Mammoth Sports Consulting Asst. VP Tim Selgo sits down with College.town’s Anthony Grassi at the 2025 NACDA Convention to share his perspectives on the challenges facing small college leaders today. Selgo notes the biggest challenges are similar to when he began as AD at Grand Valley State nearly 30 years ago, but the challenge now is decreased enrollment along with budget cuts as athletic departments have added student-athletes and sports to support the enrollment of the institution. Selgo’s advice for those leaders on delegation: “It's never easy when you have limited staffing and 20-some sports. I work with clients now that have 25 or more sports. You can't be there for all of it. So you've got to relinquish some of that and let some other people get some of that responsibility. Even if it's just one or two others on your staff to help relieve your load a little bit because that piece about external revenue generation is getting bigger. And as an athletic director, that's time-consuming; that's relationships, man. So that pulls you in that direction and you need somebody to handle the day-to-day issues. […] Leadership is problem-solving and decision-making. I mean, that's what it comes down to. I had a math background growing up, so maybe that's why I like to solve problems, but it's problem-solving and decision-making. I used to tell my staff, if we didn't have any problems, they wouldn't need us. So let's not complain about them. We got great jobs because we're here to help this institution solve these problems, so let's go solve them. Again, some of that is experience. You just have to give yourself and your staff the opportunity to get those experiences that you were fortunate enough to have yourself.” More on BOSCA. (link)

The Santa Fe New Mexican’s Will Webber and James Barron chatted about New Mexico Highlands’ $85.5M facility master plan. Webber, who sat down with President Neil Woolf, VP of Advancement Paul Grindstaff and AD Scott Noble, credits the leadership for putting together a real lobbying effort, something NMHU has never had before, and the detailed plans in the form of an 87-page notebook. As for what Webber believes the outcome will be: “I think what they're actually going to get is somewhere close to about 25% of it, which is enough to redo football and do some stuff with baseball and softball. But hey, you know what? It was an ambitious plan. […] They do have a plan, but where they go from point A, where they are right now, to point X, which is where the money is, that remains to be seen.” (link)

Lynn HCs share what the university’s investment in facilities as part of its 2025 strategic plan has meant for their programs, with $10M invested since 2018. Men’s and Women’s Tennis HC Mike Perez: “We launched the tennis program when I began my career at Lynn in 1989. We knew we could win regardless of our facilities, but to achieve some equity with other universities, Lynn made an investment in our facilities that really bolstered our program. It reinforced the university's commitment to its student-athletes. […] Facilities don't win you matches or games, but this is a hyper-competitive environment. When prospective students, transfer students or other universities come to Lynn, they see how we present ourselves through these facilities. These enhancements have given us opportunities to recruit more quality student-athletes and achieve record-breaking success.” With new Baseball and Softball facilities on the way, Baseball HC Rudy Garbalosa: “The new ballpark…will greatly enhance the experience of our student-athletes and elevate our competitive level in one of the best baseball conferences in the nation.” Softball HC Cassidy Pickett with similar sentiments: “Once we get the new field, it's really going to give us the push we need to strengthen our recruiting efforts and help us be one of the best teams in the conference.” (link)

➤ U.S. Representatives Brett Guthrie (R-KY), John Joyce (R-PA) and Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) have penned a letter asking NCAA President Charlie Baker for more information on the Association’s plans to allow student-athletes to bet on professional sports. According to ESPN’s Dan Murphy, the trio’s missive stated “they were examining the NCAA's proposed policy change and sent a list of nine questions they want answered within two weeks,” while also noting their “concerns increased this week in light of recent federal indictments over illegal sports betting and gambling rings involving NBA players and coaches as well as the NCAA's recent investigations into college athletes betting on their own games.” Friday’s letter inquired as to what guardrails Baker and the NCAA were putting in place to try to avoid illegal sports betting. They also asked for more information about studies the NCAA has done about the impact of betting on student-athletes and details about any “fraudulent, illegal and alleged betting practices in connection with NCAA players,” among other questions. ➤ Netflix has retained Moelis & Co. to evaluate a prospective bid for Warner Bros Discovery’s studio and streaming business, according to Reuters’ Dawn Kopecki, Dawn Chmielewski and Amy-Jo Crowley, who note “owning Warner Bros' studio business would give Netflix control over some of Hollywood's most successful stories and characters, including the Harry Potter and DC Comics franchises.” Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos told investors last week that while the company is traditionally ‘more builders than buyers,’ it does evaluate acquisitions based on criteria such as the size of the opportunity and whether it would strengthen the company's entertainment offerings.” Sarandos: “We've been very clear in the past that we have no interest in owning legacy media networks. There is no change there.” Warner Bros Discovery and Moelis declined to comment on Reuters’ story, while Netflix could not be reached for comment. (link)
