Denver will exit the Summit League and join the WCC, effective July 1, 2026, to become the league’s 10th full member in 2026-27 and 11th in 2027-28. Commissioner Stu Jackson: “Denver’s commitment to elevate men’s and women’s basketball to a level which matches its nationally recognized success in other sports, while maintaining a focus on student-athlete development and experiences, is among the foundational pillars to this expansion. Their multi-year basketball growth plan shows an intentional focus that meets our basketball-centric identity. The Conference also values the addition of another large metropolitan area and top media market which will broaden our reach and deliver greater opportunity for our membership.” (link)

The Settlement Implementation Committee is being trimmed to include just Power 4 representatives and being remodeled into an advisory group for the College Sports Commission, per SBJ’s Ben Portnoy, who notes that in the new iteration of the committee the Pac-12 and NCAA won't be involved, with sources reporting the “reason for slimming representation was to reflect the committee’s shift from implementing a settlement that included the Pac-12 and NCAA as co-defendants (House) to becoming a feedback arm for the College Sports Commission — which is functionally taking direction from the Power 4.” ADs on the committee include: Ross Bjork (Ohio State), Pat Chun (Washington), Mitch Barnhart (Kentucky), Trev Alberts (Texas A&M), Desiree Reed-Francois (Arizona), John Cunningham (Cincinnati), Graham Neff (Clemson) and Josh Heird (Louisville). Bjork: “Look, we all want rules. We all want consistency and application. We all want things to be published. We all want structure. Providing advice and counsel as practitioners [is important]. That happens now — the NCAA committees. This is not new in any way, shape or form. Practitioners have a seat in some of these structures.” More. (link)

LSU held a press conference Friday officially introducing Executive Deputy AD and Executive Director of External Relations Verge Ausberry as the Tigers’ Interim AD. Ausberry: “I want our fan base to know one thing. LSU is not broken. The LSU Athletic Department is not broken. I think we have the best Athletic Department in the country. …We have to do everything to make sure the student-athletes get what they need and the coaches get what they need. Our job is support. The next chapter is, we have to hire a football coach. We’re going to hire the best football coach there is. … We’re not going to let this program fail.” (link, link); Additional presser notes:
➤ LSU Board of Supervisors Chair Scott Ballard on an AD search timeline: “There is not a timeline set for [hiring an AD]. … The full concentration is to find a coach, find the best coach, period. That process has already started as Verge said with the team, the athletic department. It’s truly not something we’re even going to address until we get that done.”
➤ Per Ausberry, LSU has assembled a Football HC Search Committee expected to include Ballard, Board of Supervisors member John Carmouche, Bollinger Shipyards CEO Ben Bordelon, FMOL Health President/CEO E.J. Kuiper and another member that’s yet to be determined.
➤ WAFB-TV Sports Director Jacques Doucet observes: “The overriding message of the LSU athletic press conference Friday morning - interim AD Verge Ausberry will lead the search for the new LSU Football head coach and have the final say on the hire.” (link)
➤ On how the decision was made to part ways with AD Scott Woodward, Carmouche remarked: “The Governor [Jeff Landry] was not involved. The Governor is worried about the state of Louisiana. His concern had to do with the state contract.”
➤ On where the funding to pay Woodward’s buyout will come from, Ballard commented: “The revenue stream is generated from the athletic department. It’s self-generated funds and/or private donations. … It does not come from state dollars that are allocated towards other things like education.”

Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger provides an update to his reporting from last week about the on-going discussions over the selection of a 2026 College Football Playoff format, noting: “Despite pitches from Big Ten ADs of a 20+ team CFP, SEC ADs this week in meetings did not consider formats beyond 16 teams. [The] SEC/B1G must agree before a new format is adopted. Standoff means 12 teams for 2026 as written last week.” (link)

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports “Michigan State’s board approved today the initiation of ‘Spartan Ventures,’ following the lead of Clemson and others to form an independent company outside the athletic department with a focus on maximizing revenue. Spartan Ventures is a non-profit, tax-exempt corporation being built for the new era of college athletics. Essentially, Michigan State will be moving many of its key commercial operations – expected to include media rights, ticket sales, Spartan Athletics Foundation and NIL – to Spartan Ventures. Among the focuses will be revenue generation, NIL opportunities for athletes and fundraising.” (link)

Friday night college football viewership is surging, with Fox indicating its Friday games are up 15% YoY and are outdrawing most Saturday Fox windows outside Big Noon. Meanwhile, ESPN’s Friday games are also topping many of its Saturday telecasts, according to The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner, who notes that a review of 13 qualifying Friday games through Oct. 17 averaged 2.5M viewers, rising to 2.7M for Power 4 vs. Power 4 matchups, Those statistics outpace comparable Saturday late-afternoon and primetime slots. The momentum is prompting talk of more Friday inventory, including potential doubleheaders with a late “After Dark” game, as networks swap out fading scripted primetime for live sports, capitalize on stronger out-of-home measurement, and eye future media-rights windows with the ACC, Big 12, and Big Ten. Crakes Media’s Patrick Crakes: “I think you’ll see more of that. Because what are you replacing?” Wilner consequently posits that “if the Friday viewership numbers remain on their current trajectory — and if scripted entertainment continues to migrate to streaming platforms — the next round of media rights deals could very well include both more prime-time games and a new window entirely. New windows would mean more money for the power conferences. They also would require, ahem, more teams.” (link)

Odds & Ins…
➤ U.S. Representatives Brett Guthrie (R-KY), John Joyce (R-PA) and Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) have penned a letter asking NCAA President Charlie Baker for more information on the Association’s plans to allow student-athletes to bet on professional sports. According to ESPN’s Dan Murphy, the trio’s missive stated “they were examining the NCAA's proposed policy change and sent a list of nine questions they want answered within two weeks,” while also noting their “concerns increased this week in light of recent federal indictments over illegal sports betting and gambling rings involving NBA players and coaches as well as the NCAA's recent investigations into college athletes betting on their own games.” Friday’s letter inquired as to what guardrails Baker and the NCAA were putting in place to try to avoid illegal sports betting. They also asked for more information about studies the NCAA has done about the impact of betting on student-athletes and details about any “fraudulent, illegal and alleged betting practices in connection with NCAA players,” among other questions. (link)
➤ Eastern Kentucky men’s basketball student-athlete Amarr Knox is currently ineligible to play, according to ESPN’s David Purdum, who notes Knox transferred from Alabama State, which is reportedly a school of interest in NCAA’s ongoing gambling probe. Eastern Kentucky confirmed to ESPN that Knox is ineligible under NCAA rules but declined further comment. (link)
➤ Former Northern Arizona Women’s Soccer AHC Dustin Smith has been hit with a three-year show-cause order by the NCAA for impermissible betting of more than $420K on professional and college games over four-plus years at NAU and West Florida (DII). (link)

➤ Mississippi Valley State will discontinue Women’s Soccer and add Women’s Flag Football and Club Golf as part of a “long-term strategy to optimize resources, expand student opportunities, and position MVSU within growing areas of collegiate athletics.” AD Alecia Shields-Gadson: “This realignment reflects a strategic vision that allows us to reinvest in emerging sports and create more opportunities for students to compete and thrive. […] This realignment strengthens our program and helps us remain competitive within the SWAC and beyond, while maintaining our commitment to student success.” (link)

➤ The NCAA has approved Jacksonville State’s plan to hire former Tennessee Football HC Jeremy Pruitt as an analyst, according to Bama247’s Mike Rodak. Per the Association, the modified terms of Pruitt’s six-year show-cause order "do not apply to any other institution that should wish to employ Mr. Pruitt during the remainder of the show-cause period.” Rodak adds: “The NCAA said Pruitt's suspension would only apply to the remainder of this season and not 2026, but his show-cause order would remain in effect through its expiration in July 2029. JSU must ‘place specific restrictions in areas where the [Committee on Infractions] previously concluded violations occurred,’ and must ‘implement a robust monitoring program. … The NCAA further told Jacksonville State it must submit an annual report detailing Pruitt and the school's compliance with the agreement, and must detail to the NCAA what responsibilities Pruitt has on game days in 2026 after his suspension ends.” (link)

Legal Matters…
➤ Per Boise State professor Sam Ehrlich: “Looks like there will be a mid-December hearing on a soon-to-be-filed motion for a preliminary injunction in the Patterson class action lawsuit challenging the Redshirt and Four Seasons Rules. The motion will seek to enjoin enforcement of those rules across all of [Division I] football. Importantly, the court also granted the plaintiffs' motion for limited pre-motion discovery encompassing these requests for production and interrogatories (all of which implicates information I imagine the NCAA isn't too keen on producing).” (link)

Latest from the Bayou…
➤ LSU and AD Scott Woodward “have agreed to part ways effective immediately.” Executive Deputy AD Verge Ausberry will take over as Interim AD. (link)
➤ Woodward writes in a letter to fans: “It is with a heavy heart but also with my typical optimism, that today is my last day serving as your Director of Athletics. … Others can recap or opine on my tenure and on my decisions over the last six years as Director of Athletics, but I will not. Rather, I will focus on the absolute joy that LSU Athletics brings to our state’s residents and to the Baton Rouge community. I will cherish the incredible relationships I have built within the University community and beyond our campus borders. And I will fondly remember the national and SEC championships for the joy that they brought to our student-athletes, coaches, staff, campus community and our incredible fans.” (link)
➤ Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports LSU is “expected to comply with the obligations in Woodward’s contract, sources tell Yahoo Sports. According to Woodward’s contract, he is owed roughly $6.4M.” (link)
➤ Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry tells ESPN Baton Rouge’s Matt Moscona: “I really don't want to be involved in this [picking the next coach] as long as the state of Louisiana and taxpayers aren't involved.” However, “I'm going to be looking at that contract and I will be opining on it.” (link)
➤ Finally from Baton Rouge (by way of New Brunswick), Rutgers President William Tate tweeted out a cryptic photo from The Wire depicting characters Omar and Brother Mouzone. Tate, the former LSU president, doesn’t expand, but the dots, if you’ve seen the episode in question, are not hard to connect. (link)

At the direction of the NCAA Men's and Women's Basketball Committees, the national office will implement player availability reports for the 2026 DI Men's and Women's Basketball Championships. From the NCAA’s release: “Player availability reports during the tournaments can reduce the betting-related pressure, solicitations and harassment student-athletes receive connected to their playing status.” President Charlie Baker adds: "After months of thorough discussion and exploration, I applaud the Division I Men's and Women's Basketball Committees for taking such important action. Implementing player availability reporting is a major step to increasing student-athlete protections by alleviating pressures for the enhancement of their college experience." (link)

The “Pac-12 2.0” is targeting an eight-team league in 2026, and The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner says new Executive Associate Commissioner for Football Operations Merton Hanks is racing to finalize schedules, officiating, a title-game site and bowl tie-ins. The schedule, Wilner contends, is the hardest puzzle to solve, as a seven-game round robin would require teams to play five non-league games and an eight-game slate means each school will have a home-and-home pairing. The league has modeled roughly 120 schedule iterations and is prioritizing College Football Playoff positioning, with Hanks telling Wilner: “The team that wins the Pac-12 title should be in the running for CFP, and our job is to not mess that up.” Hanks, Wilner adds, has been “scouring the country to find specific teams and entire conferences capable of providing the inventory for Pac-12 teams to play a fifth non-conference game.” Hanks notes: “We have to be flexible. It’s not simple. We can’t just send everyone on the road.” Complicating matters is the SEC and ACC adding ninth conference games, and the “end result is a dwindling pool of potential opponents for Pac-12 teams needing a fifth non-conference game. The conference has discussed scheduling arrangements with other leagues at the sub-Power Four level, but many teams have their schedules set for 2026.” Big picture, Hanks says the league wants to think outside the box: “The great thing about being a challenger conference, a rebuilding conference, is that everyone else has to overcome legacy concerns. That’s not an issue for us.” (link)

Georgia Tech AD Ryan Alpert says the Yellow Jackets’ undefeated, top-10 start to the football season has turned every game into a “national showcase,” with a sellout night test at NC State next. On TV windows, he credits the ACC–ESPN plan – often slotting Tech at noon by design – and notes the ACC’s viewership sits at No. 2 behind the SEC. Tech’s matchup with Georgia to end the regular season could be one of the premier games of the year, and Alpert notes: “How great would that be for the city, for the community, for the state to go in there with two nationally-branded teams having great success? But it’s not just the Georgia game. I’m trying to look at how do we capitalize on the success for the next couple games this year, but into next season. As we look to what does that schedule look like, how are we marketing ourselves, how are we continuing again to make sure this isn’t just a one-year opportunity? How do we make and build sustained success at Georgia Tech and for the whole athletic department, but specifically the football program?” (link)

Nebraska AD Troy Dannen says he has been talking with Football HC Matt Rhule about a contract extension since the summer, adding: “And then the market is weird this year, right? There's so many positions that have opened midseason. So I would say the last couple of weeks, because of all of the jobs opening, it started moving faster and then culminated again this morning.” Dannen goes on to outline three rules: “Number one, take care of somebody. Compensate them for what you believe they're worth before you have to. So that's why you're proactive. Number two, when you have what you think is a great coach, you have two obligations. Number one is to compensate them at what is the market for your expectations for where the program should be. And then number two, put them in a position to succeed. The money's there any place, but not every place can you be in a position to succeed. His desire is the same as my desire. Let's compete for and ultimately win a national championship. Again, how do we make sure this place can be that while making sure he is compensated at the market of what the expectations for our competitive success should be?” Regarding the structure of the extension, Dannen explains that if NU goes to four consecutive College Football Playoffs, Rhule will be the highest paid coach in the country. “And you know what? If we go to the CFP four years in a row, he should be the highest paid coach in the country. So I would tell you that is Matt's confidence and willingness to bet on the program and how we're going to provide for him and our confidence in what he can do when we provide for him.” (link); The Athletic’s Mitch Sherman notes Rhule’s new deal will pay him a total of $79.5M in base salary, with a 90% buyout if he is let go without cause. Western Michigan is withholding transfer guard Justice Williams from basketball competition “pending the result of a recent NCAA investigation of events that precede his enrollment,” the school tells Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde and Michael Rosenberg, who add: “It is unclear whether Williams also is of interest in the federal probe of alleged game fixing, point shaving and performance manipulation in college basketball, or just the NCAA’s separate but concurrent inquiry. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania is believed to be in the latter stages of its investigation.” (link)

Alcohol sales at Wisconsin’s Camp Randall Stadium are down 19.2% over the first five home games of this season compared to the same stretch in 2024, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s John Steppe, who notes sales have totaled nearly $1.8M to this point, compared to $2.2M over last season’s initial five home contests. The total number of alcoholic beverages sold is similarly down 18.7% from 182,386 units last year to 148,323 in 2025. Steppe adds: “Wisconsin’s decrease in alcohol sales coincides with a decrease in fan turnout. UW’s official attendance number is down from 76,057 to 70,745 so far in 2025. The actual turnout is even lower, as tickets scanned data obtained for the first four home games showed an average of 51,980 fans per game.” More. (link)

Disney channels, including ESPN and ABC, were removed from YouTube TV after a failure to agree on a new distribution deal. The channels went dark in roughly 10M homes shortly before midnight, and The Wall Street Journal’s Joe Flint notes: “Disney and YouTube TV had held contentious negotiations leading up to the channels being removed. The deadline to reach a deal was 11:59 p.m. ET on Thursday. There are several issues dividing the two companies, but the primary fight is over the fees Disney is seeking from YouTube TV to carry its channels. … YouTube said in a statement that Disney’s actions are aimed at benefitting its own rival pay-TV distributors Hulu + Live TV and Fubo. Combined, those two services have roughly 6M subscribers.” A Disney spokesperson, meanwhile, argues that “with a $3T market cap, Google is using its market dominance to eliminate competition and undercut the industry-standard terms we’ve successfully negotiated with every other distributor.” (link)
