OVC Commissioner Beth DeBauche has resigned effective immediately after 16 years leading the league to focus on family matters. Lindenwood President/OVC Board of Presidents and Chancellors Chair John Porter: “Beth DeBauche has been a transformative leader for the Ohio Valley Conference. Her vision, integrity, and dedication to the student-athlete experience have left an enduring legacy. We are deeply grateful for her years of service and leadership.” Assoc. Commissioner for Football, Basketball and Baseball Greg Walter will serve as Acting Commissioner as the league “will be engaging an outside firm to conduct a national search for an Interim Commissioner, which will help set the course for future leadership of the OVC.” (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker on today’s NBA gambling arrests: “We are grateful for federal law enforcement's efforts to stamp out illegal sports betting, and I am proud that the NCAA continues to have the most aggressive competition integrity policies in place. The Association has and will continue to pursue sports betting violations using a layered integrity monitoring program for over 22,000 contests, but we still need more states, regulators and gaming companies to help in this effort by eliminating risky prop bets to reduce opportunities for manipulation.” (link); In case you haven’t seen the news, Portland Trail Blazers HC Chauncey Billups, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier and former Cleveland Cavaliers player and AC Damon Jones have been arrested as part of a pair of wide-ranging investigations related to illegal sports betting and rigged poker games backed by the Mafia, authorities announced Thursday. Senate Democrats are pushing back on NCAA lobbying efforts in support of the SCORE Act, reports Ross Dellenger for On3, who notes during an “hour-long virtual news conference on Tuesday, three Senate Democrats – [Richard] Blumenthal (D-CT), Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and Cory Booker (D-NJ) – as well as representatives of several professional players associations shot holes into the SCORE Act. Most of their issues targeted the legislation’s intention to ‘roll back,’ as they put it, freedoms for athletes by granting the NCAA antitrust protections to enforce its rules, most notably policies over player compensation (NIL) and movement (transferring).” Cantwell: “The SCORE Act is not what we think it is. It’s not the solution for the athlete.” Dellenger continues: “That said, the Republican-authored SCORE Act, which the NCAA supports, continues to gain momentum in the Republican-controlled House, and most expect it to be introduced onto the floor for a vote as soon as the federal government returns from its shutdown. In fact, most recent agreed-upon amendments to the legislation have appeased, at least for now, a group of House Republicans who had pushed back against the bill after public criticism of it from Texas billionaire businessman Cody Campbell.” Blumenthal: “I can pretty well guarantee the SCORE Act ain’t going to make it through the United States Senate.” More. Wisconsin Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin has ordered a review of "programs and policies associated with the student-athlete experience," Badgers AD Chris McIntosh said Wednesday at a meeting of the Athletic Board. Pete Miller, a former Athletic Board chair and faculty athletic representative who's a professor in the School of Education, was Mnookin's choice to lead the review, according to Badger Extra’s Todd Milewski, who adds: “The action came after five former Badgers women's basketball players filed a lawsuit against the university, former coach Marisa Moseley and former athletics administrator Justin Doherty in August. They said in the lawsuit — which added a sixth plaintiff in September — that Moseley subjected them to psychological abuse while she was their coach, and the school failed to protect them.” McIntosh told the Athletic Board that "our initial response to the court is due on or before December 8, and we are actively defending against those allegations, many of which lack full context or are simply false. If the litigation progresses in a manner that requires us to present the full factual record to the court, we will be ready and look forward to providing that information.” (link)

North Carolina Football GM Michael Lombardi tops USA Today’s initial survey of the highest Power 4 Football GM/Front Office Salaries with total pay of $1.51M. Ohio State GM/Player Personnel Mark Pantoni and Oregon Chief of Staff Marshall Malchow tie for second at $900K, Alabama Football GM Courtney Morgan rates fourth at $825K and LSU Senior Assoc. Overall, there are 13 different individuals earning at least $500K. Full database. (link)

USA Today’s Mark Giannotto, Steve Berkowitz and John Heasly explore some of the more elaborate front-office structures in college football as many schools race to bring in personnel from the NFL and business world to face the new NIL era. For example, Washington doesn’t have anyone with the GM title on HC Jedd Fisch’s staff, but Matt Doherty serves as Senior Director of Player Personnel. Long-time sports agent Cameron Foster was hired by UW AD Pat Chun on a one-year, $150K contract as Senior Director of Contacts and Cap Management to serve as “lead negotiator on revenue-share agreements.” The 33rd Team, led by former New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum, was also brought in as an outside consultant and paid more than $155K with Fisch remarking: “We wanted to bring in somebody that had no real motives, nobody really connected to our program substantially, but also somebody that can help guide (Doherty) and myself in making some critical financial decisions as we're now budgeting close to $15M or more to take care of players.” At Indiana the set-up is far more simplistic with Curt Cignetti serving as both the GM and HC. Cignetti: “I'm a control freak. I'm organized, I'm good with numbers. My name is on this. I spent a lot of years getting to this point, I'm the best one to do it.” Much more. (link)

Meanwhile, Stanford Football GM Andrew Luck is “paving a new road with supreme power over football,” writes USA Today’s Matt Hayes, who notes Luck “has a mandate from Stanford president Jonathan Levin to do what must be done at all levels of the program. From player procurement, to personnel (hiring/firing coaches), to fundraising and all the way down to the nitty-gritty of working with campus partners so that everyone on The Farm is aligned and on the same page.” Luck: “College football started changing and Stanford wasn’t accepting it. We’re not only going to accept it, we’re going to change the whole organizational structure.” It was Luck who made the call to fire HC Troy Taylor and bring on Frank Reich as Interim HC with Hayes observing: “No other general manager in college football has that power. [...] Luck believes there’s a group of elite high school players (and portal players) who still want the academic experience and the ability to earn off their name, image and likeness. It’s his job as general manager to find those players and convince them Stanford is the best move for their futures.” More. (link)

Furman is ready to unveil its newly renovated Timmons Arena after a $40M update and SBJ’s Bret McCormick explains: “The changes start at the curb, where the arena’s facade and front lobby were redone and received the addition of some glaring white Paladin eyes that illuminate at night, courtesy of Dimensional Innovations. DI also handled environmental graphics design and built a digital, interactive Furman athletics hall of fame viewable on a 30-foot video board in the arena’s lobby. Timmons Arena previously had just two sides of seating but now has a proper retractable seating bowl – Furman men’s and women’s basketball teams still practice there; maybe that project is next -- and a 360-degree traversable concourse. The venue’s back-of-house was reorganized for more efficient flow and audio and sound systems were overhauled, with new ribbon boards added. … The arena’s premium seating menu -- almost nonexistent previously – was boosted with eight private suites (144 seats on the suite level now), two party suites (24 people in each), a courtside club (for 72 courtside seat holders), and an additional flexible hosting space (with capacity for 100 and available as an add-on to any ticket) all added in the renovation designed by BetschAssociates. The suites run $15K annually, and the party suite $30K. That gives the arena 144 seats on the suite level. The renovation has increased Furman’s ticket revenue 300%, roughly 40% of which stems directly from premium seats.” (link)

Orlando’s Appearance Review Board unanimously approved plans for the redesigned Camping World Stadium with the Orlando Sentinel’s Laura Kinsler noting a new lighting package is serving as the “exclamation point” to the $400M project. Preliminary plans for the lighting package call for a programmable system that can light the stadium structure and incorporate downlighting to illuminate the metallic skin, causing a “lampshade” effect. DLR Group Lead Architect Ryan Freeland: “We know there’s an ambition to bring colored light throughout the city … but we also want to create an opportunity to illuminate the underside of the bowl, so there’s kind of a dynamic to the lighting sequence, and whether it’s the underside of the bowl, whether it’s the outer skin, and how that can start to create kind of this adaptive or programmable facade. So, depending on the event, … it can really kind of, again, carry that spirit of the event that it’s hosting.” Other components of the modernization project to the current home of the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl and Pop Tarts Bowl include new premium suites and amenities, updated building systems, code and fire safety updates to current standards and a retractable stage pocket in a section of the south seating bowl to attract more and larger music events. When completed, the redesigned stadium will seat 65K, while construction is expected to start early next year with a projected completion date of August 2027. More. (link)

The SEC highlights having “more athletes on NBA opening night rosters than every other conference” with a total of 103 to open the 2025-26 season. The ACC ranks second with 85, followed by the Big Ten (80), Big 12 (63) and Big East (38). The DII (link) and DIII (link) Management Councils have approved legislation to permit student-athletes and athletics department staff members to bet on professional sports, paving the way for the new rule to take effect on November 1 for all three divisions. Slippery Rock (DII) AD/Council Chair Roberta Page: "Our action reflects alignment across divisions while maintaining the principles that guide college sports. This change recognizes the realities of today's sports environment without compromising our commitment to protecting the integrity of college competition or the well-being of student-athletes." Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark joins CBS’ Matt Norlander from Big 12 Media Days and says he’s “very bullish on the CSC. It’s a bit of a startup. He’s building out infrastructure. We do need the participation agreement to be signed so they know the rules and the penalties that go with it. The clearinghouse is working. Over 9,000 deals have been cleared, valued at about $63M. About 450 deals were not cleared. Anything that smells of pay-for-play is being scrutinized at the highest levels – and it should.” Yormark reiterates his support for a 5+11 College Football Playoff format, and he expects the next two CFPs to remain at 12 teams. “We need to make a decision on ‘26–27 by December 1. I don’t see us making any changes between now and then. Any discussion that we do have would probably affect the ‘27–28 football season.” In discussing hoops specifically, Yormark asserts: “At the heart of this conference, it’s basketball. They’re all investing at the highest levels and they understand that there’s a direct correlation between investment and performance. If you think about the top high school players in the country last year, we have eight of the top 20. … We’re the number one men’s basketball conference in America. And in fact, I always tell people that'll listen that we're the second-best league in the country behind the NBA. … We’re the most distributed men’s basketball conference in America right now.” Full Q&A. “UNLV may have found a niche as the best place for good coaches on the rebound to resurrect their careers, win big and leave every few years,” according to Yahoo’s Dan Wolken, who adds: “For a program in the Group of 5, it wouldn’t be the worst fate. And [Rebels AD Erick] Harper said he’s seen the dividends, particularly as complex as head coaching jobs are these days, of hiring people with experience.” Harper: “With high-profile coaches, yeah it’s stressful [to hear speculation]. But you have to, again, you have to always expect the unexpected, and even though that's a cliché, and be prepared to know what direction you want to go in if something happens, if somebody decides to take another job, or if you have to make a decision. If something were to happen, I think it's still going to be important for us to find the right guy at the right time. Is it plug and play? You don't have to come in and ask for facilities, because we have those. What’s important for whoever the coach that we have is that they have the right tools to be able to do what they need to do based on who they are as a coach.” Rebels Football HC Dan Mullen’s “desert renewal” will likely earn him interest from Power 4 schools, but he tells Wolken: “You know, grass isn’t always green around the other side. I like this. I like the team. I like the program. We’re a ‘have’ of college football. I mean, just walk around [this facility]. I have great administrative support. I don’t need to chase, you know? I want to enjoy this, and with what we have, I’m able to." (link)

More from Tennessee AD Danny White in yesterday’s press conference to discuss Baseball HC Tony Vitello’s departure for the San Francisco Giants as the Vols have engaged Parker Executive Search to assist with finding Vitello’s successor. “They are already working on a plan on the logistics. I use them to help set up interviews. They don’t pick who we interview. I do that. I’ve been assessing, I’m always assessing, the market for all of our sports. But I’ve been assessing knowing this was a possibility for a while.” White on parameters for the search: “I’m not putting myself in a box with anything right now. This is kind of unprecedented to have a coaching transition this time of year. So I don’t know how this plays out.” Lots more. (link)

Elevate has released its “New Models, New Leaders: The Future of College Athletics” white paper, which states that DI athletic departments have entered a “new era” after the House settlement and must rethink how they’re structured and staffed. The paper claims that “no area of global sport has evolved more rapidly in the past decade than Division I college athletics” due to post-House revenue sharing; private capital flowing into venues; sponsorship asset commercialization; and the compounding effects of realignment and the transfer portal, each of which is stressing legacy operating models. In response, Elevate submits three restructuring archetypes…
➤ A new entity tied to the school to manage privatized functions; a longstanding affiliated foundation/DSO; and an internal, rebranded business unit. Further, Elevate favors adding corporate-style roles, such as CFOs, COOs, CROs, GMs and NIL Directors, to professionalize operations. It closes by emphasizing mission alignment and culture fit as schools introduce new governance and leadership to handle revenue, risk, and regulation.
➤ The paper also offers a primer on revenue-sharing mechanics and the new College Sports Commission; how schools are building “firewalls,” athlete licensing agreements, and NIL oversight to maximize compensation and remain competitive; why private capital is targeting venue overhauls (naming rights, year-round programming, sponsorship inventory); and a practical menu of governance options with benefits/drawbacks.
➤ The talent section details how ADs are widening their benches with executives from pro leagues, consulting, and finance to accelerate decisions and close skill gaps.
➤ Finally, Elevate emphasizes that “the pageantry of game day traditions, the deep connection to local communities, and the sense of identity and belonging for alumni and students remain differentiators professional sports cannot replicate. These enduring elements are not in conflict with operating model changes; in fact, they are part of what makes the investment in new models worthwhile.”

VCU AD Ed McLaughlin attended a ceremonial signing for Richmond’s new Diamond District. While details still need to be worked out, and the overall operating agreements have not been signed, plans to move forward are underway, and McLaughlin is confident the project will finish around the agreed-upon time. “Right now, our guys don’t have their own clubhouse. So we have to take stuff back and forth to the Siegel Center, where our locker room is. Now we’ll have our own clubhouse and we’ll have our own coaches’ offices. We’ll have a home here.” (link)

The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel shares some college football viewership data, noting that through Week 8, there have been 27 games with 5M+ viewers. “Distribution of games by network: ABC: 18; CBS: 3; FOX: 2; ESPN: 2; NBC: 2. Distribution of teams by conference: SEC: 32; B1G: 12; ACC: 7; Notre Dame: 2; Big 12: 1 (TCU vs. North Carolina).” Also from Mandel: “Nielsen changed how it calculates ratings this year which is inflating some numbers, but CFB viewership exploded beginning in 2023: Games with 5M+ viewers through Week 8: 2019: 14; 2021: 13; 2022: 10; 2023: 20; 2024: 19; 2025: 27.” (link)

Morehead State has renamed its football stadium in honor of alumnus and former Super Bowl MVP Phil Simms. Eagles AD Kelly Wells: “Few people, if anyone, have brought as much recognition to Morehead State University as Phil Simms. Not every school can say they have a Super Bowl MVP in their alumni family, but MSU can. Since his time here, Phil has dedicated time and resources to continuing the support of the Blue and Gold. He hosts camps in the summertime, visits with our coaching staff and athletes, and made Morehead State a priority in his life." (link)

The NHL has partnered with Kalshi and Polymarket, becoming the first major U.S. sports league to license its trademarks to prediction markets, and the Wall Street Journal’s Alexander Osipovich notes: “So far, Kalshi has avoided using trademarked terms such as ‘NFL’ or ‘Super Bowl’ on its app and website. Instead, it uses terms such as ‘Pro football champion’ and refers to teams by their cities. The NFL and other leagues have long been vigilant about potential infringement of their intellectual property.” NHL President of Business Keith Wachtel asserts that “prediction markets are here to stay” but insists sportsbooks remain “important partners” of the NHL. American Gaming Commission President Bill Miller calls the deals “deeply concerning,” adding: “Contrary to the league’s claims, the future of these platforms is far from certain, evidenced by the legal proceedings in multiple states, the views of well over half of the nation’s attorneys general, and state regulators determining these platforms to be illegal.” (link)
