CCIW Assoc. Executive Director Bryan Moore sits down with Voices in the Stands to dive into the league’s decision to partner with Hudl to launch the CCIW Network. Moore states when the league decided to begin the process of putting all media rights in one location, the membership was firm in their stance to remain free and not go behind the paywall. There was also an added benefit of all CCIW members already working with Hudl. Moore: “Division III, we all know what it is. It is the purest form of college athletics. For us, coming to our parents, coming to our dedicated alumni and saying, ‘You're going to have to pay to watch this weekend,’ is just not a message that we want to send. Again, I'm grateful that we're unified on that front. What it looks like in the future, I'm not sure. Obviously Hudl’s been an amazing partner and Hudl has done everything that we've asked them to do and a couple years down the road, I don't know what it looks like for Hudl. … I don't see any change of heart from the CCIW anytime soon when it comes to our philosophy on making our content available.” In year one, Moore notes that the league did not impose a bunch of branding standards, adding: “I do think in the long term we'd like to get to that point. […] We're not there yet, but getting everything in one central location is step one. I think it was easy for those athletics communication staffs to buy in because it was going to be a gradual buildup and we basically said, ‘Keep doing what you're doing; just make sure you send it to our network and we'll go from there.’” (link)

U.S. Representatives Brett Guthrie (R-KY), John Joyce (R-PA) and Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) have penned a letter asking NCAA President Charlie Baker for more information on the Association’s plans to allow student-athletes to bet on professional sports. According to ESPN’s Dan Murphy, the trio’s missive stated “they were examining the NCAA's proposed policy change and sent a list of nine questions they want answered within two weeks,” while also noting their “concerns increased this week in light of recent federal indictments over illegal sports betting and gambling rings involving NBA players and coaches as well as the NCAA's recent investigations into college athletes betting on their own games.” Friday’s letter inquired as to what guardrails Baker and the NCAA were putting in place to try to avoid illegal sports betting. They also asked for more information about studies the NCAA has done about the impact of betting on student-athletes and details about any “fraudulent, illegal and alleged betting practices in connection with NCAA players,” among other questions. ➤ Netflix has retained Moelis & Co. to evaluate a prospective bid for Warner Bros Discovery’s studio and streaming business, according to Reuters’ Dawn Kopecki, Dawn Chmielewski and Amy-Jo Crowley, who note “owning Warner Bros' studio business would give Netflix control over some of Hollywood's most successful stories and characters, including the Harry Potter and DC Comics franchises.” Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos told investors last week that while the company is traditionally ‘more builders than buyers,’ it does evaluate acquisitions based on criteria such as the size of the opportunity and whether it would strengthen the company's entertainment offerings.” Sarandos: “We've been very clear in the past that we have no interest in owning legacy media networks. There is no change there.” Warner Bros Discovery and Moelis declined to comment on Reuters’ story, while Netflix could not be reached for comment. (link)

➤ As part of the college’s $275M Faithfully Forward campaign, Wheaton (IL) will launch a $23M facility expansion to upgrade locker rooms, weight room, athletic training spaces and more. Construction is set to begin in summer 2026. AD Mike Schauer: “This is a significant moment in the history of Wheaton Athletics. These improvements will allow Thunder Athletics to continue our long-standing tradition of excellence while opening recreational space for the rest of the campus. This project will also improve our ability to attract recruits while enhancing the overall experience of our enrolled student-athletes. Current international student visa issues might be just a precursor to greater turmoil ahead in international enrollments writes The Chronicle of Higher Education’s Karin Fischer, who notes some colleges have reported drops in new overseas enrollments of 10 to 15% while the number of foreign students arriving in the U.S. in August fell by 20%, the largest decline outside the COVID-19 pandemic. Fischer continues: “The number of international students in the United States has doubled over the past 20 years. At many institutions, students from abroad have helped offset declining numbers of high-school graduates. In the next few years, foreign students could be even more critical as a countervailing force, thanks to a looming demographic cliff and growing disillusionment among many Americans about the value of a college degree.[...] The university counts on their tuition, which can be double that of Arizona residents. Last year, foreign-student revenue underwrote about $360M, or 12%, of the operating budget. [...] In fact, ASU gets about the same amount in general-fund appropriations from the State of Arizona as it does from overseas tuition. [...] With taxpayer support lagging — funding per student in Arizona remains 40 percent below pre-recession levels — that revenue could become more important, not less, to public institutions like Arizona State.” More.
