It set off a string of copycat networks, and I would argue none of them have been as successful as BTN.” (link)

America East Commissioner Brad Walker joins The Field of 68 for the league’s hoops media day and says that parity in the league is on the rise with Maine, Bryant and Albany pushing Vermont, but the transfer era makes preseason forecasts shaky. The offseason’s biggest issue was NIL, and Walker explains, “It’s just a new space – revenue generation tied to getting the best possible players, but then also it’s retention. How do we keep the players that we develop in our programs under some of the really good coaches that we have in this league?” To that end, Walker says the league is focused on “building a culture where the kids do want to come back because you're not going to be able to attract them in the same way with the finances that you would. But I think you probably run into a lot of situations and you guys know a lot of coaches around the country who stay connected to their kids who transfer out. Sometimes that new situation might not be as good as the situation they were in, and you find kids that are missing it. We have kids that transfer out and then and then come back. We have kids that transfer out and then they're showing up supporting some of their old teammates.” (link)

This plan outlines new priorities to reflect our new reality while setting up the ambitious goals that will propel our department and our student-athletes to success." (link)

Collegiate Sports Connect and NACMA continue to analyze every Power 4 conference’s 2025 football season ticket pricing by examining ticket maps around the Big Ten. Here are some key takeaways from the B1G…
➤ Average cost per seat to sit on the home 50 halfway up the lower bowl: $1,581
• Most expensive: Ohio State $4,500
• These are considered club seats, and while there is no gift component associated with that amount, fans must be Buckeye Club members at the Big Ten Champions Level or above ($3,000 annual giving) to be eligible to purchase, and must sign for a four-year term.
• Least expensive: Indiana ($726 = $250 (gift) + $476 (ticket))
• Worth noting, again, for many/most schools, anybody can't buy a season ticket in this location without accruing significant priority points or making an additional significant donation.
➤ Average cost of the least expensive season ticket option: $358
• Most expensive: Michigan ($740 = $80 (gift) + $660 (ticket))
• Least expensive: 2 under $100 (Illinois - $98 = ticket, no donation required; Maryland - $99 = ticket, no donation required)
➤ USC's pricing model differs from the rest of the conference, requiring fans to be at a Trojan Fund membership level for the right to purchase tickets in a particular tier.
• For example, only donors who give $20K+ annually have the ability to purchase tickets (for $950 each) in Tier 1.
• All others have a per-seat price (ticket price + required donation) or, in the case of Purdue and Northwestern, only list a single price without breakdown.
➤ Only Michigan and Rutgers specify a required seat donation amount for even the least expensive season ticket.
➤ Northwestern has had to be creative with their seating inventory: the highest sticker price is $6,500 and includes four seats at "loge tables" in the south endzone that feature all-inclusive food & beverage. The cheapest seat is $500 in the north endzone. (link)

College sports rivalries are “emerging as marketable assets, and athletic departments are finding ideal partners eager to invest,” writes NIL Wire’s Kyle Rowland. Learfield EVP of Global Partnerships Shawn Hegan: “For sponsors, rivalry games give them access to two fan bases, typically in their business footprint, with all-sport rivalry programs delivering a year-long conversation with fans. College rivalries often have unique, storied traditions that tie the fan bases together, and the sponsor brands can build on that passion to meet sponsor goals.” Bowling Green AD Derek van der Merwe: “In college sports, we’ve been slow to fully onboard the necessity of the business part of what we have to do to survive. Now that we fully acknowledge the fact that this, whether it’s revenue sharing or NIL deals, has now become so inherent in what we’re trying to do to build programs, it’s much more normalized. … Today, given the expectations, the growth of expenses, the challenges associated with fully funding the operation, creativity and innovation are at a premium now. Any partner that’s willing to step into this space to support it, we’ve accepted that. I think that there is an increased demand to find alternative revenue streams in order to maximize revenue yield and to support what we consider as ever-increasing costs and ever-increasing challenges of operating in this climate that is radically changing. We all acknowledge that we have to be creative, we have to be innovative. And if we’re not going to do it, someone else will.” More. (link)

North Carolina was set to receive at least $250K from EverWonder Studio—the production company behind a planned documentary series on Football HC Bill Belichick—as part of an arrangement that also allows Belichick to obtain and use the footage at a later date. Sportico’s Daniel Libit: “According to the agreement, executed on Aug. 11 and obtained through a public records request, UNC granted EverWonder access to its facilities during the 2025 football season so the company could film content for a planned documentary series that would ‘showcase the University and the next chapter of Coach Belichick’s coaching legacy and his life.’” A report last week indicated that filming was still going on despite Hulu’s withdrawal, but UNC in a statement late Monday said production had “paused,” though the school and EverWonder “remain in contact with the possibility of continuing in the future.” Libit also notes a “UNC spokesperson did not respond to Sportico’s questions about whether the production company had paid it any money or whether any footage has been transferred to either the university or [Belichick’s] TCE Rights Management.” (link)

HoopsHQ’s Andy Katz catches up with 11 Men’s Basketball HCs to get a feel for how they will approach the new replay challenge rule, which affords them one challenge per game. Kansas HC Bill Self notes there is “going to be a lot of strategy with this. Will you use it early on? Probably no. It’s going to take time to get used to it, but it’s a good rule.’’ USC HC Eric Musselman said he would probably designate a staff member to be the person to inform him on whether to challenge. He has also talked to coaching staffs of the San Diego Padres and the LA Clippers about how they use the challenge. Villanova HC Kevin Willard: “You have to be strategic. We’re going to practice this so we have it down. If you’re wrong and you lose a timeout then it could be really disastrous for you.’’ UCLA HC Mick Cronin adds: “You better save [a timeout]. You’ve got to save it for significance. Now they can’t go to the monitor on an out-of-bounds play in the last two minutes, so that’s where you’ve got to save it. I don’t know if it’s reactionary or not, but everything is about keeping these games in a two-hour window.’’ (link)

Montana Football HC Bobby Hauck responds to Sacramento State President Luke Wood’s reference to the Grizzlies as the Pandas by calling Wood a “clown,” adding that the comment is just “outside noise” and that Sac State should worry more about “the riot” that happened (during a postgame concert last weekend) instead of “taunting Montana.” (link)

➤ Southern has parted ways with Football HC Terrence Graves and promoted Fred McNair to Interim HC. (link)
➤ The Athletic’s Andrew Baggarly reports that Tennessee Baseball HC Tony Vitello has been offered the San Francisco Giants’ job and “the ball is in his court,” adding: “Everything we hear is that he does want this and this isn’t just a way to drive up his Tennessee salary. But the Giants are going to have to make it worth his while.” Baggarly also notes that MLB doesn’t typically like teams to make big announcements on days with postseason games, so “maybe by the end of the week we have some resolution.” Will UT counter the Giants’ offer? “They’re going to try to keep him. They’re going to basically do what they can to make it attractive for him to stay. … I think that’s one of the things that’s probably happening right now.” (link)

Arizona State breaks down its $100M of Desert Financial Arena renovations (pending regents’ approval), with work scheduled mostly each April–October so teams won’t relocate and full completion targeted for December 2029. The project modernizes fan and athlete experience and features new premium seating (loge boxes, club level, courtside), a new court, upgraded restrooms and concessions, a center-hung video board with ribbon boards, locker-room and A/C upgrades, expanded ADA access and more. Here are the phases
➤ Phase 1 (May–Oct 2026): Replace the playing court; swap 729 lower-bowl seats for padded seats with cupholders; add 200 wider premium seats with +2" legroom; and install four “Hollywood” courtside seats between the ASU bench and the scorer’s table.
➤ Phase 2 (Summer 2027): Renovate existing restrooms, build two new men’s and women’s bathrooms, and install a new sound system. (Plans also call for loge boxes on the concourse above the lower bowl—totaling ~120 seats with TVs/tables—and “theater boxes” with wider padded seats at the bottom of the upper bowl.)
➤ Phase 3 (Summer 2027): Create a court-level club with direct access to courtside seating for premium ticket holders; upgrade concessions (including space for self-serve kiosks after office relocations); upgrade locker rooms; install a center-hung video board and ribbon boards on both sides of the arena.
