South Carolina AD Jeremiah Donati on the state of the Gamecocks football program under HC Shane Beamer: “I think in our jobs, especially these days when things are so fluid, the best thing I can do is be a resource to him, to give him my time and my ear. Sometimes it might be counsel or advice, but there are a lot of things that go into running a football program. [...] Just stay positive, keep doing what he’s doing. Shane’s a tremendous coach. Even our highest-paid employees need encouragement. This is a big job. We’re behind him 100 percent, and that’s just been my message to him. Keep fighting the good fight every day.’ He’s a tremendous leader of young men. He’s got a great message, great energy. And we need that.” (link)

More from USF AD Rob Higgins on the Higher Ed Athletics podcast. On engaging students: “If student government brings 11K students to our football game and spreads the word across campus, I will ride a mechanical bull, I will eat a mechanical bull, I will run through a wall – whatever it takes to create the best atmosphere and environment for our student-athletes.” Higgins also shares some advice for aspiring leaders: “For me, the advice I would share with anybody is to speak from the heart and speak fearless. You get hired for a reason; it’s because you’re uniquely you – you’re one of one. The way to capture that is not by giving some standard, traditional, boilerplate speech that everybody has heard a hundred times from a podium.” (link)

Attorneys for Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia say they are now pushing to make their lawsuit against the NCAA a class action claim. From Front Office Sports: “The new plaintiffs include football players from multiple schools, including Vanderbilt’s Tre Richardson, Louisiana Tech’s Andrew Burnette, Virginia Tech’s James Djonkam, and Oklahoma State’s Iman Oates. With the imminent amended complaint, Pavia and his attorneys hope to set a completely new precedent nationwide and permanently change the rule that currently requires JUCO seasons to count against a player’s four years of NCAA eligibility.” (link)

With 11 jobs already open on the 2025 calendar, ESPN’s Pete Thamel ponders just how crazy the latest college football coaching cycle will eventually get with industry source remarking: “There's not enough good coaches to fill all of these spots. It's never a good year to be in the market, but especially not this year.” As for a perfect storm of market forces, Thamel writes: “Everything changed. So, it makes sense that the coaching cycle would, too. … If you consider the entire player procurement and payment model being overhauled, it makes sense that there's constant turnover on the landscape. And with bigger investments by schools come more urgency for results. And acquisition mistakes are magnified because they come with an actual price tag. [...] Combine that with bosses stressed over money and boosters having more sway because they are footing the NIL bills, and the coaching market is haywire.” An industry veteran comments: “I think in the last three or four years, because of NIL, I just think it's changed so much. If you're going to lead a bunch of 18-to-23-year-olds, the relationship part is so different now that money is involved. Coaching and getting the most out of kids is so different because of the financial implications.” More. (link)

Ohio State’s myriad of FOX Big Noon Kickoff games over the past eight seasons have created inherent challenges relating to the Buckeyes’ recruiting efforts. Asked on The Ryan Day Show about the opportunity home games present from a recruiting standpoint, OSU Football GM Mark Pantoni remarked: “They do when FOX doesn’t handcuff us with these noon games, as we have another one next week.” Pantoni went on to say that next weekend’s game against Penn State includes a list of visitors with plenty of Ohio prospects, but also recruits from Florida, Texas and California, some of whom are taking red-eye flights after their own Friday night football games. Pantoni noted that the program has run into issues with prospects not arriving in Columbus [until] mere minutes before kickoff due to the early start times. Pantoni: “Not landing until 11:30 (a.m.), 11:45, calling us and saying, ‘Hey traffic is really bad, what can I do?’ So you deal with a lot of crisis management on gameday right before kickoff trying to make sure it’s as efficient and smooth as possible.” (link)

Former Florida State/Texas A&M Football HC Jimbo Fisher wants to coach again, and in what could be a record year for coaching changes, the path might just exist for his return. Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger ponders: “Will it matter? Is Fisher’s past success enough to overcome any reservations from decision-makers that he’s still got it?” Longtime NFL Executive Mike Tannenbaum: “He’s getting ready to get back in. He’s not just sitting there, ‘I have all the answers! I’m Jimbo Fisher!’ No. He’s working his ass off to be ready and prepared.” Dellenger continues: “These days … he’s watching film — both for his gig as an analyst on ACC Network and for his future. He’s studying the game’s ever-evolving trends, organizing a future staff, creating a recruiting and evaluation plan. [...] It only took a few games into his first season off last fall for him to miss it enough to ping agent Jimmy Sexton: I want back in. Last December, he spoke to school administrators at West Virginia before they decided to hire Rich Rodriguez.” Fisher: “When you’re away from something, it makes you reflect. I’m back to watching film and have those feelings. I miss the players and those relationships. I miss practice. I miss the grind. I live to coach. I love to do what I did.” More. (link)

Former Tennessee Football HC Jeremy Pruitt is seeking a preliminary injunction from an Alabama judge that if granted would prevent the NCAA from enforcing its "show cause" order against him. Due to infractions committed as the Vols coach, Pruitt received from the NCAA a six-year show cause and a one-year suspension for any school hiring Pruitt. Pruitt's attorneys wrote in the October 17 court motion that Pruitt has been "approached about coaching opportunities at multiple colleges and universities, at least two of which are in the State of Alabama, only to be ultimately turned down as a result of the NCAA's actions," and further revealed Jacksonville State has been attempting to hire Pruitt as an analyst. LSU will increase football season ticket prices for 2026 by as much as $125. The higher price points will provide an estimated $4.5M in additional revenue. In a statement, LSU wrote: “LSU has carefully adjusted prices based on demand rather than applying an across-the-board increase ensuring they better align with the market. … Price changes focus on areas with high renewal rates and high secondary market values.” (link)

UConn Women’s Basketball HC Geno Auriemma and St. John’s Women’s Basketball HC Joe Tartamella would like to bring women’s hoops back to Madison Square Garden. Auriemma: “We used to do that, you know. We played St. John’s here. And I would hope that we could do it again.” Per the New York Post’s Madeline Kenney, “St. John’s March 1 game against UConn has its time and location listed as ‘to be determined,’ but it’s unclear whether that game could be moved to Manhattan. [...] Auriemma and Tartamella have discussed ‘a lot’ of avenues to bring women’s basketball to MSG, including hosting a four-team event similar to the second annual Champions Classic, which is scheduled to take place at Barclays Center in December. Auriemma and Tartamella also said there could be an opportunity to host another men’s and women’s doubleheader at MSG.” (link)

In the latest NCAA College Football Officiating Media Video, National Coordinator of Football Officials & Secretary-Rules editor Steve Shaw provides an update on plays-per-game and scoring across college football this season, remarking: “We’re averaging 176 plays-per-game this year. That’s up about half a play-per-game over last year, but it’s down about 4.5 plays-per-game since 2022 when we instituted the new first down timing rule. Our scoring average is 57.3 points-per-game, and that’s been very consistent over the last couple of years. It’s down only one point since 2022. So, we’re going to keep a close eye on our plays-per-game as exposures for the student-athlete are a very important part of health and safety.” More. (link)

More and more companies are presenting jobs with “best and final” pay offers right away, according to Korn Ferry, which notes the “trend seems to have started in the tech sector, which instituted non-negotiable offers in many areas while still paying massive compensation to a handful of AI stars. But the practice has now spread to other sectors, with hiring managers strongly implying—or saying outright—that there’s no wiggle room on pay. The goal, experts say, is to end a negotiation before it starts, at a time when the job market leaves candidates with few options.” Korn Ferry Global HR Business Partner Dennis Deans posits that while firms may save money, taking a hardline stance on pay at the start may also alienate the new hire – leaving them less motivated from day one. “To say this at the outset takes away from the perceived value of the individual. I worry about the candidate's experience if the negotiation is eliminated.” Korn Ferry Organizational Strategy Practice Senior Client Partner Kim Waller adds: “If I hear ‘My way or the highway,’ I might be looking at something else.” (link)

Oklahoma State officially approves a new four-year contract for AD Chad Weiberg running through Dec. 31, 2029. Per the deal, Weiberg’s salary will reportedly remain at $750K per year, plus incentives “tied to meeting overall Athletic Department financial goals coupled with athletic team performance” as determined by OSU president Jim Hess. Hess: “Chad is providing strong, steady leadership during one of the most transformative periods in college athletics history. He has the ability to navigate complex challenges and keep our student-athletes and programs at the forefront.” (link, link)

OneTeam Partners will acquire The Brandr Group per SBJ’s Ben Portnoy, who adds: “OneTeam Partners, which handles group licensing for the NFLPA, MLBPA and in the college space, among other efforts, includes EA Sports and Fanatics among its licensees. In acquiring TBG, the company’s reach will add a dozen new licensees such as Panini America, Homage and Upper Deck. […] The merger between OneTeam and TBG will now see the former’s group licensing program grow to an estimated 30K athletes. TBG also worked directly with more than 100 schools, including UConn, Florida, Purdue and Michigan, that will be folded into the OneTeam portfolio.” Exact deal terms were not disclosed. (link)

The NCAA has released a statement on eligibility in the wake of Michigan State Men’s Basketball HC Tom Izzo’s recent comments on G League players coming to college, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel. From the statement: “More schools are recruiting and enrolling individuals who have competed professionally – including many with experience in international and domestic leagues who may find college sports more appealing given the financial benefits now available. NCAA rules do allow players who competed professionally prior to collegiate enrollment to retain eligibility for college sports, though in some cases, players may lose seasons of eligibility due to delayed enrollment. Each player’s situation is unique and these issues arise at a time when NCAA eligibility rules are facing repeated lawsuits with judges enjoining some of these rules. In making its eligibility decisions, the NCAA endeavors to treat prospective student-athletes, whether domestic or international, as consistently as possible given the broad range of backgrounds that can be presented. These cases are likely to continue, and this uncertainty underscores the importance of collaboration with Congress to resolve conflicting judicial decisions that serve to deprive high school athletes of the ability to compete and create unfair environments for current college athletes.” (link)

With the Dec. 1 deadline for deciding on 2026 College Football Playoff expansion quickly approaching, Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger notes “the four power conference commissioners and their league officials appear no closer to a resolution. [...] There’s something else, too: The group of power conference athletic directors that Big Ten administrators are working to create hasn’t yet been assembled (and, perhaps, it won’t be?). It’s just another sign that the 2026 postseason will remain unchanged: a 12-team field with automatic qualifiers for the five highest-ranked conference champions plus seven at-large teams. [...] Remaining status quo appeases few of those around the sport who are itching for expansion at a time when talent is more evenly distributed than ever. Absent from college football’s 100-plus-year history, parity seems to be creeping into the sport with changes to player movement and compensation. That means more losses for everyone, fewer dominant teams and much tighter games.” According to Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua, there’s a “balance” that must be struck to “protect the integrity and importance” of the regular season. Bevacqua: “There’s no sport where the regular season games are more important than college football.” More. (link)

Virginia Deputy AD/Chief Strategy Officer/GM Tyler Jones was this week’s guest on the NACMA Timeout Podcast hosted by NACMA President Zach Dayton in partnership with College.town’s new CRO.ticker. Jones discusses how the rev-share era requires revenue leaders to apply commercial acumen directly to personnel strategy and details his split responsibilities – the "Day Job" (external revenue units) and the "Night Job" (roster management and agent negotiations) – as a modern structure that's been working at Virginia to great success. Big picture, Jones espouses relationship-driven leadership, data-informed decision-making, breaking down silos, pragmatic NIL operations (start with an internal audit), and a coach-management philosophy rooted in trust, empathy, and humility. Jones on what has surprised him as GM: “I think the one thing that caught me a little bit off guard was just the lack of knowledge about the industry. It’s interesting because I work with 17- to 18-year-old prospects — high school prospects and their families — and they’re probably not as versed in college athletics, certainly the changing landscape of college athletics. Then you’re working with guys on our team who are married with children. The student-athlete is just different now — they’re 23, 24 years old, married, adults. And then you layer in these agents and agencies that have no clue about college athletics. They have no understanding of school and the social aspect of being a college student, and that we have 27 sports at Virginia, not just one football or basketball program. I didn’t really anticipate just the lack of understanding of the collegiate space with this vast range of new key stakeholders that I’m engaging with daily.” (link)

Virginia highlights the reception of a multi-million dollar commitment from “a friend of the program” to football, marking the the fourth transformational gift the program has received in the last 10 months. Over that time frame, philanthropic investment directed for competitive operational support for football has more than doubled what had been secured across the previous eight seasons combined. (link)

Heading into Week 9 of the 2025 college football season, the ACC is averaging 2.8M viewers over its 34 Nielsen-rated games across ESPN networks and The CW, up 98% from the same point last season, per SBJ’s Austin Karp, who notes the league rates behind only the SEC (4.5M viewers on ESPN networks) and ahead of both the Big Ten (1.9M across FOX, FS1, NBC, CBS and Big Ten Network) and Big 12 (1.5M across ESPN networks, FOX, FS1 and TNT/truTV). Overall, the ACC has had at least one team in three of the top five most-watched college football games so far this season, eight of the top 30 and 12 of the top 50 with Miami (FL)’s matchup against Notre Dame on ABC leading the way for the league with 10.8M viewers. (link)
|
More ratings perspective from SBJ’s Austin Karp as the Big 12 and TNT Sports are both pleased with the onset of their new football relationship. Year-to-date, the seven league match-ups broadcast on TNT have “averaged 249K viewers, but three of them were non-conference matchups at the start of the season -- including two at 10:30pm ET. The intra-conference games are already rating 44% better than those non-conference contests.” Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark: “Turning those games from ESPN+ to a linear platform -- where we would receive a lot of promotion and shoulder programming in support of those games -- I thought was a great opportunity for our conference. I was familiar with TNT. I know what they put into their production, how they story-tell -- so I thought that was a real benefit and my ADs felt the same. [...] They’re putting a lot of money into production. They’re putting in additional cameras. They’re doing just an incredible job with the shoulder programming. … And we do follow social media just to see what the fan bases are thinking. And across the board, they’ve enjoyed it.” More. On the Master Coaches podcast this week, [former Nebraska Volleyball HC John] Cook reportedly said Nebraska was working on arranging a game at Wrigley Field in Chicago. While she doesn’t want these types of matches providing distractions, current Huskers HC Dani Busboom Kelly is open to having the conversation: “Volleyball just continues to grow, and people want to put us on TV on major networks. Sometimes that might take thinking out of the box to get more eyes.” Busboom Kelly is also open to moving the occasional match from the Devaney Center to Pinnacle Bank Arena, remarking: “If we can double our fans, I don’t know why we wouldn’t do it. I know there are scheduling issues, which we’ll work through. I do think Devaney is more of a home-court advantage, but I don’t think it’s so significant of a home-court advantage to keep 8,000 people out from watching us play.” (link)

According to a decision released by the DI Committee on Infractions, former Eastern Michigan Men’s Basketball student-athletes Jalin Billingsley, Da'Sean Nelson and Jalen Terry refused to cooperate with an investigation into potential sports betting violations. That represents a Level I violation of NCAA rules that could trigger permanent ineligibility; however, the student-athletes have no collegiate eligibility remaining. As a result of the student-athletes' conduct, the enforcement staff was unable to determine whether sports betting violations occurred. Although the COI does not currently assess penalties for student-athletes who violated NCAA rules, their participation is not without consequence as those found to have violated NCAA rules are ineligible and can only be reinstated with the assistance of an NCAA school. From the decision: “When individuals choose not to cooperate — particularly when cases involve potential integrity issues — those choices can and will be met with serious consequences including prohibitions on athletically related activities, the loss of eligibility and/or being publicly named in an infractions decision.” (link)

Boston College has inked a deal with memorabilia consultancy, clict, to unveil Eagle Heritage Authentics to assist the athletics department in building and launching its own line of authenticated relic products available directly to fans. The program will roll out in three phases: Hero Relics – limited-edition collectibles sourced from the university’s most historical athletic moments; Legacy Premium Collectibles – premium commemoratives celebrating the greats who defined BC sports; and Fan Editions – accessible, authenticated collectibles featuring current student-athletes and teams. Current student-athletes will directly benefit through NIL revenue participation, providing a new pathway for student-athletes to share in the value of their school’s collectibles ecosystem. (link)

Goldman Sachs is reportedly “nearing a deal to buy a majority stake” in Excel Sports Management at an almost $1B valuation, according to the Financial Times, who note a deal “could be announced as soon as next week.” Goldman is “buying the Excel stake from entertainment-focused private equity group Shamrock Capital and its management team.” Excel’s potential majority sale “reflects a boom in valuations for talent agencies as many of Hollywood and the sports industry’s most powerful representation firms take in outside capital and transform from small partnerships into broader corporate empires.” (link)
