The DII (link) and DIII (link) Management Councils have approved legislation to permit student-athletes and athletics department staff members to bet on professional sports, paving the way for the new rule to take effect on November 1 for all three divisions. Slippery Rock (DII) AD/Council Chair Roberta Page: "Our action reflects alignment across divisions while maintaining the principles that guide college sports. This change recognizes the realities of today's sports environment without compromising our commitment to protecting the integrity of college competition or the well-being of student-athletes." Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark joins CBS’ Matt Norlander from Big 12 Media Days and says he’s “very bullish on the CSC. It’s a bit of a startup. He’s building out infrastructure. We do need the participation agreement to be signed so they know the rules and the penalties that go with it. The clearinghouse is working. Over 9,000 deals have been cleared, valued at about $63M. About 450 deals were not cleared. Anything that smells of pay-for-play is being scrutinized at the highest levels – and it should.” Yormark reiterates his support for a 5+11 College Football Playoff format, and he expects the next two CFPs to remain at 12 teams. “We need to make a decision on ‘26–27 by December 1. I don’t see us making any changes between now and then. Any discussion that we do have would probably affect the ‘27–28 football season.” In discussing hoops specifically, Yormark asserts: “At the heart of this conference, it’s basketball. They’re all investing at the highest levels and they understand that there’s a direct correlation between investment and performance. If you think about the top high school players in the country last year, we have eight of the top 20. … We’re the number one men’s basketball conference in America. And in fact, I always tell people that'll listen that we're the second-best league in the country behind the NBA. … We’re the most distributed men’s basketball conference in America right now.” Full Q&A. “UNLV may have found a niche as the best place for good coaches on the rebound to resurrect their careers, win big and leave every few years,” according to Yahoo’s Dan Wolken, who adds: “For a program in the Group of 5, it wouldn’t be the worst fate. And [Rebels AD Erick] Harper said he’s seen the dividends, particularly as complex as head coaching jobs are these days, of hiring people with experience.” Harper: “With high-profile coaches, yeah it’s stressful [to hear speculation]. But you have to, again, you have to always expect the unexpected, and even though that's a cliché, and be prepared to know what direction you want to go in if something happens, if somebody decides to take another job, or if you have to make a decision. If something were to happen, I think it's still going to be important for us to find the right guy at the right time. Is it plug and play? You don't have to come in and ask for facilities, because we have those. What’s important for whoever the coach that we have is that they have the right tools to be able to do what they need to do based on who they are as a coach.” Rebels Football HC Dan Mullen’s “desert renewal” will likely earn him interest from Power 4 schools, but he tells Wolken: “You know, grass isn’t always green around the other side. I like this. I like the team. I like the program. We’re a ‘have’ of college football. I mean, just walk around [this facility]. I have great administrative support. I don’t need to chase, you know? I want to enjoy this, and with what we have, I’m able to." (link)

More from Tennessee AD Danny White in yesterday’s press conference to discuss Baseball HC Tony Vitello’s departure for the San Francisco Giants as the Vols have engaged Parker Executive Search to assist with finding Vitello’s successor. “They are already working on a plan on the logistics. I use them to help set up interviews. They don’t pick who we interview. I do that. I’ve been assessing, I’m always assessing, the market for all of our sports. But I’ve been assessing knowing this was a possibility for a while.” White on parameters for the search: “I’m not putting myself in a box with anything right now. This is kind of unprecedented to have a coaching transition this time of year. So I don’t know how this plays out.” Lots more. (link)

Elevate has released its “New Models, New Leaders: The Future of College Athletics” white paper, which states that DI athletic departments have entered a “new era” after the House settlement and must rethink how they’re structured and staffed. The paper claims that “no area of global sport has evolved more rapidly in the past decade than Division I college athletics” due to post-House revenue sharing; private capital flowing into venues; sponsorship asset commercialization; and the compounding effects of realignment and the transfer portal, each of which is stressing legacy operating models. In response, Elevate submits three restructuring archetypes…
➤ A new entity tied to the school to manage privatized functions; a longstanding affiliated foundation/DSO; and an internal, rebranded business unit. Further, Elevate favors adding corporate-style roles, such as CFOs, COOs, CROs, GMs and NIL Directors, to professionalize operations. It closes by emphasizing mission alignment and culture fit as schools introduce new governance and leadership to handle revenue, risk, and regulation.
➤ The paper also offers a primer on revenue-sharing mechanics and the new College Sports Commission; how schools are building “firewalls,” athlete licensing agreements, and NIL oversight to maximize compensation and remain competitive; why private capital is targeting venue overhauls (naming rights, year-round programming, sponsorship inventory); and a practical menu of governance options with benefits/drawbacks.
➤ The talent section details how ADs are widening their benches with executives from pro leagues, consulting, and finance to accelerate decisions and close skill gaps.
➤ Finally, Elevate emphasizes that “the pageantry of game day traditions, the deep connection to local communities, and the sense of identity and belonging for alumni and students remain differentiators professional sports cannot replicate. These enduring elements are not in conflict with operating model changes; in fact, they are part of what makes the investment in new models worthwhile.”

VCU AD Ed McLaughlin attended a ceremonial signing for Richmond’s new Diamond District. While details still need to be worked out, and the overall operating agreements have not been signed, plans to move forward are underway, and McLaughlin is confident the project will finish around the agreed-upon time. “Right now, our guys don’t have their own clubhouse. So we have to take stuff back and forth to the Siegel Center, where our locker room is. Now we’ll have our own clubhouse and we’ll have our own coaches’ offices. We’ll have a home here.” (link)

The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel shares some college football viewership data, noting that through Week 8, there have been 27 games with 5M+ viewers. “Distribution of games by network: ABC: 18; CBS: 3; FOX: 2; ESPN: 2; NBC: 2. Distribution of teams by conference: SEC: 32; B1G: 12; ACC: 7; Notre Dame: 2; Big 12: 1 (TCU vs. North Carolina).” Also from Mandel: “Nielsen changed how it calculates ratings this year which is inflating some numbers, but CFB viewership exploded beginning in 2023: Games with 5M+ viewers through Week 8: 2019: 14; 2021: 13; 2022: 10; 2023: 20; 2024: 19; 2025: 27.” (link)

Morehead State has renamed its football stadium in honor of alumnus and former Super Bowl MVP Phil Simms. Eagles AD Kelly Wells: “Few people, if anyone, have brought as much recognition to Morehead State University as Phil Simms. Not every school can say they have a Super Bowl MVP in their alumni family, but MSU can. Since his time here, Phil has dedicated time and resources to continuing the support of the Blue and Gold. He hosts camps in the summertime, visits with our coaching staff and athletes, and made Morehead State a priority in his life." (link)

The NHL has partnered with Kalshi and Polymarket, becoming the first major U.S. sports league to license its trademarks to prediction markets, and the Wall Street Journal’s Alexander Osipovich notes: “So far, Kalshi has avoided using trademarked terms such as ‘NFL’ or ‘Super Bowl’ on its app and website. Instead, it uses terms such as ‘Pro football champion’ and refers to teams by their cities. The NFL and other leagues have long been vigilant about potential infringement of their intellectual property.” NHL President of Business Keith Wachtel asserts that “prediction markets are here to stay” but insists sportsbooks remain “important partners” of the NHL. American Gaming Commission President Bill Miller calls the deals “deeply concerning,” adding: “Contrary to the league’s claims, the future of these platforms is far from certain, evidenced by the legal proceedings in multiple states, the views of well over half of the nation’s attorneys general, and state regulators determining these platforms to be illegal.” (link)

The NCAA has sent messaging out to members that the 5-for-5 eligibility rule change that has been circulated isn’t coming to college sports for the foreseeable future. From the NCAA’s message: “The Division I Cabinet determined that, for the remainder of the current academic year and for the rosters competing during the 2026-27 academic year, it will maintain existing eligibility rules as they pertain to student-athletes competing in no more than four seasons of athletics competition in a particular sport over a consecutive five-year period. The Cabinet is studying these policies, along with several related eligibility rules, and will later consider what changes, if any, to implement for future academic years.” More. (link)

Tennessee AD Danny White held a presser this afternoon on the heels of Vols Baseball HC Tony Vitello finally making it official that he will be the new manager of the San Francisco Giants. White took the opportunity to provide clarity on UT’s support for baseball: “We distributed $750K to our baseball program. … Like all the most competitive programs in the country, we participated in front-loading last spring. Baseball was a beneficiary of that. We are supporting baseball, I think, well I know, at a higher level than anybody in America. We are full scholarships in baseball, all 34 spots. We were one of the first schools to sprint to that. I think we’re one of the only schools in the country that’s also doing cost of attendance on top of that. That was about a $1.2M new investment this year that a sport like women’s basketball wouldn’t have gotten. We do more with rev share and NIL packages for baseball on top of their rev share. I know what the competitive space is in the SEC and across the country and I know our baseball program is extremely well equipped.” White also said he’s asked Vols AHC Josh Elander to be a candidate, adding: “As quickly as I would like to move, I’d like Josh to be able to focus on his candidacy. He is in the middle of all this, too." AC Frank Anderson will serve as Interim HC. (link, link, link)

Nebraska AD Troy Dannen “says there are more than 100K ticket requests to see the Savannah Bananas in June via the team's lottery system. Nebraska and the Bananas ‘scripted’ their arrival in Lincoln to coincide with the start of the College World Series.” Per The Omaha World-Herald’s Evan Bland, Dannen also teased that next year volleyball “will play in a ‘non-traditional venue.’ No, he says, it's not Madison Square Garden. NU wants to take the ‘show on the road’ to promote the sport.” Additionally, Dannen noted volleyball “will take a ‘good, hard look’ at its ability to host future NCAA tourney matches at Pinnacle Bank Arena.” (link)

Big South Commissioner Sherika Montgomery joins SB Nation’s Mitchell Northam to dive into a handful of items. On how the league is monitoring increasingly popular women’s sports like wrestling and flag football: “So, having previously served on the committee on women’s athletics, I’m very familiar with the emerging sports for women. … Women’s flag football continuing to grow is something that we’re keeping a very close eye on. We have three to four additional member institutions that we’re actively engaging in discussions with NFL representatives. I think it’s going to be on the emerging list before we know it. And when a sport is on the emerging list, our student athletes receive revenue from the sport sponsorship, so it also aids and incentivizes our institutions being able to do that while helping them start those programs. So, we’re really excited about women’s flag football.” More. (link)

The West Coast Conference announces its new “We Rise in the West" brand identity centered around the four pillars of regional identity, innovative approach, student-athlete wellness and excellence. As part of its redefined brand identity, the conference is prioritizing the use of its full name on all external communication, with primary reference identifying the league as the West Coast Conference. In addition, the league has unveiled a new men’s and women’s basketball commercial with Santa Clara alum and NBA World Champion Jalen Williams reflecting on the storied history and current excitement around West Coast Conference basketball. League Commissioner Stu Jackson: “The West Coast Conference identity is cemented by our recognizable geography and our national excellence. We champion innovation that positions our programs for postseason success. … While we are a regionally-based conference, our achievements shine on the broader national stage. We prioritize student-athlete wellness as a keystone of our identity; creating environments where our student-athletes are seen and celebrated. We Rise in the West.” (link)

Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams takes umbrage with this remark from Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti on the league’s proposed private equity deal: “I don’t think about it much differently than if tomorrow our conference—or another conference—announced that they had tripled their media rights deals. I kind of think that’s what the responsibility of a commissioner is.” Novy-Williams reacts: “It’s a silly comparison. Under the proposed deal, the Big Ten would receive $2.4B up front from UC Investments, an arm of the University of California pension system. In return, it would give UC Investments a 10% equity stake in a new commercial enterprise, and would pay the money back, with interest, over the next 20 years. That’s very different from the league’s media rights deals, in which money flows in just one direction over a much shorter amount of time. Petitti obviously knows the difference. When I asked the Big Ten if he’d like to clarify the remark, I was told he was speaking more generally about revenue opportunities and a commissioner’s mandate to explore them all.” Speaking more broadly, Novy-Williams observes that “many leaders who once spoke vocally against institutional capital in college sports have changed their opinions over time. Some of those same people also seem less interested in explaining what their potential deals actually are, and more interested in saying what they aren’t. That goes double for the term ‘private equity.’ College sports has collectively agreed to define private equity by the narrowest of definitions, all while courting the very types of deals that are the hallmark of the industry.” (link)

CBS Sports’ Brandon Marcello spent last weekend inside the ACC’s Game Day Operations Center to provide a behind-the-scenes look of the league’s new initiative allowing a sneak peek on review deliberations during its broadcasts. For league Supervisor of Football Officials Alberto Riveron, the effort “shows America the due process” behind their actions. Riveron: “It shows Americans how we come to a decision. Pulling back the curtain on officiating is always a good thing. It shows everyone the preparation, the passion, the dedication and the ability to want to get it right. Just like the teams, we want to get it right. We need to get it right. This shows what we go through in order to get it right. [...] People understand coaches are human; they're going to make mistakes. Players are players; they're going to make mistakes; and we're going to make mistakes, too. But now they can see the process. That's important. When people realize there's a due process, and we follow that process to reach a decision, that's the most important thing. As long as coaches coach, players play and officials officiate, there's going to be mistakes in the game. It's a human element." Much more. (link)

In response to Louisville landing a 2026 commitment from G-League veteran London Johnson, Michigan State Men’s Basketball HC Tom Izzo blasted the new G-League to NCAA eligibility path as well as the decision makers behind it. Admitting he has no idea how it was allowed, Izzo remarked: “To me, it's ridiculous. It's embarrassing. I love my job. I don't respect my profession. And I don't respect whoever is doing this — whoever made those decisions — because they're afraid some lawyer is going to sue them. You hit a sore spot for me. The transfer portal is enough. We have no rules. And now we've just taken no rules and added more no rules. I feel bad if the kid came out early. Maybe we should help kids make good decisions instead of letting them make bad ones and say, 'Oh boy I'll just go back.' But the unintended consequences are the kids who are already there get squeezed out, lose opportunities and transfer — and we just keep going in circles. The NCAA has to regroup.” More. (link)

UCF has announced a price increase for some of its football season tickets for the 2026-27 campaign, according to the Orlando Sentinel’s Matt Murschel, who notes the ticket hike will be the first for the Knights since the 2024 season. Per an athletic department statement, “most sections will see a modest adjustment for the 2026 season based on demand” with Murschel reporting "the average price increase for the stadium’s most sought-after seats is $8 per game, and the largest total increase is $100 for the whole season. Over 16K seats will see no price increase next season. [...] UCF points out that the season tickets offer an average savings of 22% compared to single-game pricing and the school is providing a nine-month interest-free payment plan to help offset the price increases.” (link)

Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos says the company’s “not currently focused on big season packages” when it comes to sports, but are “focused on big live events.” Highlighting the recent Canelo Alvarez-Terence Crawford fight on the streaming service, Sarandos remarked: “We believe these big events that attract mass audiences are kind of differentially valuable for our members. … These events typically have outsized positives for conversation and for acquisition, and we strongly suspect retention.” Sarandos notes live events, of which “sports are a sub component,” are “only a small portion of our content spend,” adding: “It’s a very small portion of our 200 billion hours viewed. So it’s relatively small still, but hugely outsized impact.” (link)
